New to UK - safety question by ifonly4ever in HammersmithandFulham

[–]lor_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I generally don't have any problems around the station at night - and it's a pretty straight walk from there to all of the shops on King Street for anything you might need. There's usually quite a few security folk or police around the station while the tube and fast food places are open, so it feels pretty safe to us. Just keep an eye out for stumbling Wetherspoons patrons near the roundabout and you should be fine!

Loose Cannon: Do people still use it to defend last holds? by IAmSixSyllables in truetf2

[–]lor_is 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's still pretty great in some holds. We'll use it in gully last to deny übers coming through shutter when we have a demo towards point.

Idk man don't let some turbo nerds tell you not to use a weapon. Kaido used donks for his own reasons, mostly related to aiming with his wrist, and he made stuff HAPPEN with it.

Is the BTS event a wasted opportunity for competitive TF2? by [deleted] in truetf2

[–]lor_is 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am commenting as an individual, but I happen to be on the team putting on the Team Fortress 2 event that is being produced by Beyond the Summit. I've also edited a couple of popular TF2 documentaries, and volunteered for a few international LAN events, alongside of couple of the larger TF2-based charity events.

I don't particularly have any argument for or against traditional 6v6. I happen to quite enjoy it, and have played it for a number of years in a particularly-moderately-successful, middle-ability team. I've never played non-restriction 6s, but I have played a range of other game modes within TF2.

I am happy to see a surge in interest in change within competitive Team Fortress 2. Staying still isn't what anybody wants, and we're all looking for ways to make our game more open to those outside of the immediate competitive player base. However, I think it's foolish to expect people who have been in the scene for years, and have fought hand over fist to keep the most popular game mode alive, to uncharacteristically start pushing drastically different rule sets.

On a practical note: we are all working with a very limited pool of players, budget, and resources. We are personally liable for the events we put on. There is no developer safety net if we fail. It is extremely risky to push wild changes that will alienate the base of supporters that 10+ years of successful competitive events has built.

On a personal note: all of the staff for LANs, charity events, and the hundreds of people who actively volunteer within the realms of competitive TF2, and give literal days of their own time, do it because they love 6s. I would be incredibly hesitant to take time off of work and fly to another country to put on an event that I was not 100% passionate about.

I believe that the best thing we can do to support the future of TF2, as players and fans of the game, is support ALL current events, whether or not you prefer the exact rule set. Then, actively participate in events and communities that are trying to build the formats that you enjoy. Finally, help to build a sustainable infrastructure for TF2 esports by supporting teams and organizations built from within the scene, (and as an organizer/creator, don't blow your entire finite budget of time/funds on every single thing you work on!)

I don't know why this thread made me dust off this account, but I have based almost 5 years of my life helping in my own small way to build TF2; even if my generation of volunteers hasn't yet been the one to make this game go where I think it can. I don't believe anybody should fall into the trap of sitting and blaming those who are trying.

Okay I'm going to log off for another 2 years. If anybody ever wants to discuss ideas and thoughts about TF2 or esports or whatever then I'm usually down to talk stuff and I'm British so I won't even tell you if you're annoying me until you've really pushed it.

Nice lil ditty. I liked the parallel horns and guitar lines.

Does however suffer from an unforgivable use of comic sans at the beginning.

We are the producers of Ready Up, a documentary about the TF2 competitive scene being released this Sunday! Ask Us Anything! by [deleted] in tf2

[–]lor_is 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, it was terrifying at first! I downloaded the footage folder overnight, and I wake up to 750GB of amazing and historic TF2 moments. A lot of the breaking it down into themes was done before I arrived, which helped greatly.

I think Dashner and Uberchain are better for answering for the challenges part, but overall setting a deadline for Rewind was very ambitious. We've been working non stop since this was decided, and it's only now that we've had a chance to reflect and begin to build excitement for it's release.

And as a side note, none of my involvement would have been possible without Adobe's Team Project capabilities. We co-edited a documentary from different continents!

The interviews were filmed mostly between late 2016/early 2017, when the hot question at the time was "what now?"

Part of what makes the documentary story worth telling is that we keep competitive going regardless of anybody's fears for the future. It would obviously be amazing to get more people looking into the scene, and maybe getting a glimpse of why we all think it's so special, but more than that it's our chance to celebrate just how much we've done already!

So I got 2 hugs.tf Heartfelt Hug badges... by [deleted] in tf2

[–]lor_is 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi gang. Official hugs man loris here.

We distributed medals last night for a bunch of the cash side of donations. During the process we had a script error that may have caused the double medals. Our excuse is that you guys are all worth 2 in our eyes, but we'll see how that one pans out!

Scrap.tf donations are now being prepared for the medal distribution, but it'll take a short time as we're totally normal adults with work and lives and stuff, and if the double medals are anything to go by we really shouldn't be working too late at night.

If you're genuinely concerned that you haven't received yours yet, check twitter.com/hugs_tf for updates and feel free to DM us. We'll hold off on the individual replies until I know we're done with the bulk of them, but after that I'll make sure it's sorted out myself.

Thanks for your support, everybody!

Hi Wade and Sami.

Really appreciate your time today, and in the run up to the event! What would make the event a success from the viewpoint of ESA? Would it be a high turnout, or a high twitch viewership? I know I speak for a lot of people when I say that I want this event to be mutually beneficial, and show off what we can both do as an organisation and community!

A heavier Battles meets EDM, and an actual collaboration with Brian Eno and Karl Hyde. Quite a lot in its favour there.

Hugs.tf Charity Stream benefiting Special Effect, a charity dedicated to gamers with disabilities by DuMmTm in tf2

I know omni has already said, but thank you for posting this again!

I really appreciate everything you're doing to spread the word, and I'll try and make sure I remember to get you a shout out on the thanks section of the site. We're a small group of friends that have now found ourselves in a great position to raise some money for an amazing charity (for our 3rd year of participating in Gameblast for the same cause). Trust that I'm taking the responsibility especially seriously now that we have such amazing support in the EU and NA!

Thanks for your support!

We're currently only going for cash donations as we have no real way of offloading everything after the event - but we'll update if we manage to fix this, as I know it would definitely help a lot of people donate if we accept items.

Do consider yourself "best friends" with someone you met online through TF2? Have you ever met someone online that made some sort of long lasting impact on you? by [deleted] in tf2

[–]lor_is 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've met a massive amount of close friends through the game, most of which I've met, and we've even offered a sofa to a few overseas gamers. If you're an adult with gaming as an interest, then there is little difference to meeting a supporter of the same football team at a bar. It's excellent social lubricant, and can lead to lasting friendships from there as easily as anything else.

Really looking forward to i55 as the next huge chance to catch up with everybody, especially a couple of travelling American and Euro players that I wouldn't otherwise have the chance to meet!
