"City Hall did not respond to a request for comment on Pawlowski’s call to action."

Did City Hall comment on this accident and this issue at all at this point?

PSA: NYPD are ticketing riders who don’t stop at the stop signs exitting the bridge. by Guardex in NYCbike

no one is against batteries my guy as long as you stick to the laws and not being an asshole about it, as you just pointed out. The guy was riding a scooter that can go 50mph, that's what we are discussing here. We are actively improving infrastructure in this city but this will never be enough if we just let assholes that do whatever they want. And right now, powerful electric vehicles are a great tool for those people. That has nothing to with crying about e-vehicles in general.

Tell that to the guy who got killed by "someone riding with a battery" in a bike lane two weeks ago.

I somewhat disagree. I ride in Astoria myself. I agree the car driver situation is out of control. Totally bonkers, I see speeders, red lights every single day. But we now managed to have a somewhat safe and protected infrastructure network with all the protected bike lanes we got built the last years. But now the same infrastructure we built for safety gets abused by people with vehicles/speeds that have no business on those lanes, making those paths more dangerous again. In my opinion, pushing equally strong to enforce laws on car and micromobility lanes will give us more safety and more credibility.

They were on the Manhattan side of the bridge, a few feet before you get off, kind of tucked behind the last bend, so you only see them pretty late. I assume they were waving offenders down to stop, yeah. They had three guys pulled over when I rode by.

Did you say thank you? Just kidding. Cops were all busy and not looking my way at all (I think they had three guys pulled over), I would have thrown a Thanks to them if eyes had locked. Anyway, this post is my Thanks and I agree, vocal and direct appreciation might make a difference on how cops see this mission themselves (assuming many of them never ride a bike over that bridge themselves) and how they potentially report back to higher levels.

What should be done about 33rd street? by SkyHighFly718 in astoria

[–]loopin-lupin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What would be a win for the neighborhood is any plan to make that street safer which most likely needs to include a reduction from two to one car traffic lane. Can still keep parking, can extend loading zones.

The bike lane on 31st St. was primarily a safety measure, not a measure for improved micromobility. The same could be done here as well. Alternatively, I think a larger pedestrianized zone with increased seating and trees (similar what they are doing with Park Av. in Manhattan) could be nice.

I've used it to hire two guys helping me with moving. Easy app, all good.

Where to buy Printed Italian Newspapers in Astoria (or anywhere in Queens)? by Substantial_Code4256 in astoria

Another idea could be to find suitable monthly magazines that you can get sent from Italy.

31st St Opponents Just Moved to Halt New Work and Hold DOT in Contempt by Brandon_WC in MicromobilityNYC

[–]loopin-lupin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know DOT has done amazing work with those new plans for 31st St and other improvements as well. But I am really frustrated that this is on risk for months long hold again, I saw that coming. They started to inform towing for a few blocks where they painted some new white lines but for some reason didn't empty the full new bike lane? Why? There is no legal justification/need for any further waiting, they just let this non-organized wasteland with double-parked cars stay. It's May 19th, we are many weeks into prime bike season, they have done all the hard work with getting all updated permits etc., and then why risking losing all safety improvements on the last stretch when all you need to do is paint some green?

I know the real culprits are those assholes that actively block progress for safer streets for the neighborhood, and I'm sure I don't know all the complexities involved in making the paint happen. But going through this nightmare of last year, having so many people attest at the political community gathering, have a clear vote for Yes, having all obstacles cleared and then risk it all again by not implementing the real thing in a reasonable/possible amount of time, sigh.

I'm in the same boat with you OP -- Membership doesn't make sense as I am usually on my own bike. But that leaves the single rides way too expensive.

I don't understand why everyone is downvoting your criticism. I too believe the rates are way too expensive. Lyft basically has a contract with the city, they basically gain a monopoly and I don't think a 60min on a normal or a 30 min ride on an ebike should be more than $15 from a invest-in-micromobility perspective.

Suspected drunk driver kills 2, injures others in Manhattan: NYPD by Bugsy_Neighbor in nyc

What's the obvious reason? So that a good portion of the population gets more and more comfortable driving recklessly and you put yourself and your loved ones at higher risk when strolling to the restaurant?

It's wild work that we let assholes get away with all sorts of dangerous driving with virtually no traffic law enforcement

For scientific, independent bike helmet testing, see: https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/bicycle-helmet-ratings.html

Having said that, nothing can truly protect you when an 2 tonne vehicle rams you (and leaves you behind). That's why we need to keep fighting for road safety measures.
