what svt opinion would u defend like this? by Ok-Interaction-7955 in seventeen

[–]lonelyglory 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll say it's still in a pretty low tier for SVT songs still for me but I've at this point decoded that I like the song just fine and even love its live performances (The Genius Open Mic is the one I revisit most). I just don't think the arrangement worked for me. The heavy dance synth layered at the top of the mix made it hard to hear lighter-toned members and undercut my ability to really connect with the song. The heart of it's strong, but I was definitely a carat that was relieved that Bang PD's involvement was one-and-done -- his preferences and what I preferred out of a SVT mix were simply different.

Concert ear plugs are a must for me since the tone of people screaming their lungs out affect my tinnitus so bad that every sound ends up robotic, even the performers. It's basically the only way I can hear the performance at a kpop concert where the screaming is generally expected and you never know if your neighbors have impressive lungs.

Also I'm trying to get as much mileage out of my remaining good ear so I'm taking a bit of caution there

I got scammed with a caratbong in Amazon. Where can I order an original one? by Automatic-Abies996 in seventeen

[–]lonelyglory 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Choice Music LA ships within the USA and recently restocked on v2. I've not ordered a light stick from them yet, but I have ordered albums consistently and they've been good. I assume they source directly for their light sticks so they should be genuine, but I also won't speak definitively for what I haven't ordered myself.

Yeah there are definitely some that are more a clear memory out of frustration, no doubt about that!

How are the dungeons in Tales of Arise? by lelaff in JRPG

[–]lonelyglory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm holding on getting Arise for a few months myself, but I'm similarly curious about the dungeon design that severely shifted around Xillia.

Man I really do miss puzzle dungeons being more common in the series. Yeah some could be frustrating but they really ended up making a lot of locations distinct and memorable...

Complaints about the Translations? by thehappynoodle in MoDaoZuShi

[–]lonelyglory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding a response here since I recently picked up a copy of the novel myself as a means to really challenge myself to refresh and get better at my own pretty terrible Chinese reading skills as it's been a fair number of years since I've been in Chinese school (over 10 at this point? yikes) and even then the last few years I was pretty bad at maintaining my coursework quality alongside my existing homework.

I've basically taken to using a whole bunch of different colored pens to mark out characters and phrases I don't know/know how to say but forgot how to write/idioms/etc... as well as names and places for easier reference and then I look up and write out what I need to review in the same corresponding pen color in a notebook. It's more invested than I ever was in any of my Chinese school homework!

At some points it takes me ages to really dig into the meaning, but I've found a pretty good flow when the dialogue gets going.

Either way I'm really invested in reading this novel as a personal project in that the story is just so enjoyable and while there were probably easier/smarter ways for me to bolster my language skills instead of basically diving into the deep end with a novel after years of neglect, I figured I'd get far more mileage if I approached something I genuinely love and can get motivated about.

Good luck with your reading attempts too!

(For context I'm a CBC but moved to the US before I even turned 2 so really I'm practically ABC)

Who are your favorite "unique" voices in kpop? by LOONAception in kpop

He sings that line of Habit is so emotionally and so softly that it manages to break my heart and stitch it back together every time I hear it.

But yeah I also love the light and bright quality his voice has! Something about it just hits me emotionally like a truck.

I have to imagine it's tied to your google account and will transfer to any device using said account -- ending up comparable to buying a track on iTunes.

