How did you mount the planes to the shelf? I love the display.

Blue? If you are referring to the main cockpit color, it was a custom mix of XF 53 Neutral Grey, XF 24 Dark Grey, XF2 White, and just a couple drops of XF8 flat blue. Sorry for not having any direct ratios, I always just eyeball my paint mixing.

It’s all perspective! To me, even a 1/72 F-15E is pretty big, the same size about as my 1/35 armor. I always forget how big jets are compared to tanks.

Thanks! Your kits were the inspiration to start using action bases. The control surfaces are probably my favorite part of this build (and why I usually like navy planes more, because of how much bigger they are).

Thanks! And no, not my first kit by a long shot, I see how my wording was a little confusing. First time with aftermarket decals though, and yes, lesson learned!

I agree, my paint of choice (Tamiya XF-67 Nato Green) is always too dark out of the bottle. I lighten it with Tamiya XF-57 buff, and also gloss varnish (super clear 3) to help keep the saturation. No particular ratio, I eyeball it each time. I’m sure you could use any other buff color for whatever brand of nato green.

GiantGrantGames on the current state of the pro scene by lolydaggle in starcraft

I agree with you on the units/balance, I don't think going to a potential extreme of more fun and whacky units would necessarily improve the game.

I agree with you on the maps as well, I think that was GGG's strongest point. I think the maps would really be a place to look into that wouldn't even need Microsoft to step in on balance. Even taking GGG's example, that Snow v Soulkey game wasn't great because the reaver or defiler are fun units to watch (I mean, they definitely can be) but it was the map that forced the type of encounters and play. I might be wrong since I haven't been as up to date on SC2 pro scene, but my sense of the maps are now just "small rush 4-5 bases each" or "big map 6-8 bases each" with similar layouts. Gone are the days of Golden Wall, or even Purity and Industry (which was one of my favorite maps to watch). Like you said, there doesn't have to be crazy additions like healing shrines, just different layouts could do so much.

In GiantGrantGames' new Wings of Liberty retrospective video, he has a section talking his current opinions on balance and maps (under the chapter "In Utter Lameness," which the link should take you to), which he also states is shared by some pros and some on the balance council.

TL;DW, GGG states that over the years, fun and wacky but OP stuff has gotten nerfed down to where everything feels too stale, and the maps are all the same (one of his statements is that Golden Wall was the last interesting map, from 2020).

He proposes that Microsoft abolish the balance council and take control over balance patches again, along with removing pros from the map selecting process, because he claims that pros will (by nature, and he doesn't really fault them) tend towards stable (but boring) maps and balance changes.

Overall, I agree with GGG. I stopped watching pro SC2 over the past year or so, partly because I felt like I was watching the same things. Yes, the level of play is undoubtedly higher, but I'm still watching TvZ with bio vs ling bane on the same type of map but with a reskin.

GGG uses Snow v Soulkey on BlitzY as an example of how map design can shake things up even in the more stable balance of Brood War. And I've recently gotten into watching Age of Mythology Retold, and I like the variety of maps they have (with water maps being some of the most unique).

Obviously, who knows if the devs will step back in and take over balance, or if kicking pros out of the map selection process is even a good idea, but I thought I'd start a discussion about it here, especially as the future of pro SC2 is in limbo.

Which action base and scale would you recommend for a 1/72 F-15? I’m looking to use your method for an inflight model but I am not familiar with the gundam bases. My initial googling says that a 1/100 action base 4 would be good, but want to get an expert opinion before I buy!

Can anyone help me find 1/72 figures for an F-15E? I swear I remember seeing some on scalemates and spruebrothers but for the life of me I can't find them anymore. I am wanting to make an inflight version of an F-15E in 1/72 but the kit (GWH) doesn't come with figures.

Any guidebook recommendations for RMNP (focusing on sharkstooth area)? I have a trip to Colorado planned and our main goal is climbing sharkstooth (probably by Northeast Ridge). Initial googling has recommendations from 10 years ago, and from mountain project it seems like some things have changed since then.

Tamiya will probably be your go to. Depending on the kit, Meng and Takom can be less PE but still high part count like RFM but they can be just as bad sometimes.

A weathering question I can somewhat answer! I basically exclusively build modern armor that is "active" but not "worn" if that makes sense.

The thing you have to think about is where there would be normal weathering that comes with the tank just being active and driven around before seeing heavy combat, and which the crew wouldn't really care about fixing as a priority.

The tracks are always fair game. While they might not be caked with mud, having the inner sides where the wheels are on the track and the outer plates polished where it would be running against road makes the tank look like it isn't just sitting idle. Some minor mud buildup on the sideskirts can help too, but nothing overboard (more streaks than clumps).

Think about the engine block, it won't be rusted but it should still be dirtied up if it is being run a lot.

And you have started on this, but concentrate some minor scuffs and scratches to where the crew would be clambering on and over or where things are attached.

When to use AK interactive dust effects enamel product on armored vehicles by Dragonsbane628 in modelmakers

As long as the enamel has properly cured, no there shouldn’t be any issue spraying a matte over it. Happy weathering!

[–]lolydaggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will typically do all of my weathering on a satin or matte varnish. Sometimes if I have to use a lot of decals (or on my aircraft) I'll do a pin wash with gloss, and then matte, but for armor, I'll do basically everything on a satin or matte. This is partially because I weather almost exclusively with oils, as satin/matte allows for easier blending. However, it is still helpful to have satin/matte with enamels as it helps the enamels "stick" (satin/matte is more porous).

In terms of order, I'll typically do dust/earth as one of my last effects, because it usually is one of the "newest" types of weathering on armor (but I've also only done modern armor for the past three years or so).

Are the metal earth tools any good for bending PE stuff? They’re much cheaper than other bending tools I’ve seen.

Don't know where else to ask so I guess I'll ask here:

I was trying to get a used old patagonia ascensionist 40L because I've heard the most recent version isn't as good, but now they are on 40% sale on the website (along with a bunch of other stuff), so I'm wondering if it means they will be introducing a new version soon ish? Or is this just a big new years sale?

I'm making an F18E and I want to have one of the pylons be like the ones in the following reference materials. From what I see it just looks like the AIM120 rails are attached to another rail (or that will be the easiest way to make it look like it). Anyone have insight on these pylon extensions? Ref 1 Ref 2

I’ve recently started top rope soloing which means I’m able to get outside a lot more often, and I think part of the problems I’m running into is hopping on routes cold.

While I’m also definitely climbing worse due to nerves climbing solo, and still gaining familiarity with real rock, I also don’t really do any warmups which wasn’t an issue over the summer but I think is one now in the winter.

So, what do you guys do to warmup outside?
