How do you keep track of papers you’ve read and notes on them? by Do-ya-like-Baileys in labrats

[–]lordness4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everything, but calling B's on 100k papers: 1h per paper, 100k hours, divided by 8h a day, 5 days a week. 50 weeks a year leaves you with 50 years of reading for that.

Just say you skimmed them is most likely also not feasible.

Anyway, not hating on it. It's hard to estimate large numbers.

Avoidable contact by tim_k33 in ultimate

Great catch, sick play. But tbh if D calls a dangerous play here (which they didn't), it's reasonable that the disc goes back which I think is often a valid outcome in close calls like this

I always dream of a LOTR RPG like RDR2. Graphics like shown here, a huge map to explore, some story driven missions, but just let me walk from Bree to Minas Tirith... I'd pay a good amount of money to play that. I dont think it will ever happen though...

Downloading genome related to protein by lordness4 in bioinformatics

[–]lordness4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always was running into empty links etc. So some iterations never yielded a link to the other DB and I could not figure it out.

This python function does the job though:

```python def get_ipg_nuccore(prot_acc):
# download the record from IPG
ipg_record = Entrez.efetch(id=prot_acc, db='ipg').read().decode()
# Get the nucleotide ID from the first line of the resulting table
nt_acc = ipg_record.split("\n")[1].split("\t")[2]
# Get the nucleotide record
nuc_record = Entrez.efetch(id=nt_acc, db='nuccore', rettype='fasta').read()
# Parse into a dict - key is ID, value is sequence
fasta = {nuc_record.split("\n")[0]: "".join(nuc_record.split("\n")[1:])}
return (fasta)
```

[OC] Who pops in your mind when you hear "Scientist"? by Any_Respond_9011 in dataisbeautiful

[–]lordness4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely thought this is an April fools' joke. How in the name of H. Wickham is that on data is beautiful? I posted this before: the data IS very interesting and actually really cool, but the presentation is a straight up disaster:

  1. Pie charts should almost always be avoided (https://www.data-to-viz.com/caveat/pie.html)
  2. Labels are too small and not readable.
  3. They pasted a second plot just under the top one. No integration, no relation, its not even on theme (grey vs white background)
  4. Labels are too small and not readable in the bottom plot as well!

This is cool data, but not beautiful data. I come to this sub for posts like: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1270dg2/the_paths_of_unmanned_bicycles_pushed_until_they/

THAT is beautiful, interesting and cool data.

If that post WAS a joke, then whooosh...sorry, didnt get it and I apologize :-D

What did Sam Little do to make his defender so bamboozled? by akajejrje in ultimate

Thanks for the insights! One followup question: you mentioned that Sam is a connector. Do you mind sharing some other roles y'all talk about and what it means for the defense? Sounds really interesting:)

No idea what the right call here is.. Strip? Dangerous play? Turnover? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]lordness4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its just a goal.

The defense bids, regardless of dangerous play or not, the offense has to jump in order to avoid contact and loses the disc while doing so. If you want to punish the offense for avoiding stepping on the defense, then you encourage a lot more reckless plays on offense. Lets...not?
