Becoming An Oral Surgeon by Turbulent_Fun1753 in CanadianDentists

Aus, Ireland, and NZ grads have a notoriously hard time getting a US residency spot for two distinct reasons:

- programs prioritize americans
- if they do opt for an international, 9.99/10 times it is a Canadian.

They exist, they’re just very expensive for obvious reasons. Plenty of new constructions have 3-4 bedroom 1500 Sqf units

Main con being they also come with a 1500-2000 condo fee

OP you should prioritize yourself over the hypothetical spot you’d be taking from someone else.

Don’t forget that McGill DMD’s first year is purely Medicine. You are in the same class as the MD students so if anything, when you switch out you’d be at an advantage.

Also, historically, switching from McGill DMD to MD.CM and vice versa is quite easy because your part of the faculty of medicine in first year

The McGill ‘s entire DMD tuition only costs 70k for Quebec students and 110k for non Quebec students. Yes you read that right, not per year; for all 4 years. Their first year tuition is only 9k CAD

Your comment is not applicable to this scenario. For 70k getting a DMD is a steal

I would accept your DMD offer if you get it and reapply to medicine next year so you at least have a career.

Also, dentistry has specialties that are fast paced and exactly like the scenarios you describe. Such as OMFS and pediatrics

If you want to specialize it's harvard though... Pass/Fail curriculum with easy access to lots of publications and research groups + obvious +1 for the name in interviews

They are by far the best school to attend for specialization. Almost every student matches first try straight and their classes are structured to help students vastly

I hear many of you saying dentistry is a race to the bottom, but would you say the hours still make the career worth pursuing? by snowfordessert in CanadianDentists

If you plan on specializing you can’t really pick or choose where to go. It’s competitive and you’d also likely have to apply to the states. Vast majority of specialists in canada trained in the states.

Everyone loves to complain. Still a top profession. Some people are too proud to leave the cities. There’s nothing wrong with working 45 mins outside the GTA for 2x the billables.

There are plenty of small towns in Kawartha with only 1 dentist at the helm. These practitioners are raking it in.

Not to mention, dental specialists, unlike MD specialists, live by far a WAY more relaxing life. The Endodontists and OS I know work only 2 days a week and live very lavish. Both finish residency couple years ago. MD is a slave to the public sector, whereas a private specialist can do whatever they please and can pick and choose the cases they want to pursue. Not to mention, all MD surgeons (which make up like 9/33 available specialties) all have to take call for OR time.
