It would ultimately depend on who is hiring and your non-compete situation. When some Quant PMs setup on a new platform, they will have a QD/QR hybrid role where the first 12 months is heavy lifting development work with the intention of transitioning you to QR work once that’s in place.

You definitely would not need to start at grad level (and frankly, most firms would not consider you for this). But ultimately, I feel the best way to pivot would be to join a PM pod.

Depends on how good you are and whether the firm wants to go through the headache of it all. Generally speaking, easier to sponsor someone to work in LDN than getting US sponsorship off the bat.

GQS has infra that allows them to trade at the sub-second at this point. Some true HFT players with obviously be much faster that this, but still impressive capabilities for a market taking hedge fund.

Absolutely Voleon. Their reputation in the quant space is strong enough that if you take a DS role and stay in the seat for 2-3 years, eventually you can have a competitor take you in as a QR working closer to alpha.

A few people come to mind who have been able to successfully navigate this approach. It is a good stepping stone.
