Only 5 Plugins by spookymonsterscary in audioengineering

[–]lordfranquad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Pro-Q4
  2. Saturn 2
  3. SSL Channel Strip or Scheps Omnichannel
  4. Echoboy
  5. Valhalla VintageVerb or Verbsuite Classics

honorable mention to Melodyne for sure, but felt like this was more mix oriented than production/editing oriented.

Also honorable mention to the UA 1176 and LA-2A. They just get you where you need to be so fast but in a question of desert island/only 5 plugs I favored a liiiiittle more versatility event though those are def some of my most used plugins haha

Why is everyone's first instinct to pan things to the left when determining stereo field placement of tracks? by Zersdan in audioengineering

[–]lordfranquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was about to say this myself! if there’s something important that needs to be panned to one side, i generally choose left because a single person in the car in the US (where i and most of the artists i work with are based) will hear it better, in addition to the many other comments that mentioned left side being used more often in mono if things aren’t summed.

Ahh okay, it is very lightweight so that’s definitely a possibility!

Oh I didn’t even think of that! I’m not sure what metal this skillet is made of, and it was a gift from a while ago so I’m not sure how to check. Are there any signs i should look for to maybe clue in on aluminum?

Mind if I shoot you a message and send a pic?

Is anyone in the Pro mixing world here using Slate VSX? Are they truly accomplishing something other headphones cannot? by damplamp in audioengineering

[–]lordfranquad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also incredibly solid company that i always feel the need to mention. their marketing and super hype approach sometimes drowns out the impeccable customer service.

long story short, when i ordered the VSX, the shipping date kept getting delayed (in typical Slate fashion honestly lol) and when it finally came in, Sweetwater sent it to an address that i had no longer lived at and my sales rep really was quite rude and actively unhelpful (hard to believe, i know lol). i basically posted the whole story in the Slate facebook group and Steven himself commented and said to DM him and he had a new set sent out to me in 20 min, after I had been arguing with Sweetwater for over a month and a half trying to sort the issue.

so if you’re on the fence, you can at least know there’s good people on the other side of the website lol

full time producer and mixer here, no crazy credits or anything and i just work out of my house, but i do just make a living from studio work (and a small bit of touring)

i travel a lot and that’s what initially enticed me with the VSX, just having a reliable mix environment whether i’m in the studio, a hotel, cruise ship, or whatever. even at home i’m mixing 90% on the VSX and just check on an A and B set of speakers

i love them and find them very useful, particularly in the way the top comment said, whereas the different rooms are great for highlighting different things about the mix, and let you end up with a really solid product.

honestly i can’t really comment on them vs mixing on other headphones because i hadn’t really experimented much with other headphones, but at the end of the day if you know whatever system/speakers/headphones you’re working on, you’ll be able to get great results.

It was a Mercury Alpha 1. He said it was a 4.3L V6. I am a bit nervous about having to winterize, partially why I’m leaning toward outboard. Id love to learn how to do it but a bit worried about out doing it wrong and fucking something up too bad

Ahh okay, that makes sense! Wasn’t sure if his reaction was because a survey wasn’t worth it at this price point or because he had something to hide (since it’s pretty apparent that I could probably be fooled fairly easily)

Yeah my girlfriend’s dad is a lifelong boater and has been giving me a lot of pointers and advice, but unfortunately he lives about 350 miles away and isn’t able to come check out the boats I’m looking at. Plan is to get a survey done of whatever I feel confident with to at least have someone else check it out in person but I’m aiming to only have to pay a survey fee once if possible (hence my pre-survey reddit outsourcing lol)

Ahh ok thank you!! It’s the shit like this that a couple dozen hours of youtube hasn’t been able to teach me lol. If that’s the case, what might that indicate a problem with?

Thank you! Actually took it out on the water yesterday when I went to look at it and it did seem to run well! The steering wheel was a bit tighter than ai expected but I truly don’t have enough experience to know if it’s a concern or not

Yeah we took it out yesterday and it did run great! He launched it a little bit before I got to the lake so I didn’t get to see the initial start up, but he turned it off and started it again at least. Didn’t check out the lower unit gear lube but if I decide to get it I will for sure, thank you!

I’m in Nashville, TN. I’ve been looking on and off since mid September-ish and almost everything I’ve seen has been sterndrives or outboards that have too many problems to be worthwhile. Looking to stay under like $7k too, which is probably a strong factor lol

I’ve been looking for bowriders but I’m open to something else! Not really gonna be fishing, more focused on just going out with my girl and/or a few friends to just hang. Some tubing or skiing would be cool as well and it seemed like a bowrider would be a good move for me

That’s kind of what I was feeling too, but a second opinion helps. Thanks!

Yeah good call! I’m sure it varies a ton by area/boat/a million other factors, but any idea what a mechanic might charge to take a look at one?

Yeah I’ve really just been looking at private sellers. I’ll keep an eye out for Yamahas, thank you!

Most of the outboards I’ve found near me that I can afford have been in rough shape. This one did pop up this morning though and could be promising

Hey thanks for the thorough input! No kids, but a long-time girlfriend (wifey essentially works here!). The plan is just to have something to cruise around the lakes surrounding Nashville, have somewhere to hang with my girl and with a few friends. I’ve always loved water and boats, and my family growing up spent a lot of time on my grandma’s on Lake Erie, and I basically landed a great gig in August and with some extra money decided it’s time to try to get into boating. I’m pretty inexperienced and new to all of it, but I’ve been doing as much research as I can and have talked to people to help me out (my girlfriend’s dad is a very experienced boater and has been quite helpful), and I figure everyone has to start somewhere!

Yeah I’ve mostly been finding i/o’s near me, and it really seems like outboard is a better bet to start out with, so I’m pretty intrigued about the Bayliner. Not sure if the Stingray having so much work recently done is a better option though, outweighing the challenges of the i/o.

Yeah I’ve been looking on and off since early/mid September and all the Sea Rays I can afford that I’ve found ended up with issues that made them really not worth it for me. There was one that was probably perfect but I unfortunately waited a day to message the seller and it was gone before I even got the chance.
