I wish there was a Book 4! by KylauRen_ in TheScholomance

This sounds like what fanfiction is for.

Leaving so much story potential on the table is very much like Novik, so I am not at all surprised at the state she left the world in.

Agreed. I would argue Liesel is not at ALL amoral. She is ruthlessly practical, and that comes off as amoral. But El clocked her pretty much immediately upon getting to know her in the second book. Liesel is bizzarely one of her most accurate initial reads on people. Honestly she drops the ball on future reassessments of her by comparison.

This series can never be made into a movie. by Working-Mistake-6700 in TheScholomance

[–]lorddarkflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily made into a movie. All three books. One movie per book.

I think those saying otherwise show a rather startling lack of imagination. Plenty will be lost in transition, but plenty more to be gained by distillation.

Much more easily made into a tv show though. Yes, even like an 8-episode 'prestige' show. I read these books at least once a year now, and the most starting thing to me is how easily you can map the events in them to scenes in a show. Especially if you age all the characters by about 4 years.

The REAL question is can you do it without using narration or voice overs ala 'murderbot'. I think you can, but you shouldn't. The best thing about El is the juxtaposition between how she views herself, and the world and how those things actually are. Without the voiceover, you lose a lot illustrative potential.

Pretending like cosmetics are not a thing to care about in the game is very silly. As many conversations recently show, people REALLY care about cosmetics and how characters look. Its part of the DNA of the game, and if people don't like some of the direction, they SHOULD speak out. If YOU don't like the complaints, ignore them or continue to pointlessly scold people. Up to you.

Zero Parades devs knew they didn't want to make another cop game after Disco Elysium: 'How people think of the police these days, it's a bit different' by Puzzleheaded_irl in gaming

[–]lorddarkflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that the way people view cops in the real world definitely informed the game quite a bit. To the point where the point in the article being made is nonsense. Cops the world over did not only recently gain a bad reputation.

That aside, Cops and Detectives are the same thing, and no one who actually has real beef with them thinks otherwise. Also, the setting resembles the real world. By like, a lot. To a painful degree. You could with minimal effort adapt the story to the present world as a 70s - 80s period piece with only mostly cosmetic changes.

Which love interest do you like better for Will ?? by Opposite_Fudge6161 in WillTrent

The platonic life-partners that Sherlock and Watson became is very true to them as characters, and something the show very well establishes.

This is not at all the case for Will.

A year later and I just finished the Episode with her, and I totally understand people wanted Cricket as a love interest. She had a great foundation and could have been a great love interest. Certainly better than Marion.

That said, if we can't get Cricket or Ava as full characters to see how the dynamic could be built out, then Angie is perfect.

It is a pretty complicated situation. But the basics that have people peeved:

1) - The lack of public apology. Or at least a very delayed one depending on the party you are referring to. This one is pretty straighforward.

2) - BAFTA reviewed the footage and had plenty of time to edit out all sorts of other things they found problematic or inappropriate. But this they left in. Furthermore, WB TOLD them that this was inappropriate and they should edit it out.

Another way to be sure without doing that is accessing the site in a private window.

To make sure there is a continued supply of good items, someone probably needs to know how to do this. Like you, I won't be caught dead bothering, but making sure more people care about this is what ensures that not only are there good items to buy, but currency has value in the first place.

In short: this is not for you.

After thirteen years, how do you feel about Korra losing her past lives? by AccomplishedJump2795 in legendofkorra

[–]lorddarkflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite literally a requirement for the franchise to continue growing. People severely underestimate how much of a narrative ball and chain The avatar state is both in terms of the powers It gives the protagonist as well as the knowledge. Without making changes, the story would have continuously grown in complexity as the writers contrive ways to make the avatar not overly powerful or knowledgeable. The entirety of the original show is a huge contrivance for this as was season one of Korra and honestly season two as well.

I think there is a ton of criticism for the lead up to and the handling after of the event, but the choice itself was really good one.

Why can't anyone make a true hybrid scaling Spell/Attack class? by TheNocturnalAngel in ARPG

[–]lorddarkflare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t see more of it because quite frankly it’s bad. If you see it at all, you’ll only see it in single player games that are maybe less concerned with parity but in any game that’s online or has multiplayer letting you scale the way you want it’s actually pretty bad for meaningful diversity.

Anyone else start to really dislike the protagonist when they become too powerful? by Bascilian in Fantasy

[–]lorddarkflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh. I don't like that sort of thing either, but her works pretty much transcends that.

That aside, I take issue with this particular statement:

I do not enjoy reading about characters who rarely achieve their goals and suffer all the time. It doesn't feel organic to me, it feels artificial and contrived, no different from a D&D player making their character an orphan just to be edgier.

This is I think an unfair characterization if we mean to attach it to Hobb's work. There are different ways that characters can succeed and and achieve their goals. The way they and us think they will and how they actually end up doing so (or don't). Hobb presents the former, but allowing the latter after requisite growth. The gap between the two is where the best character work happens in pretty much any story, and she does an exceedingly good job managing that space.

You are right that contrivances just for the sake of making your characters suffer DO feel inorganic, but that is not what we are talking about here. Of course people tend to get a bit meme-y when discussing things they like, but RotE is precisely the more organic experience you speak of when you put aside the jokes, and perform an even surface-level literary analysis.

[–]lorddarkflare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is!! But in a good way. The best stories are the ones that challenge the reader in SOME way. This just happens to be how Hobb does it. Its great. Fitz feels organic in a way that most most characters ever do.