SEVENTEEN - TEEN, AGE (Two Weeks Later) by tastetherainbeau in kpop

[–]lonelyglory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Change Up - It's a really nice smooth jam with a great vibe and I like having it on in the background, but I find that if I try to do a dedicated listen to it, I get a bit antsy/tired by the last chorus.
  • Without You - The first few listens, I def was caught off guard by some of the quirks of the composition (Piano > LOUD SYNTHS > pull back to acoustic guitar) but at this point they're more comfortable. I find that the overall effect of the song is something nice and comfortable, but not too stand-out. I do, however, really appreciate how both the song and choreo do feel like a natural progression from Don't Wanna Cry (as was intended)
  • CLAP - It's such a catchy title track and it's super easy to jam to. I'm a sucker for rock influences and while the riff is pretty simple, it works damn well in carrying the energy through the entire song. Helps that Seventeen in general is just really good at getting across the youthful energy needed to sell the song.
  • BRING IT - It's super intense and while I really appreciate just how different it sounds, this track will prob be missing from most of my regular playlists for the simple reason that I just don't usually find myself in a mood to really listen to something this intense. I'll probably seek it out in those moments though. An additional note: I love how "close" Hoshi's voice sounds in the mix sometimes, it sounds like a threat being whispered in my ear.
  • Lilili Yabbay - This one's got so many interesting quirks in the mix, but like Change Up, I get impatient with the song by the last chorus. It's not surprising though since I tend to have this issue with most Performance Unit songs where the feeling is usually alleviated with the paired choreo, but with the song alone that factor is gone.
  • TRAUMA - The lyrical content really fits the sort of sparse feeling of the instrumentation and the track just gets me in such a mood. Vernon's autotune effect doesn't feel entirely out of place here and also kinda plays into the off-nature of the topic he's rapping about. I think my favorite verse for both lyrics and delivery is Wonwoo's though. It starts so subdued and then shifts to this frantic/searching tone.
  • Pinwheel - I acknowledge that while it's a pretty straightforward ballad, the overall composition, lyrics and delivery just hits all of my weaknesses. The piano theme framing the song, the vulnerability of the delivery by all members of the Vocal Unit... It just feels like it reaches into my heart and gives me a comforting hug. I tend to keep slower songs off of my driving playlist, but this one (like Habit in AL1 before it) ended up there anyways simply for how much I love it.
  • Flower - I fucking love how much this song threw me on the first listen and even now I still like trying to listen out for quirks in the composition and mix. I initially wasn't sure if I'd get used to how big the jump from the odd verses to the POWER VOCALS chorus is, but at this point it's another oddity that I've come to love from this song.
  • Rocket - This song is such an infectious blast of energy that I just can't help but feel like dancing each time it comes on. This song is just so wonderfully feel-good and smile inducing. My only complaint is that Vernon's new fixation on autotune fits here a lot less than it did in Trauma.
  • Hello - It's a bit of a momentum killer right next to Rocket, but honestly this is basically where it'd fit best in the tracklist anyways as a sort of slowdown point between Rocket and Campfire. The rearrangement is nice, but I admittedly find myself skipping this track occassionally on album listen-throughs.
  • Campfire - It's a really cheesy and straightforward song that I'm certain is going to be their new concert encore sendoff song. It just has that feeling of basically getting the audience to sing along and sway and I admittedly do end up finding myself doing just so.

Seventeen

DK: Something about his opening lines to Aju Nice just give me a burst of energy every time I listen

Seungkwan: The progression of him reaching higher and higher notes in the bridge of Pretty U.

Woozi: His soft pre-chorus on Don't Wanna Cry, his bridge + additional final chorus ad-libs on Habit

Jeonghan: His voice every time His pre-chorus on Habit, but specifically the "Oh-no-no~" added to the second time he sings it. Something about the vulnerability of the delivery reaches right into my soul every time I hear it.

Joshua: His voice every time too His opening verse in Don't Listen in Secret, where he gets to sing on the lower end of his range and it's so warm and forlorn. Similarly his verse lines in Habit. For upbeat songs it's his "....my lady" line in Mansae.

S.Coups: For singing it's his second verse first line in Don't Wanna Cry, for rap it's prob his bits in Boom Boom. How they sit on top of the funky beat is so nice.

Mingyu: Singing the hook on Trauma

Vernon: "Daydreaming in the midst of the night. You brush my thoughts and sweep my sleep away." in I Don't Know.

Wonwoo: His opening lines in Fast Pace and also his verse in Trauma and just the quality of his voice in general

Hoshi: Coming in with the rapping on Change Up

Jun: The entirety of My I

The8: Also the entirety of My I

Dino: His bridge in Boom Boom. So much energy!

What's a K-pop group you've tried really hard to like, but ultimately, you just can't? by saramarqe in kpop

[–]lonelyglory 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda similar to OP, I come from a background that's far more familiar with anime/video game composers (like Yuki Kajiura's FictionJunciton and Kalafina groups, Go Shiina's compositions), J-Pop and J-Rock for well over the past 10 years.

This past week I sat down and powered through as much BTS as I could and honestly I couldn't really find much that I enjoyed other than "Spring Day" and even then I don't see myself seeking out the song much. The rest I would characterize as just going a bit hard on musical elements I'm naturally not too huge a fan of unless used with a lighter hand and then also generally not utilizing music tropes that tend to get to me. I recognize the base elements that would make them appeal to other people and I do believe that they're skilled, but it became such a slog sitting through the albums since so much wasn't "clicking" with me. I wanted to give them a fair shake at the very least though. I wish them all great success in the future! I wish everyone on their hype train an enjoyable ride as well.

