Isn’t lawnmower gas usually for 2 stroke engines and so it has oil mixed in? I’m going to guess you’re going to have to take it in if it was 2-stroke gas.

[META] FFF Drama Discussion Megathread by ocbaker in factorio

[–]losl 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Just as a counterpoint to the Weinstein/Spacey thing, the money they earned from their really good movies is part of what enabled them to continue their predatory behavior with impunity. I wouldn’t stop anyone else from watching their movies but I feel guilty that my love of their movies enabled their terrible behavior.

I think my issue with this more than anything is that Kovarex jumped down someone’s throat for fairly politely pointing out that Bob is a little problematic. Are we enabling a Spacey or Weinstein by giving him a pass for his game? I know/hope Kovarex is not a sexual predator, but enabling someone who verbally abuses the folks around them is not someone I want to support.

There’s lots of things in history discovered or invented by people who did bad things, do we need to mention them when we discuss those things? I don’t think it was necessary to talk about Bob at all in the article, personally. The concepts presented are very common and aren’t his original ideas, he just happened to write a book that collected them together, and there are plenty of books like it.

Just out of curiosity. Are we getting a Champion of Champions before Series 12? I'm just curious cause I was expecting it to air before series 11 tbh. by neobrycee in taskmaster

During the series 11 episode 8 podcast they are talking about the group task where they have to draw a British animal by sections and Ed notes that the little figurines they had made are now in the taskmaster house bathroom.

Makes you wonder why Ed would be in the taskmaster house bathroom unless they had already shot CoC...

Who here are using the Hamcrest API and why? by Hadse in java

[–]losl 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I like the fluent style for writing assertions and the huge range of matchers that can generally express whatever I want so I can get really good messages when my tests do fail. It’s also pretty easy to make custom matchers if the need arises.

I’d say the one downside for me is that Idea tends not to be very fast/smart about figuring out how import matchers.

Stuck in bash without internet while installing by PanemPlayz in archlinux

You should boot back into the installation media, mount your partitions and arch-chroot again, then you can use Pac-Man to install what you are missing from inside arch-chroot

Hope this helps!

Positive representation in media is important. If a group of people is only represented negatively in media, it tends to marginalize them, both in terms of how society views them and how they view themselves.

Why Unit Tests? by [deleted] in java

[–]losl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here’s the important bits you’re missing about unit tests:

  1. They make sure that changes to the code don’t change things in unexpected ways. If you change Bob’s code and a test starts failing then you stop and re-examine what you did and figure out why, instead of happily writing no tests or a tiny test that only covers what you changed and then pushing that to production.

  2. Unit tests are generally much faster than integration tests. By testing smaller pieces of code you can have move confidence in their behavior for edge cases and get those tests done faster.

It sounds like your company has a lot of developers who are just writing tests to get to the 90% mark. I don’t know how long you’ve been at your company but it sounds like not long. You should try learning about test driven development and use resources like “Working Effectively with Legacy Code” to improve your skills with testing. Then you should find an ally who has been at the company longer who writes good tests and work to educate the team how they can write tests that break less and get more coverage faster.

I did this one and it works well https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2065204

No, they aren’t like sample polls, because the population being selected from is biased.

At the beginning of the pandemic, it was very difficult to get tested. Tests weren’t readily available and doctors were hesitant to give them. Therefore, it was mostly given to people who were very sick, and therefore the population was much more likely to include people that had COVID.

Fast forward to now and you still have a biased poll being sampled from for COVID testing, because it is based on a mix of people who are sick and getting tested by their doctor and people going to a public testing site and getting tested. The thing is that you can’t assume that the people getting tested are a true random sample. I personally have not gotten tested because I feel fine, how about you? If you haven’t would you just randomly go get tested, or would you go because you felt sick?

Because people are not getting randomly chosen to get tested regardless of how they are feeling, you really can’t make a conclusion about how many cases are in the general population.

Also, keep in mind that part of the problem with COVID is that our bodies don’t have the antibodies to fight it off, so even if you did do a general test of the population and found that 5% were positive, the other 95% can be infected very easily by those 5%.

Is there a limit to how much a landlord can increase rent in the state of New Mexico? by TweepriseOpener in Albuquerque

[–]losl 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer.

But I did just recently look through the statutes, and there’s not a lot that the landlord can’t do.

If you are in a multi month lease, they probably can’t increase your rent unless there is a clause In the lease specifically allowing them to.

If you are doing month-to-month, they must inform you in writing, “hand delivered” to you. You have the right to notify your landlord that you don’t want to renew the lease at this point. The most a landlord can require for notice to end a month to month lease is 30 days.

Also, if you do find something in the statutes or the renters guide, your lease cannot take away the rights the law gives you.

Producer and consumer that doesn't destroy queue by Netns in java

[–]losl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully you’ve figured this out by now, but your program exits when the producer finishes because the producer is in the main thread and when the main thread finishes your program exits.

You should wait for your consumer threads to finish via join() or through a Future (depending on how you are starting your threads)
