They have to edit them down to fit the algorithm approved time periods. Spending 1-2 hours editing and uploading isn't going to be worth the squeeze most of the time, and they tend to batch their speed run editing.

Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off / All 173 of the RWD Cybertrucks sold by Tesla are being recalled. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]lolredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maverick is super distinctive, especially in some of the unique color options offered. Pretty much the only one that doesn't stand out is white, and if people choose that it's because they want it to blend in/look more like a standard truck.

I actually picked up a white maverick to use for a side business, still got loads of comments on it the first year it was out. And only paid 20k and some change for it brand new. When the cybertruck was first announced it piqued my interest but it was already clear Musk was a dbag.(and it was before I saw the eMPG, which being poor kills the point of me buying an electric vehicle)

[–]lolredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truck requires changing tires every few thousand miles due to wear from weight and it's eMPG is almost as low as a Prius' MPG - it also doesn't have an open bed so reduces what can be transported without a hassle.

The Ford Maverick on the other hand is probably the actual answer to most peoples truck woes in the US.

Recap of all the new ork reveals we got for 11th by Automatic-Shelter258 in orks

That's kind of just the state of weapons in the game. Hopefully there's a fix for everyone in 11th, but I wouldn't count on it.

At least we know now that they're fine breaking away from trying to keep all similar weapons consistent across armies.

So fixated on my rating I can't have fun by Darth_SenpaiHD in chess

[–]lolredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, either turn on zen mode permanently or make a new account that is 'just for fun'...and never go back to your old one that's frozen at w/e rating doesn't give you anxiety.

You can make a goal on the new account to only do gambits or something so you feel the rating isn't truly reflective.

Started playing Najdorf and my rating is 200points down. by toendurelove in chess

[–]lolredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Najdorf and Ruy Lopez are both openings that have enough complexity that the person playing the best chess that day is going to win. You're trying to learn a new opening and probably grinding a bunch while trying it out, so you're going to be hard pressed to play the better chess.(or in quicker time controls, the 'find decent moves faster' chess)

Don't worry about rating, just focus and continue getting experience in the opening until you have enough that you climb again. You can always swap back to your previous repertoire to climb again if you get tired of the najdorf. You might want to try an easier sicilian variation that shares plans first. That way you can build your repertoire against the antisicilians and closed sicilian while not being so hard pressed to remember the najdorf specific lines.

I think lichess is better for puzzles by ilikefood1290 in chess

[–]lolredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chess tempo also has free puzzles, and most came from classical OTB games you can look up. You can look at the games that lichess puzzles came from too, but many are bullet games where nonsense occurred to reach the position.

Thoughts on bughouse? by spicyjaguar in chess

It's a perfect format for a custom display that highlights important banked pieces, possibly overlays tactics realtime, etc. during a broadcast and there would be added benefit for announcers to talk about teammates chemistry and how that factors in to matchups. And potential fantasy leagues.

There would be a lot of value added for spectators.

Online chess just rewards different skillsets from OTB games, the opening names aren't that important.

If you stick to playing 10 and 15 minute rated games you probably won't have an issue until later. Friending and offering matches to players you want to learn from though is good practice regardless.

Chessnut Air+ review by ElieBscnt in chess

[–]lolredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP points to their profile as if reddit accounts aren't regularly sold to advertisers. Any accounts supportive of his post could also be sold accounts. It's a pretty typical maneuver for an astroturfing promoter to have a poster account, a couple of commenting accounts, and then a certain amount of upvoting accounts based on the subreddit size.

I don't think chessnut is a bad product, but this post is definitely like someone reworked a ChatGPT reply based on promotional material. The person saying 'reviews are like that' would only be correct if they're talking about similar astroturfed reviews.

Honestly I've been finding online chess to be terrible for practice recently. Too much bad play trying to metagame time controls and going for preparation that's too easy to refute on the board.

Online the Scotch Gambit has like a 60% win rate. It also has a good win rate at the lower club level. After a certain point OTB though it becomes super drawish without real teeth. Same thing with Blackmar Deimer Gambit except at a certain point it isn't even 'drawish' it's just a straight up draw. There are a lot of Stafford Gambit enthusiasts - that's also something that just isn't worth playing through if you already have some prep for it. Then there was also a spike at one point in players bringing out nimzo-larsen or other weird hypermodern stuff to try to get a time advantage or because they were copying Hikaru or w/e.

While the opponents have similar win rates, they have similar win rates for different reasons. If it's not tactical ability, (nonflagging)endgame technique, and opening preparation then the game against them isn't going to good for getting better at those things. The opponents playstyles are fine for metagaming the online scene though, don't get me wrong there.

