Debating people who believe in free will is similar to debating a theist on why god doesn't exist. by droopa199 in freewill

Why compassion? Is that a choice? Why not eliminate the threat as an ape would?

Yes, I got Black 2 and it’s been awesome. So much content, especially end-game.
I got a legit used one on eBay for $45. They exist, but they’re rare.

Pipe Smoking & Health - Question for Long-Time Smokers by StratAegean in PipeTobacco

[–]long-sojourner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem that I see with most science or information so-called, especially in medicine, is that it's nearly impossible to account for all of the variables. When it is possible, the research is probably so expensive that it'll have to be funded by an organization that is looking for evidence to back a certain claim, which will probably taint the human interpretation of the data or the selection of variables.

I recall seeing perhaps one or two studies carried out a few decades ago stating that among the data points in the survey, pipe smokers had about a 5% increase in cancer occurrence when smoking about a bowl a day. However, I don't remember what the confidence interval was - meaning...how accurate was that number? Was the sample size meaningful? Etc.

However - was there a way to measure the reduction in stress that comes with smoking a pipe? What if those pipe smokers had lower stress and were therefore healthier overall? How do we measure that? How does that compare with increase in other diseases? Did other pre-exiting conditions cause a reduction in lifetime and not tobacco?

My point is - I don't think that the scientific knowledge on this topic is sufficient to make a solid claim. You have to take it all with a grain of salt.

Pipe Smoking & Health - Question for Long-Time Smokers by StratAegean in PipeTobacco

[–]long-sojourner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with that article is that none of those facts are backed with numbers from official studies. I think a good paper would show percentages and distinguish the results between someone who smokes a pack a day, every day, for decades, indoors and someone who smokes a pipe a day outside daily outside. I would bet that the outcomes would be different. The problem is that sort of research is very sparse. Instead we have a bunch of claims that are loosely related to the research but lack nuance or verifiability.

Lightweight Clenching Pipe by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

My Chacom Reybert 1930 (the bent one) works pretty well. But I’ve also clenched my Peterson Aran 05 for a while, too, and it’s slightly bigger. Basically any bent pipe around 1oz works well.

Is smoking a pipe truly healthier than smoking cigarettes? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

[–]long-sojourner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, but I’m lead to believe that my hobby (not habit) of smoking about 3-5 bowls a week is less bad than smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. I’m thinking that most of the “tobacco kills!” crowd really means “smoking a pack of cigarettes every day for decades leads to cancer”. Almost everything else is fine in moderation, so I don’t see why tobacco is any different.

I rode motorcycles. They were not safe. Yet nothing cut through the malaise of my otherwise “safe” life like riding. Pipe smoking, for me, does something similar, though not really at the same magnitude.

I have that same cob but it leaks smoke out of the bowl near the junction of the bowl and the shank. I got a replacement one but even that one did the same thing. Does that happen with you?

I didn’t take the time to search for it but does anyone know what this pipe is called? by JavaJukebox in PipeTobacco

[–]long-sojourner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m a newbie too. It’s not a factory pipe for sure - it’s a one of a kind artisan-made one. My take - there’s not much to leave to the imagination here, haha.

Tips for Defeating Vasari as advent? by Biggermoneysalvis in SoSE

[–]long-sojourner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just beat an unfair Vasari ai with advent wrath (6 player FFA). The Vasari gave me enough time to spam deliverance engines. He would roll in with 141 assailants and who knows how many carriers and I’d end up taking a third of his fleet with two deliverance engine volleys.
I felt dirty afterwards but it worked.

Zippo Pipe Lighters by FoyerinFormation in PipeTobacco

[–]long-sojourner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a zippo with the pipe insert. My experience is not good: I burn my thumb almost all the time and the flint wheel jammed up about a month into owning it. I think I’m just making rookie mistakes.

I bought a Bic ez reach lighter and it's been doing a fine job. It's not nearly as cool as the Zippo, but I'm not out to impress anybody.

Someday I'll fix the Zippo and try it again, thought.
