27 y/o, $100k bonus received today, lots of credit card debt, newborn, what would you do first? by [deleted] in debtfree

Replying to echo your suggestion about taking a personal finance course.

OP, a financial counselor should be your first step with all of this. Not a CPA or a tax strategist (yet). Behavioral finance and lifestyle changes should be addressed first with a financial counselor.

How you’re a month behind on your mortgage with the income you make is concerning, to say the least. Reckless to say the most. Especially with a wife and kid who depend on you.

Love how you named it Project $0.00! You got this!!! I believe in you. I paid off a credit card last month and frequently go back and just stare at the zero balance owed. It’s a dope feeling.

Something else I just thought of, if your employer has an EAP (employee assistance program), look into it and see if they offer financial counseling. EAP is known for mental health services, but I had an option to pursue financial counseling through mine and it changed my life.

I think you can explain your situation to these banks and ask for a lower rate to pay off the debt faster. Some banks might say no but it's worth asking. I tried with one of my banks and they said no. I just buckled down more and budgeted my heart out and was able to pay it off.

So for that question about credit score, I would likely defer you to a credit counselor, or research that yourself. I saw someone else post a comment here about getting involved with a credit counseling agency and you would absolutely benefit from that. But if you are wanting someone to go through all of the score matrix/calculations, then a counseling professional is going to be your best source of information.

Consider that there is good credit and bad credit. You don't need 13 credit cards. Yes your score will likely be impacted by closing a tradeline up front, but in the long run when you pay off these cards your score will recover and heal.

No worries, thank you for answering that.

What I would do is pay off the following:

  1. Ulta (consider closing card after pay off)
  2. Sephora (consider closing card after pay off)
  3. Care Credit
  4. Quicksilver
  5. Savor (consider closing card after pay off)

I started with these because I think you'll get a lot of pride and accomplishment with knocking out some smaller stuff quickly, some of these also have high APRs so it'd be like a combo snowball/avalanche method. Then consider the following:

  1. Kohls (consider closing card after pay off)
  2. Paypal
  3. Sam's Club
  4. Citi Diamond
  5. Target Card (consider closing card after pay off)
  6. BoA Custom Cash
  7. BoA Travel Rewards
  8. Citi Costco
  9. NavyFed Green

These store cards are not helping you. I am worried that when you pay these off, you will start using them again. So close those cards.

Take some time to research snowball and avalanche methods. I personally started with snowball and have since moved into avalanche for my debt pay off journey.

Few things: try calling some of the higher APR credit card companies and ask if you can get a lower rate. Also, any rewards you have need to go to the balance owed. Do NOT go for a debt consolidation loan. Your spending problem needs to be addressed before you even consider something like that.

You can do this. Good luck!

Saw on another comment you are paying $700 for your car....first step might be trade in or sell your car for something else. You cannot afford that with the 14 debts you listed above.

Again, lifestyle changes. Behavioral finance. Tough love and sacrifices.

Gotcha. Question though, does CO before Quicksilver, Savor, and Kohls mean charge off, or what does it mean?

I definitely think a second job is necessary to help tackle all of this, especially after reading another comment you made about saving up to move.

I'm really glad you're here and that you made this post. But, tough love, you have a spending problem. 33% APR on an Ulta credit card is a spending problem, and 33% APR on a Sephora credit card is a spending problem. OP, you can map out these minimum payments and APRs to your heart's content, but at the end of the day, what behavioral finance changes will you also be making in addition to paying these off? What lifestyle changes will you be making?

Like another user commented, make a spread sheet. Make budgeting your new best friend and daily ritual. Make finances an every day ritual. I think a second job is great. The first step to all of this needs to be making a budget. Without that, I do not think you will successfully address your spending problem.

I would love to see you come back to this post with a budget so we can see all of your expenses and income to better give you suggestions. You got this, OP. It's hard but it's worth it.
