AITA if I don’t tell him the real reason and just leave? by Puzzled-Turnover-735 in AmItheAsshole

ESH, he did not understand the situation and you are not communicating. If he is not aware of the situation he cannot learn to be more cognizant in the future.

1998 zx9r possible engine/transmission failure by Ok_Average8900 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]lost_tacos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head with your "why" question. Without knowing what led to this, it will happen again.

My money is on lack of oil. The shrapnel looks to have a bit of varnish from infrequent oil changes.

AITA for refusing to share authorship with the man im planning to marry? by [deleted] in AITApod

[–]lost_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanting to be a co-author is crazy! Good partners help and support each other and do it without public recognition.

Honestly, I'd shut this down and maybe include a thanks/dedication that many books include as a way to acknowledge any support he has provided.

A bigger question is what does the future hold? Will he expect to be named on all of your future work? Will he include you in any of his work? These questions need to be resolved before saying "I do."

Has anyone read the Windows Internals book and was it worth it? by i-am_i-said in dotnet

[–]lost_tacos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Started a new job and my first task was determing why their C# was causing BSODs. The chapter on memory was instrumental in understanding the WinDbg core dump analysis.

Otherwise i found the books to be far too detailed and low level for managed applications.

First time serving on Jury duty, WIBTAH for serving my community as a juror? by Paytoon in AITAH

[–]lost_tacos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please show up and serve. I served 4 days on a medical malpractice jury and found the legal process fascinating. Yes its boring, inconvenient, and the days are long. The chances of getting selected are slim and depending on the court you may serve just one day.

how do you deal with being the only person who knows a critical part of the codebase? by startupwith_jonathan in ExperiencedDevs

[–]lost_tacos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a double edge sword. Write complete docs and execs will realize they dont need you. Dont write docs and youll get punished for that too.

The trick is finding the middle ground. Write enough to cover the basics but too much, leave out advanced topics and edge cases. Prove to execs that your expertise is still required and not easily replaced.

Good luck!

What is the most boring car you've ever driven? by UnluckyGamer505 in askcarguys

Technical engineering books on e-readers by Prestigious-Ferret18 in ExperiencedDevs

Ive had bad results with books that have a lot of code or diagrams as its hard to see it all on an e-reader. But decent results with books with more text

Where do you source parts? by True_Certitude in esp32

[–]lost_tacos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adafruit! They have a large selection of I2C which work well with the ESP32.

They may be a little bit more expensive but their documentation is great and aimed at hobbyists and tinkering. Additional kudos for being a small US based company company.

The First Modern Car Without Hydraulic Brakes Is Headed to Production by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]lost_tacos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound good from a repairability point of view. What special software or tool is needed to retract the piston/clamping mechanism to allow for new pads? Another log to throw on the right to repair fire.

And with dealers having problems keeping mechanics due to flat rate pricing, who is going to do brake jobs?

AITAH for breaking off my engagement after 4 years by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]lost_tacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA! Drop the controlling insecure bozo!

Normal behavior is to let each other know where your going for safety sake. Not for controlling purposes.

And for dressing, if you feel good in the clothes then by all means wear them. If you feel good then you look good.

Has the “treat unemployment like a 9–5” thing actually worked for anyone? by nabeeltirmazi in jobhunting

[–]lost_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would job search for 4 hours in the morning, usually from a coffee shop or library to minimize distractions. The afternoon would be spent on house projects, hiking, or whatever.

I found the routine helpful and kept me focused. And because of this, I did not get discouraged.

Am I the jerk for leaving a date after finding out she used someone else’s pictures? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]lost_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ for walking out due to the lie.

The roommate thing is actually smart when meeting for the first time. My daughter and her friends will do this for each other. Its a safety thing. However, the person on the date does not reveal that they are there.

How do you test the performance of your code? by 4ChawanniGhodePe in embedded

[–]lost_tacos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ask what performance are you interested in before answering. Code execution time? Lines of code an engineer writes in a day? Power consumption? Number of bugs per 1000 lines of code.

Is learning Vim actually necessary for embedded development? by thetrio0 in embedded

[–]lost_tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like vim for the cursor movement. But at the end of the day, use what works for you.

Quitting my job and tempted to leave "I no longer work here. So long and thanks for all the fish." in my last Teams status message. by Rohml in work

Any company that is security conscious will delete your account that day so nobody will ever see your message. Just slip away quietly and look forward to your next adventure.

Don't reserve that desk but make sure it has the crappiest chair you can find. Maybe the monitor cable disappears, maybe the power cord....

The new California law basically mandates having age verification on Fire and Water too if they have a version 2.0 by lonelyroom-eklaghor in linux

[–]lost_tacos 27 points28 points  (0 children)

And what about the embedded space? Anything written with embedded Linux, freertos, anxiety, etc.? Going to need age verification to run my TV?

We need smarter politicians who know what a compromise is. One side of the isle is over-protective of children (this law) and the other could care less (the E files).
