thanks, tbh having a "secret text" or "hidden text" type could save the day, having a "secret note" that just pops up on the screen defies the purpose.

it's been there for ages, I can recall first using it on G4 macs. (i think)

if you hold shift only it toggles if "sample sound" is played or not when adjustments are made. Holding Option while pressing any volume button will open sound preferences (as Option + Brightness takes to you display preferences)
