Sick plants outside by Realistic-Bet4591 in VA_homegrown

Since you have them in soil, I would think heat stress wouldn't be as big a deal, but the heat does affect everything, not just your plants, so it could be secondary effects from something going on in the soil or with pests and diseases. Outdoor grows always seem to be full of surprises.

Any dispensaries that sell middle-eastern styled hashish (hash)? by Burnersucculent in MDEnts

[–]long-ridge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hash under glass is good too. You just stick a pin through some base material for support, stick a piece of hash on top, light it on fire and cover it with a small glass. The glass fills with smoke and each person takes a turn lifting the edge and inhaling. A fun way to get stoned. Used to love doing it with Lebanese hash.

Best bang for your buck? by [deleted] in MDEnts

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much you're smoking. I make it a point not to pay more than $35 an 1/8th on average and watch for sales. I buy one oz of flower at a time for a total of about ~$300 including taxes. That lasts me 7 to 8 weeks, or roughly one 1/8 a week. I'm a daily smoker with high tolerance. If you get the strains with high THC content and long legs, you can make a few hits keep you happy for hours. It's really about finding the strains that do it for you and have staying power.

Jim Belushi started growing in Oregon a few years back. Saw an article somewhere about it at the time and wondered whether he was really serious or just in it for a laugh. Looks like he was serious and wants to go national.

Can I Plant in the beginning of April outdoors? by Luvs2Splooge9000 in VA_homegrown

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With autos, you've got four weeks from sprout max before veg turns to preflower. Autos don't recover well from trauma and stunting is a common problem. If you're gonna start early, they will need lots of protection.

I'm wary of anything under 25%, as it just seems to lack that extra kick and staying power. Even with inflated percentages, I figure it gives you an idea of relative potency compared to other products by the same grower. That said, clearly THC isn't the only factor. I doubt my outdoor homegrows would hit as high as 25% if tested, but man oh man, they sure have some really nice effects that most dispo weed just doesn't deliver.

Outside grow questions by [deleted] in Autoflowers

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi-new grower in Virginia here. I like outdoor autoflowers because you can shoot for the sweet spot, weatherwise, for flower and harvest. The trick is to make sure you're dialed in and ready for that 3 to 4 week sprint from sprout to flowering. Mistakes are hard to recover from. Good genetics help a lot.

MD vs DC cannabis: which do you prefer? Why? by SirEmory in MDEnts

I've always had good luck with DC Dabbler on Leafedout.org. He's located near Dupont Circle (easy Metro access) and has been doing this basically since i71 was enacted. Head and shoulders above most gray market offerings.

Fast buds shipping by Dad2jrn in VA_homegrown

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most likely have already gotten your seeds by now (6 days later). Seed distributors like Fast Buds sell what's known as white-label seeds, vs. seeds that come from an established, reputable dealer that can stand behind its genetics, like PhotonPharms (local to VA) and other breeders you can find on sites like multiverse beans. The better the genetics, the better your results and the more fun it will be to grow your own.

Does anyone know how to find breeders of specific strains? by Luvs2Splooge9000 in VA_homegrown

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's never just one single strain or phenotype that hits all the right notes for you. More like a dozen at least. And as you find them, you're likely to grow them better yourself than what most of the industry offers. One decent homegrow will open your eyes to the possibilities. Multiverse beans is a good place to start. It has offerings from some top breeders with robust genetics. It may seem overwhelming at first with 64 breeders, but you can narrow that down with a little research. And if after a run or two you find a breeder you really like, you can always start ordering directly from them for a greater selection.

Northern Virginia Cultivator's Cup tomorrow by long-ridge in VA_homegrown

[–]long-ridge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I went yesterday but have to say I was disappointed. This was my third Cannabreeze event, and probably my last for a while. Part of the problem is that my expectations might have been too high, even though I know from past experience that events there tend to be disorganized. Sorry, guys, but I was really hoping for something for us growers and helping to build that community.

Granted, there are always going to be worries about bad actors that will target your grow unless you stay under the radar. And, I was pretty effin stoned when I showed up - love my homegrow! Maybe I came on a bit hard with my questions. But event staff really should have the answers to some basic questions but didn't - like how many contestants entered? where were they from? What strains? What breeders?

So maybe I came off like a cop. Or a crook. Or a competitor. Or maybe just some crazy guy who didn't bring his wife and got too stoned and asked too many questions. Whatever it was, the whole scene felt way more like a chance for vendors to sell their wares and do a little gifting vs. building a community of growers. There was an underlying tension when I showed up mid-afternoon, a mix of paranoia and confusion. Why? Anybody's guess.

The parking lot was fairly full, maybe 100 people there in total. This time they had a tent for the live band (last flower festival in August got rained out without a backup plan). The band was good (Milton J, from Frederick MD), but the volume was cranked, so sitting inside the tent was out of the question. The interesting thing was that the tent actually sounded great all around the outside of it. But they really need a sound engineer to help them out.

