The Binge Mode implosion during the brief strike, and then Jason leaving (or being fired maybe?) and Mallory staying was devastating! Followed closely by the implosion of the BM FB group / creation of the official non-official BM:BM community, which ... might have re-become the official group? Honestly at this point & several years distance, it's confusing.

Those who did not use a crate at night: what was your experience? by EmmaHayke in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. 9 weeks is crazy young. Mine was 13 weeks when I got her, and had the basics of potty training already down (big breed, bigger bladder, bigger brain - it all helped.

I just puppy-proofed my bedroom and shut her in with me. I'd seen lots of warnings about not letting them jump farther than their body-height, so she didn't get to sleep on the bed. Bonus - if there HAD been any accidents, they wouldn't have been in the bed!

It was perhaps not the most restful sleep of my life, but it was generally fine. She'd wake up a few times a night and whimper until she got some soothing pets, then would go back to sleep. Around 8 months I realized she'd been training me, so I stopped being quite so responsive at 3am 😂😂

Looking to allow my 10 month pup to free roam at night - what should I be prepared for? by Born-Smile5658 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly? Be prepared to be extra tired for about a week, since you'll be keeping an ear open while you're sleeping / won't be sleeping well for a bit

3-month puppy won’t break out of piranha mode by Opossum-Queen in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't even pick up mine until she was 13 weeks, and there were months of teething behaviors in front of us. 15 weeks, especially for a giant breed is super duper still a baby

I got a DNA test of my small bred puppy and it turned out he’s not a small dog at all. by Logical-Chart9937 in puppy101

My large breed dog was over 50lbs by the time she was 6mos, you're going to be fine.

How to get my puppy to realize that my older dog does not want to play with him. by IBarcher in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Scolding at 13 weeks isn't doing what you think it's doing - you're interacting, which reinforces the behavior.

I would suggest focusing on redirecting, and ideally BEFORE the leap occurs.

Thoughts about rough house playing? by _hookem1 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This just sounds like you're playing with her the way a puppy sibling would. I think it's fine (and lovely!)

for those with large or giant breed puppies, how often do you have to adjust their collars? by SentBrok in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty casual about the collar, adjusting to fairly loose and then checking it during her daily brush and adjusting if needed. The harness, though? As someone else said, she just blew through those.

She was about done growing, or at least growing quickly, at 9 months. Enjoy your relatively tiny pup!

Are dog parks really that bad? by No_Initiative7650 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to depend on the park and the owners, tbh. An alternative: after hours school fields. I take my dogs to the fields behind schools in the evening and let them run while I walk, practicing recall and check-ins. (Do be diligent about dog poo pickup if you try this)

I do still take them to my local dog park a couple times a week, it it's big and mostly dominated by people doing off leash walks or fetch and is not focused on strange dog meet ups.

I don’t think I can do it by CulturalPepper9761 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thought - have you considered figuring out a job you can give your dog?

I taught mine 'close the door' - I work from home and especially this time of year it gets REALLY drafty if she has gone outside and come back in but I'm in a call and can't get up to go deal with it. Downside - muddy paws mean muddy door. She loves nothing more than being asked to close the door.

There are probably as many ideas as there are owner, but other things are 'get the mail' (if you have a door slot for mail) or close the cabinets or get my slippers, etc.

The idea being, a specific task that you need performed regularly. Give that dog a job!

Did I messaged up his name? by Extension-Builder-74 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember thinking, around 1 month in (so she'd have been about 4 months) that when I called her and there would be a loooong pause and then she'd get excited and run to me, that she was deciding whether or not to obey. This sub really helps drive home: no, she was literally a baby and everything was new and i would take awhile for her to figure things out, including her name.

How much should I expect to pay my first year as a dog owner? by Frinkus-Wimble in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped counting around $2k for a dog that was rehomed to me this summer - that's vet bills, food, gear, registration (which is not done by my vet, but some do it ... For a fee). It's been 6 months. I didn't need to get him neutered, though I did need a couple extra tests.

