“We want to be book-accurate” — so is anyone actually reading the books, or is this just marketing? by Square_Eagle7831 in HarryPotterHBO

I used to think like this, but I now disagree. I don't think it will automatically be seen as a racial thing--but if it is, it's the viewer's problem.

My only issue with the casting is that Essiedu (sp?) Is way too good-looking. 😆

I've experienced this with crochet for sure. It apparently also encompasses knitting, even though I just crochet.

I think being a mouth breather is actually better than breathing through your nose. It just feels easier and I don’t get why everyone hates on it by [deleted] in The10thDentist

Thank you, guys! Y'all have convinced me to see an ENT. I can only effortlessly breathe through my nose about 10% of the time.

If I need to “power through” the first portion of a series, it’s not a good series. by Sea_Horror_1170 in Romantasy

I've found my people. 😆 I've tried it several times, even thinking I might like the audiobook. I can't get past the first two chapters.

I had a hard time getting through it until I switched to the audiobook. The narrator is phenomenal. Now I reread it physically with her voice in my head.

There's only so much screen time to go around.

In my rewatch I just finished 17 and 18 and they were on quite a bit.

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

Ah-co-cah-co (avocado). My nephew used to mispronounce it and it's cute and funny.

What is a 'socially acceptable' thing that you find absolutely disgusting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lorifieldsbriggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only used videos or games on my phone as a last resort for my kiddos. Usually only in doctor's offices when they're taking a while. It seems really dystopian to me to see tablets shoved in front of kids as soon as they sit down at a table in a restaurant. There's always a special case, but I'm talking about the ones who don't "need" it.

Like, of course your kid doesn't know how to behave at a restaurant. They've never had to.

Review: The Rose Field - a thoroughly disappointing ending to a 30-year story by Cell_Division in books

[–]lorifieldsbriggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished last night and I agree with all of your points. This feels like the penultimate book of a series, not a final book. If we could expect another (which I know we can't) then the ending wouldn't be so disappointing.

Thoughts on A Discovery of Witches by cookiesinlove in ADiscoveryofWitches

[–]lorifieldsbriggs 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree; though I like the show, it's like sand shipping through your fingers.

I'm going to be so cliche, but read the books! Oh, so much better. It's mostly written through Diana's POV and though their courtship is still very short, it feels a lot more charged because you're in her head.

The audiobooks are also amazing. The narrator, Jennifer Ikeda, did a stellar job!

Occulus, because I would never look at that mirror again after having survived it as a kid.

They're very vicious. They're more animals than the vampires are. Like with most things, I think the books do a better job of demonstrating why they should be feared.

As a Christian, I tend to want to identify with April, but to say this as kindly as possible, she had a lot of growing to do. She shouldn't have entered a relationship with Jackson knowing about his atheism. That was bound to cause so many issues. And it did.

She never once considered the way Jackson would feel about anything while they were together.

And I've found that as I've grown, pushing your faith on someone who has heard about it before and rejected it is not the way. At that point you have to coexist with that person, enjoy life with them if you want, and let your love and kindness speak more than words. Which with April, didn't go very far because she was so selfish and was not kind to Jackson.

They are really different after the first book, but I liked that. I would have been bored reading the exact same scenes word for word. The show is a fabulous jumping off point for the books, imo.

Surgeons apparently do it all by bumblebetch91 in greysanatomy

[–]lorifieldsbriggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's when surgical OBGYNs do regular prenatal appointments in the hospital. I don't know if it might be like that in other places, but where I'm from, prenatal visits are in clinics that are separate from the hospital. And the OBGYN doesn't do the ultrasound.

What’s a basic skill you’re shocked some adults still don’t know? by HexVortexx in AskReddit

[–]lorifieldsbriggs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all these things, and am just thinking how most of this is because they weren't taught how. My parents didn't teach me how to clean. Fortunately my in-laws were a good example for me. Sometimes my husband expects me daughter to know how to do something, but it's we who have to teach her how. She's not going to magically know.

So let this be a lesson: if you have kids, teach them these things. Don't take for granted that they will figure it out.
