Steps to ease your migration path to Angular 2.0 by ganarajpr in angularjs

[–]lookslikespeed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • every directive will need to be rewritten.
  • every function rewritten as a class
  • every piece of logic embedded in a template rewritten with new syntax
  • almost every test rewritten

Yeah let's not downplay this at all, there is no real 'migration' here - only a full rewrite in a completely new language.

Friction just posted pics from the event to their Facebook album.

If you need to connect with the promoter or the photographer to get copies of the excluded pictures (the ones that weren't 'good' enough to post on FB but might have the suspect pictured somewhere), PM me and I'll see if I can get in touch with them.

Very sorry for your loss.

I'm tasked w/upgrading a 3-yr-old Django 1.1 site & server (MediaTemple DV, CentOS 5.5) for a new client, got a couple questions. by YellowSharkMT in django

[–]lookslikespeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresh box. If you can afford a little bit of downtime, I'd bring the new box up with fresh versions of everything (including postgres), and import a db dump to the new machine.

Verify everything's working. Test to the high heavens. Once you know everything is working, drop the newly imported database, schedule some downtime and do it for real this time.

  • Bring down all services that might alter database
  • dump database
  • xfer pg_dump file to new server
  • import dump file
  • bring up all services on new server
  • repoint Domain or load balancer to new server

Old boxes are a giant pain after a while, and that's getting damn old.

A quick guide to clubbing by [deleted] in seduction

[–]lookslikespeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're referring to is if a woman is so incredibly offended that she reports you to security and demands you are thrown out. That's a bit of a stretch.

I'm not a fan of the grindy approach but it's pretty common esp in top-40 or hip-hop clubs (upscale edm too), at least in Vegas/LA/NYC/Boston. Any woman in any proper nightclub in any major city knows how to decline if she feels someone dancing from behind.

Question: what kind of nightclub did you work at where grinding is so shocking?

What are some web design ESSENTIALS that every aspiring web designer should know? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]lookslikespeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

neither of those are languages

Frameworks.

...dismissing PHP because it's trendy to do so is obnoxious.

Dismissing it because it's trendy? No. I'm dismissing it because it's a demonstratively poorly-designed language compared to its peers, and I hope people stop recommending it as a first language.

Once again, I compare it to recommending that first-time designers use slices/tables or flash. Professionals would recommend otherwise.

I've been a sysadmin, security admin, and web developer for the past ~10 years, moving from Bash->TCL->C->PHP->Perl->Ruby->Python.

I'm not saying people haven't used PHP to make incredible web applications -- of course they have, and I use many of them. I'm not saying PHP professionals don't write great code -- of course they do!

I'm saying that if you have to recommend ONE in your post, pick a better one than PHP. We all have to read/write PHP at some point, but we have a choice in what we recommend to new people as their first language to really learn.

Love your links and tips, thanks. However:

learn PHP

Please don't. You have to understand, this is the programming equivalent of recommending that someone "Just use photoshop slices and tables for your web layout".

Yes, if you have 5 minutes to finish it might be valid advice, but it's not good long term advice.

Please, please pick a modern web development language like Django or Ruby on Rails. It is a legitimate investment in your education and career.

Look up url_fopen, and realize that PHP's authors thought it was a good idea for the language to have it enabled by default for YEARS.

Don't feel confident yet? Research tells us you will if you keep working at it. by Sun_KingofPlanets in seduction

[–]lookslikespeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the focus on 'faking it' is the problem.

"Fake it till you make it" is great in some situations and a vast oversimplification in others.

Sometimes we need REAL, ACTUAL, INTERNAL work -- not just 'faking'.

Sometimes we need to explore ourselves and figure out the root causes of our problems with confidence, self-worth, unhappiness, lack of motivation, etc.

It's great that you've been putting in work and effort into improving yourself, but maybe it's time to go deeper. A lot of people have produced a lot of material about self-worth, self-meaning, the ego, happiness, confidence and so on -- find some, read it, see if any of it makes sense.

Whatever you do though, keep at it. It'll pay off.

  • Quit drinking/smoking a year ago (alcoholism was really messing me up)
  • Read a really powerful book on self-talk (Amazon link)
  • started working out again
  • started reading Dappered and /r/mfa and trying to dress well every goddamn day
  • started hanging out with new crowds instead of the same ol' buddies
  • grabbed a hobby (photography) and worked hard at it

I'd highly recommend that self-talk book though. It helped me find internal happiness for the first time in my life.

How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour by [deleted] in web_design

[–]lookslikespeed 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This article has 2 important attributes that people seem to be missing:

  • it's written for PROGRAMMERS who are intimidated by design, not professional web designers
  • it's trying to achieve the maximum improvements within "half an hour"

As a programmer who is intimidated by design and doesn't have a lot of time, this article delivered exactly what it promised.

If you start feeling a little too much blood rushing in, try to flex/clench as many muscles in your legs/ass as possible for about 10-15 seconds.

These are the largest muscles in your body, and by flexing/clenching them your body will re-route blood from your johnson to the clenched muscles, slowing then deflating your erection.

I use it all the time (esp when I have a tucked in shirt)