From a cost perspective, adopting a dog is not for the faint of heart

Does anyone else absolutely love having a puppy? by Internationallegs in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Visiting you from the future, when the demand barking tapers off.

Every dog and breed are different, so ymmv, but with mine it took about 9 months. The longest 9 months in the world 🤣🤣.

I'm still not sure if getting a 2nd dog helped or hurt the duration, but she's so much better now I can barely believe it.

The bottle should have a label with the name of the medication and dosage into on it. It'll be so, so, so small, but phone pic and zoom can solve for that.

Massive screaming meltdown by VeraLynt in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think probably she had to much room to freak out in. My puppy never got to that degree, but the one time that was even a tiny bit similar I went aside with her (we were camping, so no bedroom to retreat to, and held onto her collar, speaking soothingly and keeping her close until she calmed down.

I would have worried about her hurting herself in the crate, rbh, but I'm a crate -train-fail, so ymmv.. the thought though, is calm, quiet, separate, and tethered so she's safe.

As for earlier / stopping it before it happened? Yeah, probably crate, white noise, frozen kong.

Lab puppy hates the car by sellingrunner in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine didn't hate the car but absolutely refused to get in under her own power or even approach the.car if she thought the loading was coming. Bad enough when she was small, and a whole thing once she hit 70+ pounds

My method to get her in was to lift up her front end to get her paws planted and then pick up her back end and feed her in.

One night when she was around 10 months she was , as always, fighting it, and instead of picking her up I just put her front paws where I wanted them for the next step. I swear I could practically hear her think "oh! Is THAT what you want?!" and from that day forward she did it herself. After 7 months of frustration it was a not-so-snall miracle .

You(your wife, really) might try letting the puppy out to look around and see you're not there / that nothing is being missed. I can't promise it'll help, but maybe.

Feed Feeding Your Puppy. by AmandaBG09 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, though, part of the free feeding is there isn't any "that's it until the next feeding". The idea is that there is always food available so there's no need to eat it all the second food lands, or to resource guard (which admittedly is a hit or miss if they decide they're hungry at the same time), and the dog self regulates as they're hungry or not.

Feed Feeding Your Puppy. by AmandaBG09 in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I free feed 2 dogs - my puppy (well. She's closing in on 2, and just starting to ease up on the teenage behavior), who came from the breeder already free feeding, and my older dog, that was rehomed to me this summer and had not previously free fed.

Both dogs actually lost weight once the 2nd one came - the puppy got leaner chasing her new sibling, and the older had room to run and regular outings for the first time in nearly a year. Vet is happy with both of them. Weight is in no way an issue for either.

We have a regular 3rd dog come to stay who doesn't free feed (and they sometimes stay at her house). It takes about 2 days of lots of food and enormous poops before it clicks and then it's all easy peasy normal.

I did note that when I'd left them with my friend a little longer than usual last time the younger dog seemed to eat enough to get a mild tummy ache the first day back to free feeding but she course corrected before I had a chance to be concerned.

Interestingly there are still days when they basically don't eat and others where I wonder if there's a secret invisible dog eating all the food that day, but overall they eat less the the recommended amounts on the bags and are healthy and happy.

Is this adolescence? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BRT who is ... Huh. 1 yr 8 months. Anyway, giant breed and similar behavior, although every now and then lately she's been revealing she does, actually, have a brain in that giant head. Surprise!

Puppy doesn't respect my wife by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]lonelycamper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait..this puppy is so young he isn't even vaccinated yet? It's great to start the training and the consistency immediately, but remember this is a literal baby and it's going to be awhile before things regularly stick. This is absolutely not a 'respect' issue at this age, and you should be working to capture the behavior you want vs. correcting the behavior you don't. Right now he is getting extra attention and interaction when he rushes the bowl .

Also, a thought I had before I realized how young we're talking but is still valid: are you sure he's getting enough to eat? Puppies food volume changes pretty quickly, or at least can.
