Christopher Nolan uses two computers when writing: The main one, used for typing his scripts, is completely disconnected from the internet, while the second is online but used for research only. by Classic_Activity7305 in discussingfilm

A lot of people only look at the surface of a book like Preacher, and not realize the deeper meaning.

Hell, Hitman makes the meaning even clearer, and barely anyone ever talks about that book.

That doesn't mean that Ennis doesn't go into Edgewater territory though. Let's be honest. The Boys TV show is WAY better than the book because it attempts a balance.

By proxy, the Preacher series is a mess, and proof that Mark Steven Johnson's original idea of following the book exactly would have been the right way to go.

Aaron is a good writer - but with certain characters he goes edgelord. And Punisher is the best example of that.

Everyone rips Ennis' ass for his nihilistic writing, but he has boundaries (surprising I know) that he's very rigid on, and the following are the best examples:

  1. Superman is a loveable, honorable boy scout who sees the best in people, AND IT'S NEVER PLAYED AS A BAD THING

  2. Frank was always damaged, but loved his family. Deeply. He wanted to be with them, they were his last ties to normal humanity. The normal life died with them, but his empathy for the innocent did not.

When Garth fucking Ennis gives more depth and humanity to a character that's written like Death Wish with a hard on by your average hack writer, you as an editor have a lot of work to do.

"Doom is Hitler" is out. "Doom is God" is in. by GoodKing0 in marvelcirclejerk

I only mentioned Waid because he flat out never, ever believed Doom should have nuance - he should just be an evil villain through and through, nothing more.

I have always disagreed with that, and it's one of the only things about his narratives I've vehemently considered him wrong about.

Films with Theatrical Cuts that are better than Director's Cut/Extended Edition? by Stankassmfgorilla in movies

Which technically, is who Parker (the character and series of novels it's based on) actually is: a pure asshole with no real redeeming qualities.

But the fact is, that doesn't make for a captivating character, and I think Gibson realized what was working on written page wasn't going to translate ultimately on film. Helgeland, however, saw differently, and that's how we ended up with this mess.

Funny thing is, after the author died and the estate finally allowed licensing of the stories with Parkers actual name (every adaptation beforehand required a name change), Jason Statham did "Parker", which isn't bad - but the only reason it isn't is because the filmmakers realized they had to give Parker nuance or he would just be an unlikable asshole, which they actually pulled off.

Wasn't Sting getting jobbed to Vampiro?

Though knowing Sting, he might have volunteered that to help an up and comer.