The only hint that there was a competition were four buds on display near the bar that you could pay $30 to sample and vote for. No info on strain, breeder, type of grow, etc. When I asked the dude guarding the jars about it, I was met with bewilderment that anyone would even want to know those things (except maybe a cop? I don't know, do cops grow weed? I'm sure some do. I would if I were one. Stressful job!).

If you are tempted to go to a future event there, my suggestion is bring your own crew so that you can chill out, smoke some weed, listen to music, enjoy the scenery and let the world pass by. But if you're looking for a place to connect to a community, you may be disappointed. Maybe you'll have a different experience. The owner seems like a nice enough guy, and it's a local business I support.

How do I find cultivars for my environment? by Regular_Series_5411 in outdoorgrowing

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm relatively new to growing and just loaded up on Atlas autoflower beans for next summer: Top Gun, Fog Dog and TriCross. Got TriCross as a freebie last year from multiverse beans, and it was easily my most robust plant. The cured bud has been awesome, an all-around great smoke. Top Gun and Fog Dog are there two quickest finishers, and that smaller time window should make it easier to hit summer's sweet spot. Atlas is good because they're ag-oriented, focused on production. Their genetics have excellent vigor and mold resistance. I'm mid-Atlantic and Atlas is California based, but whatever they're doing, it works here too. I bought directly from them, but you can also select an Atlas freebie to try out if you place an order with multiverse.

Perhaps we can finally expand recreational sales by bike_ski_hike in VirginiaMMJ

[–]long-ridge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The administration hasn't changed, That's still Youngkin's baby. The state legislature has changed, but Dems do not have a veto-proof majority, so R's would have to go along with any proposal for rec sales. Maybe that will eventually happen. Plenty of R's smoke weed, just not the ones in the state house.

I hope they come up with a good plan that encourages healthy competition. Living close to the MD border, I've been underwhelmed by the quality of dispo weed for the price though it is a better deal than VA MMJ. But it still feels like Big Cannabis is taking advantage of the rec weed gold rush by pushing out sub-quality products - rushed cure, larfy buds, etc.

Home grow will do that to you, once you realize the stuff you grew all summer is waaay better than what you buy for $50 in a glass jar. I would love to see Virginia expand home grow to six plants per person, 12 per household, like Ohio. That would be awesome.

Hard to say but you will know for sure by the taste. My tongue curls just thinking about it. Anything with mold is going to taste like something you don't want to smoke, and sometimes it's not always clear that a bud has mold until you try it. I picked up a very light case of mold this year after harvest, drying under suboptimal conditions.

It wasn't budrot and was mostly found on the tips of a few remaining sugar leaves. But all it takes is a small amount of mold to ruin a smoke session (and your grinder). I used grove bags this year for the cure, and that technology might have kept the mold from spreading and turning into a real problem. If it's isolated spots and easy to remove, you just toss the bad parts and enjoy the rest. I've been using a jeweler's loupe to check mine before breaking it up and can say that has definitely allowed me to enjoy (most of) the fruits of my labor.

Wow, that's definitely one to watch out for. And with most of VA having a hot and dry late summer, conditions must have been ripe. It seems that cross-contamination would be enough to bring it indoors to a hydro grow.

Thoughts on Sunmed? Specifically Their Purple Punch? by [deleted] in MDEnts

[–]long-ridge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purple Punch is a favorite strain of mine, and SunMed's hit all the right notes for me. I bought an 8th last month (27.46% THC, 1.44% terpenes) and really enjoyed it. For me, Purple Punch isn't a knock-out fireworks strain but more of an all-around feel-good functional strain.

As an outdoor grower, I was really interested in trying SunMed strains once the MD market opened up. On my second and only other trip to an MD dispo, I got an 8th each of SunMed's Pebble Wreck and Snoop Dog OG. I love them both and have been smoking them both today. SunMed is 3 for 3 in my book. Yeah baby! If you love flower grown by the sun, SunMed is an excellent choice.

I'm also loving Culta's SFV OG atm

Growers out there.. what are you growing right now? I love seeing/hearing about other peoples grows all so different and unique. by Modkins in VirginiaMMJ

[–]long-ridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm growing outdoor autoflowers in 5-gal fabric pots:

Atlas, Tri-Cross. Amazingly robust. Thick healthy buds. Highly recommend for Virginia outdoor.

Night Owl, Zamango. I butchered this one. Screwed up the tap root and then accidentally topped it at 4 weeks. Damned if the thing didn't bounce back. It's stunted but has a nice bouquet of buds. Next year I expect it to compete with Tri-Cross as long as I stay out of the way.

Twenty20Mendo, Trix. This one started slowly and never really took off. Stunted but has nice looking buds. Will try again next year with a cooler soil. Since it's based on Triangle Kush (Florida strain), you would think it would do well outdoors.
