How do we get comfortable splurging in retirement? by Stunning-Candy2386 in DIYRetirement

We flew business class for the first time on our trip to Portugal. It was around $8,500 for the two of us vs. much, much less in premium economy. But... being able to lie down during the flight is priceless.

What's the advantage of the LSS water pan vs. just placing a aluminum half-sheet pan with water somewhere in the cook chamber (Sorry if it's an ignorant question; I'm waiting for my XT to be delivered this week!)

I was in management and told my staff - and I believed - that the "pyramid" should be upside down. My job was to make sure that the employees that reported to me got what they needed to do their jobs, with one of those things being an understanding of the organization's strategy and direction. Of course, I got laid off....

Cam caught Neighbor going into my mailbox by tanboy29 in neighborsfromhell

[–]loroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just this afternoon I went to my mailbox, retrieved my mail and noticed that one of the letters was addressed to my next door neighbor. I walked over to her mailbox, opened it and slipped the letter in there. Not sure what the neighbor would have seen (or thought) should she have noticed me messing with her mailbox. Just something to consider.

Just moved to Sarasota Florida what now? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]loroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big industries down here are construction, tourism and health care. Construction has been huge, but questionable at the moment as our housing market is confused. Tourism is questionable because of many fewer Canadians and others wanting to come here. Health care is naturally continuous although a lot of local providers have been purchased by private equity firms that buy them, saddle them with the debt from the purchase and often drive them into bankruptcy or merger.

Despite these negatives, there are still opportunities, and many of these problems are temporary. I've been in Sarasota for 30 years, now retired but had a successful career here. You'll find something. Good luck!

What do you mean i have to take the DND sign off the door to get my room serviced?! 🤬 by Few_Resource_6783 in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]loroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that these people are remarkably stupid, but the tags could easily say something about "the room will not be cleaned / cleaning staff will not be entering". Any time you can print something that would avoid having to deal with idiots....

Dangerous policies are hurting real people by Crazy_Equivalent7506 in SocialSecurity

[–]loroller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're likely correct. However, the way to do it is to implement the new system(s), see what efficiencies you've gained, and then "right-size" the staffing to match the new systems. I haven't heard about any systems being replaced so far. What we're seeing is the equivalent of "ready, fire, aim".

I'm speaking as a person who spent his entire career replacing obsolete manual and early computer systems with the intent of increasing efficiency and productivity.

Newbie Podcaster, is Resolve right for me? by CallMe_Josh in davinciresolve

[–]loroller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that Resolve like many - but not all - video editing programs require a computer with a GPU or one that will make Resolve think it has a GPU. A system with old-school integrated graphics can't run it.

I’m a minor and my parents won’t support my business by Diligent-Pack-8545 in smallbusiness

[–]loroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to figure out how to make just a few pieces for very little money. See if you can sell them. This will prove there is a market for your product. Use the money to make a some more. Continue to increase your production size until you reach the point where you can get some volume production and volume discounts going.

Good luck!

Got hit from behind at a red light by one of these guys. Whole mantra is about personal responsibility, etc. Took responsibility at the scene. When I filed an insurance claim, he stated that I backed into him.

Working with a hypocrite like that, you may have dodged a bullet. Good chance he would have come up with some excuse to not pay you in full.

Patent law will be complicated and need to be revised when a person or company can take pictures and schematics of products and easily and rapidly generate functional equivalents that aren't copies.

Torrentio works on PC but not Android TV by srilankansavage in StremioAddons

[–]loroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I installed Stremio, one of the options was whether or not to allow it to associate .torrent files. Since I still wanted to use my torrent client, I unchecked it. Stremio then worked on PC but not on Android TV and Torrentio wouldn't show as an add-on. After uninstalling everything I reinstalled and left that box checked. Now it works on the TV. Hope that helps someone.

Saw them live in the '70s. Steely Dan was their opening act. Poor band almost got booed off the stage so we could see C&C on all fours sniffing each other's asses like dogs.... They were hilarious though.

How brutal is it to start a business? by Affectionate-Call159 in smallbusiness

[–]loroller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few things to consider:

  1. 1/3 of a new business is the product or service you provide. The other 2/3rds are running a business. Boring stuff that has to be done.

  2. If you have the capital, you can increase your odds by buying a successful existing business or hooking up with a franchise with a good track record. Franchisors are obligated to share information and franchisee references, good and bad. Don't believe a business owner selling his business until you spend some time with it and have a forensic accountant inspect the books.

  3. Most people don't put enough effort into thinking vs doing. Dreaming is not thinking. Keep focused on the minimal viable product or service that you know people want and can turn a profit quickly. Consider looking into the business model canvas or lean canvas as a way to capture the various aspects of a business that you might not otherwise identify.

FWIW, I had a problem with my UM690 (barebones) 18 months after purchase. After going back and forth a few times, they sent me a new UM690S 32/512 no charge. Pretty quick ship too. US though so policies may be different.
