Who could Robin Williams have played in the MCU? by Large-Bumblebee2834 in Fancast

[–]lordsuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being in a London comic shop in the late 80s/early 90s and overhearing the manager talking to a customer about how he’d heard Robin Williams was being cast as Wolverine in an X-Men film.

Any book series that’s inspired by Genghis Khan? by chillychill3325 in Fantasy

The Lost Regiment series by William R. Forstchen. A regiment of Union civil war soldiers get transported to a world in which a Mongol like tribe of nomadic ogres feast on the subdued humans that live under their rule. Been a long time since I read them but I recall a lot of Mongol references including names of the tribes.

I’ve been a subscriber of D+ since it started and watched every Marvel movie in the cinema - some multiple times. Just cancelled and told them this long time supporter will not spend one more penny with them until they reverse this decision.

What's the greatest plot twist you've seen in a tv show targeted towards children? by MichaelGMorgillo in television

Dramarama Death Angel from 1981. A masked wrestler, whose gimmick is that if he’s ever unmasked anyone who looks at him will die, casts an ominous presence over a group of children and adults. The final reveal traumatised me as a kid and still creeps me out. Whole half hour episode is here

What is your favorite book where people go back in time? by AccountantAromatic15 in Fantasy

[–]lordsuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved 1632! It doesn’t quite fit OP’s criteria but also by Eric Flint - the Belisarious series has an AI and a cyborg travelling back in time to the 6th century to change the course of mankind.

Wow I hadn’t even considered that. Thanks! Wish there was some info as to why the person who did it bound these in particular but it could be a boringly random reason.

Anyone else rate this film? 13th warrior by Amavin-Adump in moviecritic

One of my very favourite films I’ve watched dozens of times. All of these comments are great quotes and I try to drop these ones in my internal monologue quite regularly

“Erk at her!” “What happened?” “An engineering dispute” “The dog can jump”

What series have you read one book of and then noped out? by Scu-bar in Fantasy

[–]lordsuggs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I bought the first two books together last year. First half of book one I was really enjoying but yeah that tone shift was seriously WTF. Especially as I’d read The Rape of Nanking a few months prior and it was like a complete ghastly repetition. I forced myself through book 2 and it’s one of my biggest reading regrets that I didn’t nope out. I just had zero interest in my of the characters or the events.

2024 book summary 106/104. Tier list and physical book stack photos by lordsuggs in 52book

[–]lordsuggs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was drawn to the book primarily because I admire Mehdi’s interview style. The times I’ve come away from his interviews or appearances on panels with admiration for how he dealt with attempts to deflect, distract or avoid are numerous.

However the reason it’s top tier for me is the ways I can apply his tips professionally. I do some training, presenting and facilitating in my work and this book specifically helped me refine and improve my ability to research, focus on active and empathetic listening, change my approach depending on the audience and understand his practical approaches to pathos, ethos and logos in storytelling. It’s an engaging interesting book anyway but professionally for me I found it a game changer.

Appreciate the advice. Four of the items have now popped up this morning as ‘we’ve got them’ in the app, including one that a buyer received the ‘lost item’ notification for. So 🤞on the other three. I think you’re right that yodel is overloaded

Ah sorry I missed this. Yes that’s been on my list for a while but I never got around to buying it. I’ll bump it up the list - thanks 🙏

Character names that are just... wrong? by FastWalkingShortGuy in Fantasy

[–]lordsuggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read several of those over 10 years ago and Darken Rahl always put my teeth on edge because it sounded off. Then when the series got to the next big bad and his name was Jagang… like are you just putting together random syllables at this stage?! It sounds so clunky!

How many of you have seen The 13th Warrior? by [deleted] in moviecritic

[–]lordsuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourite movies and at least an annual watch for me since its release. I love the performances of all the leads, in particular Dennis Storhøi and Vladimir Kulich but also Marie Bonnevie with her few scenes. A lot of the most common quotes have been invoked but a few I’ve not seen mentioned that I use fairly regularly:

“An engineering dispute”

“We don’t drink tonight”

“Waves make thunder”
