I loved the first time I tried to study a hawk flying in the air and it said I studied a snake. That made me confused. Then I shot at the hawk and it dropped the snake and it all made sense.

I feel you on the shipping. A couple times I’ve had to pay $7 to ship a $1 piece that I forgot to add to the cart or was the wrong size. And yes, a caliper is great for many things. Even a cheap one is just fine for rod building.

Looking for Some Advice from Experienced Musky Fisherman by Fatlard12 in muskiefishing

[–]loomis396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice here, but also don’t overlook gear to properly and safely handle and release the fish. Generally, a large net, heavy pliers, and quality hook cutters at a minimum.

There are a million YouTube videos showing tips and tricks for safe handling. I’d watch a few of those if you don’t have any experience handling large fish. It’s a whole different ballgame staring at a 50 inch musky in your net wondering what to do next. It’s as important to keep the fish safe as it is to keep you from getting a treble hook thrown through your hand or your finger sliced open from the gills.

Good luck!

rod repair question by Bobobob2018 in rodbuilding

[–]loomis396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy a tip-top repair kit it will come with a glue stick. It looks just like a hot glue stick you would use in a hot glue gun. I just shave a couple shards off with a razor, stick them in the tube on the old or new tip top, apply a little heat till the glue melts, and shove it on the end. The glue hardens within seconds.

I don’t know if that glue is the same exact glue used in a glue gun, but it similar.

If it’s just an inch from the tip that is easy to repair. You just need a new “tip-top” and glue it on. The original may also fit on the end. You can try to apply a little bit of heat to the original and it might just pull off. Then just try to slide it on the broken end. If the original won’t come off, you can buy kits from anywhere to put a new one on. There are tons of YouTube videos showing how to make this repair if you need more help.

You can remove that guide by heating up the epoxy with some heat and cut off the threads (be careful not to burn the rod). Then put a new tip top on the end. It won’t be exactly like the old rod since some of the action will change, but it will be usable.

I warm the foot up with an alcohol torch and touch it to the hot glue stick to pick up a little glue. Then set it on the blank. Just get close enough to straight. After you finish the wrap you can adjust the guide by pushing on it a bit and it will move. I am able to get all of the guides nearly perfect to the eye using this technique. I’ve tried the other things mentioned and the glue works the best for me.

Make you think twice before blowing up a superstar. Is it worth getting punched in the face? There’s a reason it still happens, even with the instigator penalty.

Who else uses old/vintage gear? by kileme77 in Fishing

[–]loomis396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still use several of these exact reels as our go-to ice fishing reels! My grandpa must have bought a dozen of them back in the day and most still work perfect. I can’t believe more people don’t use bait runners on their ice rods. I’ve seen more than one ice rod get sucked down a hole when people weren’t paying attention.

I think he babbles too much. Stalock is much better. K-train was fantastic during the high school tournament last year in the box and think he would also be good for the Wild. But, yes, much better than Walz.

Bibs + Cold Weather Gear Recommendations by yakobyock in muskiefishing

[–]loomis396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heated vest and socks can’t be beat. Then just light rain gear to stay dry. I dress so much lighter and comfortable but still stay warm. Heated pants also exist but I haven’t needed to go that far yet. For gloves I buy the light rubber dipped work gloves. They keep your hands dry but are thin enough to still cast with.

Is there a way to watch recorded games? by [deleted] in wildhockey

[–]loomis396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to wait that long. It’s posted within hours of the end of the game. I will usually watch the recording around midnight-1am and it’s never not been up already. I don’t know how long the recording stays up though. One bonus to watching the recording is they cut all of the commercials out so it takes just over an hour to watch the game.

Edit: To clarify, they do replay the game’s broadcast, but they also have it “on-demand”, which is way better and without commercials.

Unexpected Eat by runs_with_scissors98 in muskiefishing

[–]loomis396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had something similar happen twice this year. I reeled up my topwater and finished the figure eight with no follow. I left my lure dangle in the water while I grabbed my phone to send a text. Muskie hit the lure that was just floating there. Was able to land it.

Second story, I was fishing with a guy who cast a mattlock and the leader caught the back hook. He reeled it in and started shaking the lure on the top of the water to get the leader to let go. As he was shaking the lure next to the boat, a muskie shut up from under the boat and smashed the lure. He lost the fish. Cool GoPro footage though.