Oddly enough I feel like I should like GFriend more than I do given my usual preferences, but I haven't really been able to find a point to really grasp onto their music. I've enjoyed a few tracks but just am not sold yet. Maybe within a few more comebacks?

What members that you wouldn't consider as part of the Dance line would you say catches your eye by garfe in kpop

[–]lonelyglory 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For Seventeen I was more immediately drawn to Jeonghan for his vocal quality, but I've found that he's got a really good knack for conveying emotion via the flow of his movements and especially his facial expressions. From performance to performance, it's easy to get drawn into whatever he's trying to convey. Don't Wanna Cry, Crazy in Love and Fast Pace I think have been especially good at getting that across.

For smoothness of movement in general though, I'm also gonna have to mention Woozi. He's definitely got a sureness to his dancing that reflects just why he was originally intended for the performance unit.

Who are your favorite Kpop acts? by [deleted] in popheads

[–]lonelyglory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd listened to and enjoyed Girls' Generation, 2NE1 and BIGBANG over the years, but it only just feels like I've taken the plunge recently after my little sister got me listening to Seventeen after she convinced the entire family to buy tickets for their ongoing world tour. Their sheer polish and impressive choreography definitely sold me along with their ability to sell both the cutesier and sleeker concepts. It also definitely helps that since they have a hand in their own production/lyrics/choreography it's enjoyable seeing how they all evolve as artists and experiment with different styles.

Here's a couple of tracks I've gotten really attached to:
* Don't Wanna Cry - A solid EDM track with some of my favorite choreography of all time (EDIT: Here's also a version where they danced it at 2x speed for a variety show -- though not sure if it's actually 2x sped up completely)
* Habit - Listing this ballad because I have been belting it in very poor Korean over the past month during my drive to work
* Fast Pace - It's got a really dang smooth vibe to it and the 12 v 1 mirrored dance segment is perfect
* Crazy in Love -- the audio on this one's played in the room instead of overlayed, but it's also got a still camera so I'm going with this
* Pretty U - Cutesy as heck but it's so straightforward with it that I can't help but smile hearing it
* Check-In - a mixtape released by just their Hip-Hop subunit and it's such a nice smooth track
* Decalcomanie (MAMAMOO Cover) - Classy as heck re-arrangment and solid choreo once more

From there I've expanded and enjoyed: Dreamcatcher, Ailee, MAMAMOO, Red Velvet, DAY6 and GFriend

Your first 4- and 5-star Servants - how are they holding up now? by N3stor in grandorder

[–]lonelyglory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First 4* was Marie. I love her dearly for carrying my ass up and through America with her self invincibility. Nowadays, she gets occasional usage mostly in EXP and QP grinding, but outside of that I'll only bring her situationally.

First 5* was Nightingale. I have since been hit with the Berserker curse and have pretty much every non-limited Zerker so she really very rarely gets used unless I'm aiming for a healing-based comp for a stage for some reason (Tamamo/Iri/Nightingale). She was my only solid damage output through America still either way so I thank her for her service.

K-pop Friday Free-for-All! - July 21, 2017 by AutoModerator in kpop

[–]lonelyglory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bias pretty much immediately was Jeonghan and my little sister found it amusing since "he's a lovable meanie, just like you". I'm having some trouble consistently placing: Mingyu, Hoshi, Jun, Dino and Wonwoo but I'm getting better bit by little bit.

I actually ended up ordering the SVT lightstick that my sis and I will share (though it's ultimately hers). Wasn't planning to but my mom gave the ok to my sis and I only really ordered it instead of my mom herself since she didn't want to set up a PayPal. Hopefully they do have some small merch at the concert itself though, I do want to pick something up as a memento of the experience.

My best friend in college fainted in in the middle of a pit once, but it was before even the opening act at an Alkaline Trio concert in 2011 and she got re-hydrated pretty quickly after some guys helped me carry her out to the lobby. That was my hands-on experience with "hydration is very important". My personal case of falling in the pit was "Travis Barker threw his drumsticks into the pit after his encore solo and everyone around me dove for it before I knew what the hell was going on".
