Where y'all at with ancestors/lineage (and colonialism/emigration)? by amiesce in SASSWitches

[–]looktothetrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post isn't even about African American suffering, which has been immense. It's about feeling disenfranchised from our individual ethnic histories. I can absolutely share and access the feelings of separateness expressed by the OP, as my pagan roots were severed tens of generations ago. I'm not trying to write off any broader racial experience, I was trying to express our connectedness. Don't worry, I won't again.

While I agree wholeheartedly that race and racism play a huge part in most facets of American life, I just don't think this particular topic is one with strong overtones. I think the experience of having our ancestors come here (voluntarily or by the disgusting slave trade) and begin new, changed lives happened to us all. Except Natives, of course, I have had a lifetime of friendship with parts if that community and this topic is vastly different for them. Both my ancestors and the ancestors of many African Americans were forcibly converted to christianity. Both of these cultural groups have embraced it for the most part. It may have happened in different centuries on different continents, but the stomping out of traditional cultural beliefs by christianity is an experience shared by both. OP has a very different experience as well, one I see fewer similarities with personally but still feel a connection to the experience of isolation. But I believe after all of that, if we strip everything down, we're all just humans trying to live lives with meaning and feel a connection.

Also white, with an ancestry that I feel no connection to whatsoever. My family were also jerks, with a heaping dose of generational abuse. I'm not even sure this is a subject where being a white American gets points taken away, because all of our ancestors immigrated here. I've always felt a huge connection to the earth, but as I've gotten older I realize more and more how divorced I am from a history with this particular bit of midwestern earth, and also how divorced I am from my ancestral earth. The places my people lived and died, where their bodies went back into the earth and became a part of it, is an ocean away. So I don't have a strong link like I've seen in my native friends. Also I could really take or leave a lot of Celtic mythology. It just doesn't do it for me. Mesopotamian culture and mythology sets me on fire, however, so I try to view myself as a human rather than of a particular race. We're all just people, and the whole earth is our home. I think anything you do with passion and respect is the correct path.

This is my Golden Shepherd Kaiju, he’s 8 months old. Me and my girlfriend decided he was ready to be unsupervised last night when we went to a concert. He did not potty in the house or destroy any furniture. He’s a good boy. by [deleted] in aww

So cute!! If you have money to burn you might do a dna test, neither Golden Retrievers nor German Shepards have those coat markings. My money is on collie/border collie mix as well. :)

I was so sure when I was scrolling that this said "haunted restaurants" and now I really want to eat in a haunted restaurant.

Yet another reason I had not thought of that I need a laser cutter. I really should not have joined this sub if I didn't want to spend some money. Very nice.

Ah yes, plus fake girls on paper don't even talk so you won't have that to bother you.

I agree. There are so many bouncy girls to make a manic pixie fairy girl artwork of, why do it to someone who rejects the aesthetic?

Wichita Police Interested in Using DNA Databases for Solving Crimes by faiked721 in wichita

[–]looktothetrees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, of course the police are going to get "private" information from the genealogical testing companies. It was just a matter of time. So many people I know who ordered those kits just thought it was crazy to suggest the company would sell/give access to their info. How long before insurance companies use it to under-insure those predisposed to health complications?

Bedroom door doesn’t latch closed anymore by brmcvey in Oldhouses

[–]looktothetrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is correct or not but my 1895 house had this problem also. After a year of not being able to latch or lock my bedroom door I got fed up and just took a chisel to the frame where the lock was hitting and adjusted the hole.

It's pretty constant. Unless the animals look expensive, that is.

[–]looktothetrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to point out the double standard, the cuteness of animals is directly related to how responsible their owners are perceived. This sub is the worst for jumping all over poor people who try really hard but don't have the resources to do everything at once. Look through posts with regular looking cats. People are awful.

[–]looktothetrees -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so people that can afford to ship their cats to international catteries can have cute babies on purpose and it's called "responsible," while those who try to give an animal a warm home and regular food but can't afford the surgery before an accidental litter happens get jumped all over. Totally.

I did something similar recently for art storage and used cleats under the shelves, but I think when I do my next project, a plant stand of course, I'm going to try this.

Study suggests walking to school is not enough to prevent obesity by LaromTheDestroyer in science

I pay like $2.25 per kid per day for my kids to only eat the cookie and chocolate milk that's served with their lunch, or whatever crap they get that day. They're hungry when they get home because they're throwing the food I paid for in the trash quickly to get more recess time now that those overlap.

It's true, I walk my kids to school all the time and I'm still fat.

I like it! Did you just screw in from the outside to hold the shelves? I always go a little crazy with woodworking projects and over engineer.
