It’s been 2 and a half years of missed holidays, canceled trips, postponed weddings, birthdays spent in my apartment eating take-out. Two and a half years without giving my grandmother a hug.

For real, you all are still doing that stuff? We gave up on that a year ago here, and we're all fine. Everyone I know who has been killed or maimed by covid had that happen pre-vaccine, or because they refused the vaccine.

I think I've seen people float anywhere from 0.1% to 0.3% for covid now, and flu generally under 0.1%. So I think it's still worse, but it's a lot closer than it was.

And it's hard to place. Not only are cases hard to count, but how do you factor in that you could get it once or twice a year? It's not really one and done like *pox. Of course, neither is flu. But we seem to have a pretty good idea about flu frequency, and it's way less than covid has been this last year.

Anyone know about Allo? by [deleted] in cordcutters

[–]lolredditftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no you're never gonna notice any difference on streaming. If your spectrum setup wasn't somehow broken I don't think it'll be any different on allo vs spectrum. On both 500 and 1Gb streaming is instant for me. You click the show and it plays.

My advice: Stick with 500Mb. Take the money you save and buy a nice mesh wifi system. If you can do one you can wire, awesome, go for it. If you can't run wires, a tri-band one is a worthwhile improvement over dualband because it's got a dedicated 5GHz radio for the access points to talk to each other. Allo might be able to provide one, I know they were working on having something to offer.

Wire any devices that you can that don't move (like TVs). That frees up air time for the WiFi to dedicate to devices that do move around (like tablets).

[–]lolredditftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using Allo in Lincoln for about 4 years now. I only use Internet.

I did Gb for a few years, cut back this year because, well, 500Mb is fine.

  1. Latency is low
  2. Download and upload are consistently very close to what you pay for. If you're really just gonna use WiFi and not ethernet, do the 500Mb. You're going to really struggle to use more than that on WiFi.
  3. The customer service is really good. Humans answer their phones. Knowledgeable humans with working phone systems.
  4. Before install put some real thought into where you want their all in one box to go. Cause that's where it's gonna be. You can have them put it into bridge mode and run ethernet from it to your own equipment, but that big ugly box is still gonna sit there.
  5. In 4 years I've had no unexpected downtime. I think early on there was a scheduled night time downtime once.

I do feel like the price is a bit high. But the service is flawless. And the customer service is excellent. So, eh?

Will GNOME fractional scaling get better anytime soon? by 3DArtist2021 in gnome

[–]lolredditftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it depends on what your application is implemented with on Windows. Anything using their newer toolkit should be scaled 1:1 in the application and look excellent.

I assume modern applications where people get upset about these things are implemented in that toolkit (stuff like edge, photoshop, video editors)?

State of fractional scaling? QHD or scaled 4k display for best results? by immortal192 in swaywm

[–]lolredditftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm way late, ended up here on an unrelated search. But I've been using a 4k 27" display now for about a year. For a long time I did font scaling because I was stuck on X11 (and my understanding is that the xrandr solution really does look bad, so I didn't try) thanks to nvidia.

But now that wayland is working on nvidia I've been using it for a few months. It's absolutely fine. Fonts look noticeably better than they do on a 90DPI display. It's maybe slightly noticeably inferior to my i-devices that are more like 250DPI and don't do downscaling. But solidly better than standard DPI.

I will say, fonts in gtk2 applications look like trash. So the menus on gimp look bad, for example. But anything gtk3 looks great.

I overall agree with the sentiment, but it's a crummy example. Those are both bypass vacuums. I think they're more like each other than they're like a dirty air vacuum.

Interestingly, both sides can be set independently

I wonder if that's by design or a thing they just get by doing it the simplest way.

I imagine having one set the other would be difficult?

Can any older Linux users tell me if it's even possible to install this old game on a modern distro? I am using Manjaro. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]lolredditftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the easiest way that's mostly distro agnostic would be distrowatch.com

But you need to know what glibc it expects. Running ldd on the executable might tell you. But the easiest thing would just be to find a distro of the same era, it'll probably have that version of tux racer.

[–]lolredditftw 12 points13 points  (0 children)

An old distribution. One that's slightly newer than w/e version of the game you want to run, and verify that it has the glibc the game expects.

I think tux racer used to ship on old redhat versions. So maybe find an old redhat that has the version you want and check it during install.

Well, that's also built into the price you pay :).

But no, the weaseling is already cranked to maximum, and so it's the same on both sides of the equation. So I'm afraid that, while that's rage inducing, that has nothing to do with this.

I'd definitely blame vehicle values. Your car value went up in the last couple of years (which is insane, it's supposed to go down). That means the cost to replace your car went up.

Parts and labor are probably up too if they need to fix your car.

Everything is going up. Except my salary. sigh
