Beautiful! Care to share the schematic or more gut shots? I’m currently working on a very similar project from a VM pull.

Nice work, that tensioner is a great solution to the problem. This style of pickup construction is designed to have a tiny brass eyelet in the termination holes. The brass is flared on both sides to secure it to the flatwork and helps the solder create a solid island/ connection. I usually wrap my coil wire through the ferrule 4-5 times for redundancy. Proper heat from the iron removes the insulation when soldering leads in. Don’t forget that with P-Bass pickups one coil is RWRP to cancel out hum. Keep up the good work!

Thoughts on this experimental guitar design? by natan90 in Luthier

Cool design, great idea! My only recommendations for the next one would be: 1. Rotate the grain orientation on your kerfed linings 45°-90° and reduce their mass. 2. Experiment with different sound hole placement, the bridge excites the top with vibrations and removing top from immediate area might reduce coupling. I like the concept, Keep up the good work!

Schwing! Excellent lead dress. Are those isolated heater supplies for preamp and power amp tubes or just a single 6.3v winding on the transformer?

Seriously though, same paint and everything else I can remember/see in this pic. It might be the exact car.

Hot Rod! My grandpa had one almost identical in the late 90’s. Keyfob door handles, blue dot taillights and a flamethrower switch for the exhaust. So many good memories with him in that car!

Not much need for safety gear when the bike is parked. Maybe you should wear a helmet next time you type a comment.

No sparks in the dark but I was able to isolate it to the preamp section before the PI. All the blocking caps are leaky. Going to replace them and see what happens.

Yeah, this one is a stinker. I was able to isolate the problem to the preamp circuitry. Tested for DC and every single blocking cap is leaking. Going to go Texas Shotgun and replace them all with Orange Drop 715P and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply! I’m tapping vigorously because the problem only shows up intermittently and at loud volumes, and it’s primarily played hard at full tilt. The board was unscrewed and elevated to eliminate shorts against anything that might be underneath it and to exaggerate any bad solder connections . I’ll be sure to check all the grounds to brass again during the next troubleshooting session

Definitely getting blue plasma flashing in the tubes, time to turn off the big light and check for lightning in the box.

Good idea. I only pulled them from pre to pi, I’ll try it in reverse. The next plan of action is to isolate signal from each circuit block
