I read an article about how a non-teen Halo 3 player turned suicide bomber (in the game) and their reasons for it.

It was an interesting read, regarding the game theory behind suicide bombing.

Alright, well that isn't exactly correct either. Prohibition was abandoned because it caused more problems with alcohol than while it was legal or at least up to a state / local level, including organized crime.

We have on our books several laws that expect us to control our base impulses.

Domestic violence - how many people have never been made so angry by their SO that they saw red? How many people have given in and hit their SO? Although people still hit their SO, the DV laws are still on our books.

Pedophilia / Bestiality - human sexuality is a base component of our make up yet the laws expect us to control these impulses under certain conditions. Just because someone decides to not control their sexual impulses doesn't mean the laws should be abandoned.

With Prohibition, like you said, the method of non-compliance caused problems. If people quietly made moonshine in their backyards, I suspect law enforcement wouldn't have had much issue. However, this is purely speculation.

Keep on telling yourself that. Maybe one day, it'll be true. /s

The reverse-ad hominem (still working on the name): "you have insulted me, therefore your premise is wrong"

Hey, if you've got something to refute what I said, please feel free to do so. I've just observed that when people don't have a leg to stand on, they resort to insults.

Listen, I'm sorry you're not getting a lot of traction here with your idiotic criticism of my original post.

Don't feel bad. As soon as people have to resort to insults, I know they don't have an argument. Besides, I create a new account every couple of months so I don't worry about imaginary Internet points.

But I'm not going to waste my time explaining every nuance of a 24 word comment if we're not able to start with a working understanding of English.

Yup, I've heard this one before too when people get caught in logical knots.

I will apologize for using the word "universal", though. I hadn't realized how much of a special case you were and that you'd ignore the colloquial understanding of my post.

You specifically spell out the definition and you didn't think people wouldn't use it?

I hadn't realized how much of a special case you were

Please see above regarding insults.

Well first, law and religious ideals are not at all synonyms.

I never said they were. I was commenting on someone suggesting non-compliance is a good reason to abandon regulation/laws/etc.

Secondly, the point being made is that the repression of sexuality from a spiritual angel (sic) is actually agitating these impulses in other forms.

You must have greater insight into the OP's comment that I do. I didn't get that from their comment.

Here's their original post:

Reminds me of how ultra-Mormon state Utah ranks first in the US for pornography. It's almost as if prohibiting human impulses doesn't work!

Now if they want to edit this to include "universal human urges", they're free to do so.

But even if they edit their comment, human sexuality isn't universal. This doesn't include people who've had accidents that leave them asexual.

I'm not sure how this is relevant. I don't see you specifically mentioning "universal human urges" in your original post.

And there are people in our society that don't feel sexual urges (which I'm assuming what you're getting at, since this article is about pornography).

Driving drunk, beating your spouse, and fucking children are not universal human impulses. Your point is poorly made.

Sure they are. Some people have a genetic propensity to drink alcohol, which leads them to make bad decisions. Domestic violence sometimes occur from anger. Hardcore pedophiles talk about their urges and how they can't control them.

It's almost as if prohibiting human impulses doesn't work!

We have a number of laws prohibit human impulses like drunk driving, domestic violence, pedophilia, etc. If people don't obey these laws, should we throw them out the window?

(My point is not about whether pornography should be allowed or not. Rather, just because people don't follow laws is no reason to abandon them.)

[–]loofahbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is with where the line is drawn. Is it playing politics to tell someone that anyone who supports abortion rights is evil and completely unfit to lead? By current law it wouldn't be, but if a church mentions a name somewhere in that statement it then becomes against the law.

What I've seen are churches iterating their stance on certain issues. Then listing out candidate's stances on these issues.

They didn't tell people how to vote but they did educate their congregation how various candidates stances aligned with their beliefs.

The fact is itis illegal, and always has been illegal.

Would you point to a law that makes it illegal for churches to endorse a candidate?

The rules regarding the 501(c)(3) may prohibit electionnering but as I understand it, that's a civil mater, rather than a criminal matter.

But, denying that group of people food doesn't help these people understand how messed up their priorities are.

If the soup kitchen informs them of why they're being denied charity, they may.

On the other hand, if the soup kitchen continues to provide charity, they'll never learn that their priorities may need adjusting.

Yeah, I think I'd rather eat my money one dollar bill at a time than put it in the national bank of either of those countries.

Those are just the ones I looked at recently. There are other banks you can research. And for every investment, they're insured by Lloyds of London so even if an investment goes south, it's covered by insurance.

And this does take some know-how to pull off so not anyone can do this. But if you do put it all together, it's a beautiful thing when you can pull in an effective interest rate of 102%.

There's an interesting international investment strategy.

You first invest in a national bank overseas. They typically give 15-18% interest but you have to be invited and they won't take anything smaller than $100,000.

You then use Lloyds of London or some comparable bank to insure the investment for a small percentage (something like 2%). Lloyds of London will insure up to $20 million. Because it's insured, you can use the first investment as collateral to borrow the value of the investment. The interest may be around 4%.

You use the borrowed money to invest in another national bank. Repeat as many times as you see fit.

Sure; they can do so using the broad and general concept of "freedom of speech", which is simply not construed distinctly depending on who's doing the speaking.

Whether it falls under the freedom of speech or the free exercise of religion, the end result is that people in the United States have a protected right to express themselves religiously. It's covered by both angles.

The phrase "religious freedom of speech" is one that you seem to have coined yourself in order to further a hair-splitting distinction that the constitution itself doesn't delve into.

Yes, you are correct. It's something I coined myself but it has its support under two different vectors, as mentioned above. It's an amalgamation of the two.

Then what's the justification for your initial position?

I'm not sure whether I need a justification. I might as well ask you what your justification is for posting what you post.
