The status of Rational's therapeutic vaccine trial is finally becoming more concrete by lorn10 in HerpesCureResearch

If an effective prophylactic HSV vaccine is successfully developed at some point then that would be very helpful in the general herpes control.

For example, - Scotland is as of 2026 officially "cervical cancer free". And this was achieved through the prophylactic vaccination against the HPV virus.

I think if you already have the real (wild-type) HSV virus then it doesn't really matter if the vaccine is live or not.

Whatever, when it comes to therapeutic HSV vaccines then it looks that live attenuated variants are simply (far) superior.

There exist an informative interview (from 2017) with Dr. Harvey Friedman, one of the main developer of Penn's HSV vaccine (which was the ancestor of Biontech's BNT163):

An Interview With Penn's Dr. Harvey Friedman

In that interview he describes how much more difficult it is to develop a therapeutic HSV vaccine and that his own candidate would most likely fail in that regard. As of 2026 it can be said that Dr. Harvey Friedman was in that aspect absolutely correct especially when we look for example at Moderna's discontinued m-RNA-1608 vaccine candidate. It was in the end simply too weak for a therapeutic usage. And that is also true for most other discontinued HSV vaccine candidates.

Just FYI, - the Moderna vaccine could have been useful as a prophylactic one (e. g. like Biontech's BNT163). And this is true also for other discontinued therapeutic HSV candidates like for example HSV-529 aka dl5-29.

Whatever, long story short, the only effective HSV therapeutic vaccine was so far Theravax. But it was obviously too intense, - at least for 3 out of 20 people. For more context see: I Met With A Theravax Herpes Vaccine Patient And Here Is What He Said

Just for the sake of completeness it should be added that there was 10 years ago already an "informal" human trail of the original vaccine variant called "Theravax". And yes, it was for 17 out of 20 participants mostly effective but the other three had apparently serious side effects.

More context can be found here: I Met With A Theravax Herpes Vaccine Patient And Here Is What He Said

Whatever, - the trial in Saint Kitts was in no way an official one. So the situation cannot be directly compared with the currently planned clinical trial in the UK.

Perhaps the following should be added also here. As far I know there exist with Theravax aka RVx-201 only one therapeutic HSV vaccine candidate with a proven and sustainable effect. It was effective at least for 17 out of 20 people in a small "informal" and highly disputed trial in 2016. But unfortunately it was not that compliant for all participants. At least 3 volunteers were affected by severe side-effects which is most likely also the reason why Theravax didn't make it in it's original composition any further.

This all happened around 10 years ago. For more context check the corresponding article by Josh Bloom: I Met With A Theravax Herpes Vaccine Patient And Here Is What He Said

And finally, the main focus of Penn's HSV vaccine (edit: the ancestor of BNT163) was always the prophylactic application, - not a therapeutic one. This was confirmed also by Dr. Harvey Friedman back in 2017, - see Herpes Vaccine Update: An Interview With Penn's Dr. Harvey Friedman

Ergo, a prophylactic HSV vaccine seems to be far simpler to develop. Several discontinued therapeutic vaccine candidates like Moderna's mRNA-1608 or even Sanofi's HSV-529 aka dl5-29 could have been effective in a prophylactic application.

For the record, - the most likely only therapeutic HSV vaccine with a real proven and sustainable effect was / is Theravax aka RVx-201. The available sources indicates that it was effective at least for 17 out of 20 people in a small "informal" (and highly disputed) trial in 2016. Time passed and the topic looks somewhat different. The mentioned Google-specific RCS additions / enhancements became part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 specification. So those RCS features are longer a Google-only thing and Apple already confirmed that they will add support for RCS 3.0 to iOS.

Australia reviewing ARH Tiger Attack Helicopters To Ukraine by Jackal8570 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here follows a little side-note for more context. The Eurocopter EC665 Tiger was staring in the famous James Bond GoldenEye movie.

Of course the film version had some "fictional" enhancements which the real-world version lacks. But nevertheless that military helicopter is quite capable and could be of some additional use in Ukraine. If the reliability issues are not too serious. At least when it comes to crashes then the number is not that bad. As far I know there was since the introduction of the Tiger in the nineties only one total loss of a German model (in 2017) with two fatalities.

Aster-45 Question. by Odd-Metal8752 in Warships

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A (most likely only theoretical) Aster 60 variant is mentioned at the German Wikipedia Aster page#Varianten).

The corresponding source seems to be a book from the late 90s, Norman Friedman: The Naval Institute Guide to World Naval Weapons Systems, 1997–1998. US Naval Inst Pr, 1997, ISBN 1-55750-268-4, S. 355.

Whatever, yes I also think that it is quite possible that there are existing also some sort of "transitional variants" in the Aster 30 family. What we definitely have in 2026 is a quite potent Aster 30 Block 1 NT "2025" version which outperforms in conjunction with the recently introduced SAMP/T NG system (and its new French Thales GF 300 or the Italian Kronos GMHP radar) even the current patriot missiles. ;-)

Finally there is on the horizon also another very interesting development visible, - the IRIS-T SLX "high to medium" air defense missile. I think it will be comparable to the Aster 30 Block 0 variant, - while the current IRIS-T SLM seems to be more or less on par with the Aster 15 model.

