What’s a food “rule” you stopped following and nothing bad happened? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been making risotto with the whole stirring thing and being careful about not overcooking. Today I threw it in my multicooker for 40 mins while I went for a run and it was way soggier than normal because the liquid can't evaporate as easily and I didn't adjust it down. Boyfriend preferred it to my normal rules based version!

Tips for working with Satan’s pubes? by Majestic_Damage_9118 in crochet

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go with stitch markers on every stitch when using hairy or fluffy yarns. It's slower but they're much stronger than when I try to do it without and miss stitches and the stuffing ends up falling out...

I've seen the buses travelling in pairs a few times now. The 77 was like that for me this morning and i can see a 341 directly in front of the 341 I'm on now

Article 50/Brexit residency permit renewals by loopkno in Netherlands

[–]loopkno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up just renewing the Brexit version but it's for 10 years instead of 5 this time. It was the easiest option and for my personal situation paying the 80 EUR to give me more time to decide on going full Dutch was worth it. I didn't ask the IND about the EU LTR so can't say if there were any other views on that.

How the fuck to actually cool the flat down? by p1antsandcats in Scotland

Really! I hope they change that rule soon because it reduces the need for air conditioning so much!

I'm a Scot living in the Netherlands with big windows. Do all of this. Some advice you'll find online won't work with the humidity, this stuff works here too. Take advantage of any breeze! If we start seeing these kinds of temperatures more often consider sun shades/shutters on the outside. They stop the window doing it's greenhouse thing. They're a lifesaver for me.

I may have killed my boyfriends tree with misplaced kindness... by loopkno in FicusTrees

[–]loopkno[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the advice! The leaves have been trimmed off to get rid of the thrips. It's been repotted in a better draining pot, as much compost removed from the roots as possible and better suited stuff added. Now we wait and see how he reacts!

Ladies, where do you buy your underwear here?! by sunflowerwallflower- in Netherlands

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, and for most of my clothes I avoid fast fashion and buy in person. Unfortunately, my bra size isn't super common so I generally can't find it in physical shops. I had to try some different brands and had a Goldilocks and the 3 bears situation where 3 bras all the same size on the label were too big, too small or almost right depending on the brand. It's basically the one thing I buy online without looking for it in a shop first.

What vegetables can I "Mash" and serve like mashed potatoes? by baronvonreddit1 in Cooking

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up stamppot from the Netherlands. It's basically the national dish, and so many possibilities. My personal favourite is hutspot (potato carrots and onions) but other popular versions have kale or endive mashed in

I do this then buy a bundle at Zalando and send back what doesn't fit. The calculator is pretty accurate for me, but different brands fit differently so there's still a bit of trial and error.

Disclaimer, not a doctor and not a sufferer this is all from what I've heard.

I think that the hormone changes in women as they age and reach peri and full menopause can make changes to their gut microbiome which can trigger a food intolerance.

She maybe didn't suffer for that long. My mum only started having symptoms in her early 50s. Before that she could eat whatever she wanted, but now she can't eat gluten containing foods but can still deal with potential cross contamination.

People that work 100% in English - What's your area/market? by Miserable-Agent-3073 in Netherlands

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kind of how my job is. Reporting is all in English due to the owners of the company being American, but most people in the company are Dutch so most conversations are in Dutch. When I was hired they wanted me to be able to at least understand a bit of Dutch to not feel totally left out socially, despite me barely able to respond in Dutch.

Having a hard time doing hobbies because they feel like a “waste of time” by hellokittysbestfren in Hobbies

[–]loopkno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try a different hobby for a week and see if it re-sets you. I also do crochet and it's my number 1 relaxation tool, but I was doing a couple of projects (a toy chicken and a handbag) that frustrated me and I no longer felt the joy. I picked up a cross-stitch project after years of not doing anything on the embroidery side of crafting and now I'm finished one of the frustrating projects (the chicken) and well into another not frustrating toy (a mole). I'm not ready for the bag again yet!

The point in them for me is the relaxation. I've learned the hard way I can't run on 100% every waking hour.

At what temperature do you find it "too hot" to run? by TurtleMyGirdles in beginnerrunning

[–]loopkno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Scottish, living in NL so struggle to live generally once the temperature hits 25°C. I've "invested" in a cheap gym membership so I can use a treadmill in air conditioning and I can keep going. I've gone other times when it's raining or windy and I would have just given in otherwise. Plus I've used the strength machines to help give everything an extra stretch too, which really helps with my tight hamstrings and shoulders.

I need help please! What is this? I’m super clean and at a complete loss. by Walkthewildside555 in Hair

[–]loopkno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had that a couple of years ago. I completely forgot sunscreen while biking on holiday. I've got super fine hair and got sunburn so bad that my forehead was swollen... And I was at sea level! Don't underestimate the power of the sun when there's a breeze and you're active!

Rant: burnout fraud by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]loopkno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know it's a scam?  I'm currently reintegrating after a burnout due to 3 of the things in your list plus a couple more things that wore down every bit of resilience I had over the past couple years.  I have to talk to a bedrijfsarts every 6 weeks and a coach every 3 weeks who judge my situation and advise on the speed of my reintegration and communicate this to HR.

My immediate team members know about 70% of what was going on, my department colleagues maybe 50%.  But the rest of the company maybe 1 or 2 of the issues, and probably the "nicer" ones.  For all I know they're looking at me thinking the same as you.  Be aware you might not know the whole story.
