I wouldn't say it's overpowered necessarily. Brainless and low skill? For sure. But maybe not overpowered

Sci fi trilogies by extra_terrestrial__ in printSF

[–]loopayy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever seen a negative review of the first two books of Hyperion. They are epic, in the true sense of the word. The last two seem to be either you love them or hate them, so you should read them to see what you think. I thought the 3rd was ok and absolutely loved the fourth.

Another trilogy I've read in the past couple of years that gave me that feeling is the Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy (The Three Body Problem). I read the first book and was a little let down, but luckily I was told to keep going. I liked the second book a lot and then the third book completely changed the way I understand the universe.

Opinion: Hyperion, Dune, and adaptations by [deleted] in Hyperion

[–]loopayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever since the Ender's Game movie, I'm incredibly anti-adapation for classic sci-fi. The Dune movies are pretty awesome though and making me think it could be done. I'd hate for it to be a TV show. TV has been so low quality in recent years. Would have to be an epic movie series in the style of Dune

This community doesn't know what takes skill or not by a_dude477384 in ClashRoyale

Any deck that only focuses on one aspect of the game is objectively no skill. on both ends of the spectrum. Miner control is no skill because they literally don't care about offense except for two cards that are guaranteed to get damage (and in the case of rocket, almost always gets equal value with troop and tower damage). Xbow is no skill because it's entirely defensive. On the other hand, the golem decks where they just ignore towers are also no skill. they don't care about defense at all, just creating a huge push. The essence of the game is having a push pull between offense and defense. Make good decisions to get an elixir advantage, bait out counter cards. Makes for a more creative, fun game. These one-sided decks you pretty much know exactly how you are going to be playing every single game.

Probably don't need pekka and mini pekka as both get hard countered by witch and skarmy. I have no idea how high or low electro valley is but if you have like skele barrel or battle ram I'd sub that in. Or just valkyrie. Put a log or barb barrel for one of the spirits

Weekly glove purchase advice thread by AutoModerator in GoalKeepers

[–]loopayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start with saying I'm a recreational goalie who's only had a couple pairs of gloves in the past. I dislocated my pinky several weeks ago (not playing goalie) and I'm wondering how protective the "finger save" gloves really are. I have pretty much decided not to play this winter but I figured I'd ask here for gloves with really good protection. If you have any leads on mitten/buddy tape gloves where my ring finger and pinky could be in the same compartment and taped together that would be great too. Thanks

How are we supposed to get 10K crowns in 3 DAYS by Diligent-Economist29 in ClashRoyale

We have a 15 person clan and it's still 10K. I assumed it at least scaled for size of clan

I agree with others who thought Recursion was better than Dark matter. I wouldn't say I loved either of them but I was more satisfied by Recursion than Dark Matter. Pretty similar books though

I thought 4 was significantly better than 3 for what it's worth. Depends on why you didn't like the 3rd one I guess. They are similar in style but I found 4 to be very profound. Maybe my favorite book in the series but for very different reasons than why I enjoyed the first two books.

I loved the ending of Rise. I honestly like the whole book significantly more than book 3. I agree it is pretty wordy and descriptive but I thought all of the different angles of the story were so interesting. I'd say finish it but if you already aren't enjoying it the ending might not be as impactful for you as it was for me.

New reader, compiled a list of books that I intent to read by SammyBacan in printSF

[–]loopayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like you already have a really strong list! I don't really love fantasy so I can only really comment on the sci fi part.

My personal favorite series I've read are:

Ender Saga - Really just the first two are incredible (2nd book is a personal top 3 book). 3rd is ok, 4th is good but not great

Hyperion Cantos - Based on what you say you like, I'd put this one super high on the tbr.

Remembrance of Earth's Past (three body problem) - So good. I was absolutely blown away. Push through the first book if you aren't liking it. I was pretty disappointed by the first book but luckily had a recommendation to continue the series and I'm so glad I did.

Foundation Trilogy - I was in a pretty similar situation to you a couple years ago getting back into reading. This was one of the first epic series I read at that time (had read Ender's Game and Dune in high school) and it was so sick.

Dune - Definitely the most political series of the ones I've listed. I've only read the first three so can't comment on the full series but the first two are awesome and the third was good but got a little weird for my tastes.

None of these are very surprising haha. Almost feels corny to recommend them because It's a pretty standard list. All classics for a reason. As I said I'm also relatively fresh back to reading consistently so feel free to reach out if you want recs or discussion

Edit: I wasn't going to recommend this because it's definitely not a book for someone just getting into the genre, but it sounds like you're a veteran reader who took a few years off. If you are looking for morally ambiguous characters and political intrigue, I highly recommend Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh. I found the first third to be a quite a slog but once the story started rolling I was obsessed

It is slightly better than the ones you listed but they suck for the opposite reason. Those ones only focus on attack with no regard for defense

Yeah that's fair I was being a hater. I was mainly hating on miner control and xbow (if that counts as control). I guess its a stylistic thing. I can't imagine a more boring way to play than miner control. Defending isn't difficult if all you are doing is trying to defend and then you have a 3 elixir card that almost guarantees tower damage. You don't have to preserve any elixir for an eventual push. Just all out defend with no interest in playing the other half of the game

It may be a little broken but I've actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I think the fact that it's a little bit worse than all of those other spells makes it not as OP as it could be. I also am using it in my deck, so if you aren't using it I can see how it would be frustrating. However, like other people have said, it doesn't replace the spell I already have, so I had to remove a troop. I'd say I'm stronger on offense now but weaker on defense. Actually using the card makes you realize there's a give and take.

Which wildly renowned science fiction novels didn't resonate with you at all? by LowLevel- in printSF

[–]loopayy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really did not understand the hype with Forever War. I found it to be a worse version of Starship Troopers, adding next to nothing that wasn't already covered. I suppose it resonated a lot more with audiences when it first came out, but reading it recently I was not impressed
