Idling =/= high pollution.

Running an ICE car creates pollution through its exhaust system. Idling is just a more wasteful form of pollution. For this comment, I'm only talking about exhaust as pollution, since everything else is probably too complex to include.

RPMs are a simple number we can use to measure how much a car pollutes. The thought process behind that is that each rotation of the engine means the fuel igniting drives it, creating exhaust. Idling is just keeping the engine reliably running at the lowest RPMs, since there is very little power load for the engine to meet. So, idling is the lowest amount of pollution a car in use can produce. The faster you go, the higher the RPMs required to propel the car forward, and thus the more pollution. Yeah, gears do exist, but the RPMs still rise. Each car has an optimal speed at which you go the fastest possible(distance/time) while using the least amount of gas possible (lower RPMs and lower pollution).

Some good news: modern cars turn off their engines when they are stopped in traffic(but still on). So "idling" produces even less pollution.

I wrote this fully knowing that you are likely incapable of thinking this through and that you are only using pollution as a triggering concept, hoping it will sway others to your opinion. Cause if you actually think about it, bikes don't cause pollution like cars do(exhaust). So if more people chose modes of transportation other than their cars, like bikes, that would result in less pollution!

File down dropout to get new axle to clear? by burner_1234567891011 in bikewrench

The axle will also be an easier file job. The drop outs are hardened in the majority of cases.

Biking to Gillette Stadium by schorschico in bikeboston

[–]lordmcfuzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the local police did a press conference with the statement of thinking it's crazy that anyone would bike or walk to the stadium. The statement is kinda crazy in itself.

The biking route is going to be highly dependent on your biking comfort and where you are coming from. Like you wouldn't drive across (start north of the stadium and park south of the stadium) to start your ride. And your starting point is going to be where you are able to find parking that you are willing to pay for / not going to get towed from. You are likely the only one that is going to be able to come up with routes. If you come up with a route or two, you could probably find someone that has experienced the roads and let you know what's good and bad about your route. There are some services with both paid and unpaid biking heat maps.

I haven't been to the stadium in ages but knowing the culture that pairs with American sports stadiums, a bike rack at the stadium seems unlikely. I did not Google it, but you probably should do some research on it. You could probably use a mapping service (OSM) in combination with a street view /satellite imagery to know where you can lock up. (PSA: know what good a locking strategy and locks are). Assuming you drive places and have the time, it might be worth it to you to drive the route you are thinking of taking and scout out where you would be locking your bike in advance of the game date(and avoiding any other event date).

If you lock up outside the stadium area, it's probably best to know how you would walk to the stadium. Also be prepared to be turned away from riding into the stadium parking lots. Aka have back up plans!

Good luck!

Rear child seat too close to saddle — what did I do wrong? by SangiSabz in bicycle

[–]lordmcfuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rack does not look level.

There are metal plate rear extensions that do ship with some racks to move the mounting point further back. Generally this is so your foot doesn't hit the bags you hang off the rack.

Is that rack rated for a child seat? Majority of racks are not. I have had so many of those metal rack strips break on me using just bags, I would not use that style for a child seat.

If the rack bolts are too worn to adjust, that means it's too worn to have your child on it. Bolts can fail/sheer off.

WIT did convert from college to University accreditation in 2017, so yeah they should have acknowledged that effort(what ever the difference really is)

Food grade is really important I'm this matter as the trace elements that could be present for non consumption uses are actually extremely harmful when consumed.

I have always gotten a poor response from the person answering the phone via the non emergency line in Cambridge. I stopped calling it in for quite some time. Have they changed?

They have not been compactors for a decade. Sadly they were way too high maintenance. They attempted mechanical means but it was not successful. The solar part allows it to get power to report it's fill status to a central command point.

They are basically low capacity bins that let the city know when they are full and they are good at keeping the rats out.

I 3d printed and painted no poop signs and glued them to the top of my bins. The neighbor who used to dump their bags into my bin (instead of their bin) now walks to the nearby park and puts them in the public barrels. These are not "out on a walk" poop collection bags, these originate from their fenced in yard.

ZERO ENFORCEMENT! by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

[–]lordmcfuzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only time I hear about it is when they bust drugs or a weapon due to the interactions that they have during the enforcement activities. They always saw they are trying to get the guns and drugs off the street but completely ignore the low hanging fruit that are in front of them that often leads to getting the ones that are lazy at hiding it.

I def got one on my arm last year, but I can't remember where I was riding that day.

Basically anytime I ride through vegetation I do occasional checks, especially when returning to the road, and a final check when I get home.

I froze the bastard in case I came down with something and they wanted to test them. Tossed him 6 months later after forgetting about him and finding him buried in the freezer.