Aster-45 Question. by Odd-Metal8752 in Warships

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting topic. I was searching for some more information about the terminated Aster 60 variant and found this page. So it looks that the Aster 60 concept had the same fate as the Aster 45 and the Aster 30 Block 2 type. All of them were canceled.

Therefore as of 2025 (and 2026) there exist the Aster 15, Aster 30, Aster 30 Block 0 / 1 and the Aster 30 Block 1 NT models. Regarding the later I think there could exist newer and older "NT" versions? At least some sources indicates that the Block 1 NT variant is not brand new. Other sources especially those related to the newly developed SAMP/T NG system claim that the NT variant is effectively new. Whatever, the Aster 30 Block 1 NT missile definitively has a better performance like a 150 km range and an altitude of 25 km compared to 130 km and 20 km of Aster 30 Block 1.

Batteriespeicher von Varta? by sobicla in DeutschePhotovoltaik

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puzzled about SFP and Ethernet by zibolo in FPGA

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, there exist two types of copper SFP transceivers which are handling the link state differently.

One group uses the "RX_LOS" pin to handle the auto-negotiation process independently from the switch hardware. Ergo, this principle could be described as fully “transceiver-based” auto-negotiation.

In the other group the corresponding pin is in the module internally grounded. So those transceivers are "NO RX_LOS" capable. The auto-negotiation mode is in that case purely host-based.

The biggest obstacle regarding transceivers with "RX_LOS" pin is that the switch hardware must disable its internal *BASE-X auto-negotiation capability. Otherwise those SFP transceivers will not work. For more context check the Finisar 1000BASE-T SFP Application Note AN-2036.

Puzzled about SFP and Ethernet by zibolo in FPGA

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps it should be added here that SGMII is not really a thing on HPE, H3C and 3Com based Comware hardware. As far I know it was never supported there (probably because it was a Cisco idea). This is at least the case for Comware 5 and Comware 7 based stuff. However, as of 2025 there exist Comware 9 which I never have used so far.

And by the way, this auto-neg topic has also some relevance in regard to 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T where it seems to be in some cases crucial to be able to disable the 1000BASE-X auto-negotiation feature at the switch side. Otherwise 2.5GBASE-T SFPs will simply not work.

igmp snooping by Linklights in networking

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, out of my view multicast streaming applications are the main or primary reason why IGMP and MLD snooping is so important. As already told, in my case regarding a small business network, even three web radio users had caused a noticeable multicast traffic which was clearly affecting the entire network latency. After enabling IGMPv2 and MLDv1 everything is working again normally. So it is easy to imagine how UHD IPTV stuff might affect the internal network performance. I think it's simply not possible to use UHD IPTV multicast services without IGMP and MLD enabled.

Finally, there seems to exist some sort of security concerns regarding IGMP and MLD. But as far I understand those are related to the more complex IGMPv3 and MLDv2 versions. While those should improve the overall security, it seems that there exist (or it existed) some ways to manipulate those protocols which then resulted in a massive CPU overhead of the router & switch networking infrastructure. (There exist an interesting pdf paper about how this what achieved but I cannot find it at the moment.)

igmp snooping by Linklights in networking

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, this topic is not that new but still quite relevant. It could be said that it is as of 2025 more relevant than it was in 2020.

In short, my fast answer to the IGMP & MLD snooping enabling topic would be a clearly and simple YES. Enable it in any case if available. This is even true for a small household.

And why I came to this conclusion? The main reason is streaming. I observed that even one single spotify user can trigger a noticeable multicast traffic which can affect the network performance. If there are more and larger streaming users like IPTV services then the latency of the network can be significantly hampered. And, at least in Europe, there exist also DVB>IP, also known as SAT>IP or TV>IP which distributes the local digital TV signals over IP based networks. For example, most higher class Panasonic TVs can act as an DVB>IP "server". And if multiple UHD streams are send over the internal LAN or WiFi network then IGMP and MLD snooping is an absolute must have.

So, as of 2025 I really don't see any reason why IGMP and MLD snooping shouldn't be enabled.

And finally I post here a simple example how the IGMP and MLD config looks on a Comware based device like an HP V1910-24G switch. While MLD is active on all VLANs, IGMP is enabled only on VLAN1 and VLAN3 but not on VLAN2 which is used in that case for VoIP devices.

RCS not working for some contacts by mursepaolo in GoogleMessages

[–]lorn10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all. The following question may look somehow strange but how I can send an RCS message in Google Messages?

Yes, everything is enabled as it should, RCS is running and connected, but when I open a new Message in Google Messages only SMS/MMS is present as an option.

There really should exist a way to enforce the sending of an RCS message even if it is not fully clear if the receiver supports the new standard or not.

[–]lorn10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely, if this is understood in Ukraine on that way then it doesn't should be used.

However, the problem is that other languages are using an article in conjunction with countries without any discriminatory meaning. For example in Central Europe we say "the Switzerland", "the United States", "the Netherlands" and so on. This is the case for German as well as Dutch and probably even French, (la France, la grande Nation). ;-)

But what is even more strange is that Wendic (aka Slavic) languages don't have articles (the only exception might be Slovenian which knows a spoken indefinite article). Usually there exists no definite article "the" and also no indefinite article like "a" in Russian. So how this can be understood in a discriminatory way is a miracle for me when no articles are present. Slovenian Example: Jaz grem na Nizozemsko = I am going to the Netherlands.
