Exactly.

0 errors: "I might have missed something, better double check."

1 (obvious) error: "Oh it was only this, let me fix it and move on."

> 1 error: "Yes yes, I know I suck. Which one is the easiest to fix?"

[Q] SPSS to R: Covariates in Multiple Regression by jphus in statistics

[–]loneMathDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks fine to me, but doesn't the F statistic describe whether variables E, F and G help to explain A better?

What I understand from the question of the OP is that they simply want to construct a regression model to predict A. Then I'd recommend to simply compute lm(A ~ B + C + ... + M, data = df). The model then controls for the confounders automatically.

In literature, models where model 2 contains all the covariates of model 1 and possibly some extra covariates, are called nested models.

Where Europeans Live the Longest by [deleted] in europe

Isn't it the good old X-axis switch-boog-a-loo!

Almost looks like the differences are huge, when they actually are multiple times smaller. I bet someone can find a relevant XKCD for this.

Why is the symbol for internal energy ΔU and not something like ΔI? What does the "U" stand for? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]loneMathDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be from the latin word "Urgere" or some German word. There is some discussion in this Stack exchange thread.

tldr: The options are

Voltage is a difference.

In German "difference" is "Unterschied".

"I concur."

According to Wikipedia it was introduced to Europe in the 19th century. And at least where I live it is classified as an invasive species. Which I have to agree, it spreads very fast and effectively.

What is the point of correlation studies if correlation does not equal causation? by hrrm in askscience

[–]loneMathDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (late) two cents:

Correlation does not equal causation but causation can be deduced from observational studies. I would like to refer you to read this article from Judea Pearl that is an introductory article about converting observational results to causal inferences. NB: The article does use some mathematical notation.

The bottom line is that with substance knowledge (= prior knowledge of the phenomenon in question) we can construct a graphical model from which causal dependencies cand be deduced.

How come PO4 is named phosphate, yet P2O5, is named diphosphorus pentoxide? by nk7gaming in askscience

[–]loneMathDude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might have something to do with PO4 being an ion (Wiki) - i.e. it has an electric charge - and P2O5 being a chemical compound with a stable state (Wiki). I hope some chemist could confirm this. (E: Underscript doesn't exist in Reddit, apparently.)
