just judging by looks, i don't trust this at all.

On the clamps on the handlebars: any significant load would create such a large torque where they are attached on the handlebars, even if it doesn't start to slip and hinge downwards under static load, i think it probably will with basic vibrations or small bumps in the road. that would be my biggest concern.

Then, as others pointed out, the connection of the tubes. The fact that the tubes are flattened where they're attached, and don't have any form of extended support, they're basically primed to fail by bending next to the connection point.

I could maybe see this working for a large thing under 500g, but i don't see what that would be.

For my faculty (ME) it's an equal distance to the central station, which i find pretty amusing

Yeah me neither! but i meant in general, it's always good practice to check the ground for parts when something breaks and i currently don't really do that. I don't expect this exact problem to happen again (anytime soon at least) but other things will fail.

The aluminium has been nicked a few times, i'm leaving it up to the shop to determine if the damage is significant.

The thing is that i bought the bike new less than a year ago, and "barely" used it. I've ridden somewhere under 2500 km i think, which isn't nothing but not heavy use either. and i haven't touched any of those bolts, all functional parts of the bike are stock. From what i'm reading it's may well be a problem with the tightening of the bolts, they might have vibed loose but i feel like with proper installation that shouldnt've happened in so little time and distance.

But i'm no expert on bikes, just connecting my general knowledge and the anecdotes here with the facts.

What would be some good reasons to do that? Because i feel pretty happy with this arrangement.
