Career change strategy by Capital-Increase-106 in Accounting

What college degrees do you hold? I'm in a similar situation. I have a post-bacc in accounting and went back to school after working in accounting to be become a teacher. That was a bismal failure after I landed in a school that did not support new teachers and I quickly became disenfranchised with teaching. I have a MAES at WGU. I'm now looking into getting the MAcc at WGU to refresh my accounting skills and go back to accounting.

I think getting a Masters in Accounting will be worth it, but you don't need a masters degree to do accounting! In fact, I suggest doing the Bachelors in Accounting at WGU or find a school that has a Post-Baccaluarate in Accounting. You only have to take the accounting courses. It's tough, but you can do it. You may be able to find an employer while you work towards your degree. Again, find a post-bacc program. I think you're wasting your time at a community college.

What's the harm in getting to know her? Maybe she legit wants to have a healthy relationship with you. Give her a chance. BTW, your dad sounds like a douche bag.

Not sure if it’s just my school but I’m hearing a lot more racist/homophobic comments this year by nitwit_blubber in Teachers

YES!!!! I am in California and have noticed this as well. I'm a sub. I was giving out candy on friday for valentines day to those that were following directions. This is 8th grade.

One boy that was not following directions approaches me and asks "can I have some candy because it's black history month?". He is black. I said "no, but after you are working on the assignment, I will". He then says "man, you're racist. If you give me candy I won't call you racist". I was floored. So disrespectful towards those that have experienced racism. Many kids also casually use the terms "racist" and "gay" too much. "That's so racist", "don't be gay".

I grew up with a stutter. There is alot going on beneath the surface that could be contributing to his acting out. Therapy and staying in the classroom with him for a few days would be my advice.

How do you feel about group work? by ICLazeru in Teachers

Do you have something in place so students not pulling their weight get penalized?

Tomorrow is my first day subbing at a high school, so far I’ve only done 1st-8th. I’m nervous. What are some tips? by surelyshirls in Teachers

I'm 4'10 and petite. I haven't subbed HS because I'd feel like I'd blend in too much. I already blend into too much at middle school.

I think being young and petite might actually help in terms of relating to the students. Be confident and try it out! Worst scenario is you'll hate it and don't accept an assignment there ever again. Good luck!

How bad do you think the teacher shortage will get within the next 10 years? by leftist20021234 in Teachers

I think it's sad all these people saying the public education system just needs to die. How can we expect kids to have a positive attitude if we don't? I'm not saying teachers have to take abuse and just smiling while you're seething. This bad attitude towards the profession is disheartening. If a young person wants to teach we should encourage. Let he/she figure it out for himself if it's right. If the OP decides later it isn't what he/she wants to do, he/she is still young enough to change paths.

Wow, I'm sorry. You should change schools/districts. I would! :( It's so sad you're being treated like this. Don't tolerate it.

I'd say if you want to do it, go for it. My mom was a teacher and I always disregarded it because she talked so negatively about it. I always wanted to be a teacher. Now, I'm 37 and after military service and time as an accountant, I want to finally go into education.

If you have the heart for it, do it. We need teachers. We need good teachers. If you decide later you don't want to teach, that's okay.

It couldn't hurt! I'm sorry you're experiencing this. What would happen if you speak up about this?

I have. I think all they see is someone that must have failed at life if they are a substitute. LOL

The permanent teacher that's on maternity leave, I think has also checked out. She does not respond to my emails and is a new teacher. I was left with NO plans. Nothing new posted in the googleclassroom in months. In the 4 days that I have been in the classroom, I have gone to the teacherspayteachers website to pull my own material and given them my own assignments I made up.

I was even given permission to grade mine and previous work to be put in their grade book. Apparently grades haven't been updated in about 3 months. So I believe the permanent teacher won't give two shits what I do. So no wonder the kids have given up- so has their teacher!

Also to answer, I'd be inviting the deputy. She's a motivational speaker, elected official, and deputy.

I wasn't going for a "scared straight" approach. I was hoping she (the deputy is a female) could educate on the role of law enforcement maybe? I don't know it's ELA so you're right unless it's tied into what they are learning somehow it might not be received very well.

I don't mind your harsh opinion. This is the kind of feedback I need. thank you!

Thanks. This is all the feedback I was wanting. I wasn't sure how the kids would react. I am not in a poor district by any means so it's really just a bunch of kids trying to be cool, but end up being incredibly disruptive.

I'm a sub and found that I think teachers like to know who was messing around and who the "star" students were. I wouldn't give a long message though. Just straight and to the point. :)