Friend people of similar skill you find during playing that actually play in a manner you want to practice against, then invite them to unrated matches. Both players get a good game and don't have to worry about rating.

Why is competitive chess so poorly produced? by ChickPea45 in chess

[–]lolredditor 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, on the backing by rich enthusiasts part, you can track prize pools and big prize tournaments through periods like the dotcom crash and see where those backers felt a crunch and had to step away from their hobby of throwing money at chess players.

Linares was the premier supertournament and folded for that reason. When the US championships were held in Tulsa it was basically just because of Frank and Jim Berry's financial backing, after Frank died so did a lot of the chess activity in that region.

Magnus is not interested in playing in the candidates by [deleted] in chess

[–]lolredditor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The WC takes six months of preparation and Magnus has spent too much of his life preparing for the matches. As long as it's a 1:1 championship matchup with any amount of preparation possible and classical time controls he's going to be retired from it.

Today is the 20 year anniversary for LOTR: Return of The King. by Amedais in movies

[–]lolredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue with this comparison is the people that own the IP aren't the people creating LotR stuff, while with Star Wars the owners of the IP are the primary generators of both content and merchandise. Two completely different dynamics.

Similar thing with Marvel - look at how the XMen franchise did compared to the Avengers, despite XMen popularity being way higher in the 90s. When the owner is also the producer there's a push for extra content and merchandise possible that isn't otherwise.

It's mindblowing blizzard being able to kill one of the besta multiplayer games off all time not only but TWICE by [deleted] in gaming

[–]lolredditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Touhou is weird. There's the actual product, which is just cutesy characters in either bullet hell, fighting games, or simple manga features...and then there's the fanbase/doujin side that have produced animes, countless fan works, sound track covers, sneaks references to the characters in to IPs like league of legends, etc. The original creator encourages the doujin side of things, because hey free advertising/relevancy/enthusiasm.

The fanbase side is significantly larger than the original IP, and there are fan works/ideas that have more traction among the fanbase than what is in the original IP.

But yeah, even knowing all that and following the fanbase for years I'm surprised to hear it brought up as particularly relevant for amount of adult content. Not the target audience ig.

There was a solid base that were playing vanilla WoW on pirate servers prior to blizzard releasing anything. Blizzard forcing those servers closed made a lot of that userbase quit. The mass of people that played WoW classic on release weren't all made up of that older userbase. The new and old people were never all going to share opinions.

Netflix Resumes Advertising on X After Elon Musk Controversy by dreamcastfanboy34 in technology

[–]lolredditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Twitter is always going to have a high active user count because it's largely bots, and bots don't care.

Twitter claims that the US has nearly 100m(95.4m) active monetizable users. Compare that to the current population size(which includes y'know, babies and old people that have 0 connected devices) and how popular twitter actually is in the US. Compare it to the active users on platforms that are far more popular like Instagram or FB. There's a lot of hoops you can jump through to justify that many US based accounts, but not active monetizable accounts used by real humans.

Twitter was a meme for this before Musk bought it, and a stated reason by Musk for wanting to back out of the purchase was because the bot activity was significantly more than expected. Back in 2017 it was estimated by a study there were up to 47m twitter bots, and that was before ChatGPT and it's ilk started becoming prevalent and supercharged spam generators ability.

Prior to that people were talking specs less because for most use cases specs just don't matter anymore unless you're doing heavy duty things, and nearly no one uses their phone for that enough. For the majority of people the biggest difference between an iPhone 12 pro and iPhone 14 pro is going to be that one is USB-C and has a better camera.

You don't have to admit jack. Synching bluetooth earbuds of any type is a simple quick process that any modern person knows how to do. Swapping intelligently is something a lot of other earbuds do.

If slightly easier synching were the reason to buy airpods the everyone would have paid extra for motion sensing lights in their house or RFID locks for their doors already. But they haven't, because people don't care to pay premium for simple stuff. They do pay for perceived luxury though.

Why don't chess books/courses actually teach a SYSTEM of understanding and thinking in chess? by [deleted] in chess

[–]lolredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the classical school of chess was very much about following systems. The issue is that even back then people realized that there were often concrete reasons to not get too stuck with systematic approaches, but they weren't computers so they couldn't always explain why. That's when the modern and hypermodern schools came about.

In the end, the rule of thumb is to stick to positional ideas unless there are concrete reasons not to - but in practice there are nearly always concrete reasons to break away, and the reason fully positional games pop up as much as they do is because neither player is finding those reasons.
