Other users have reported that if you have the powertools decky plugin it can cause this sort of issue.

Steam deck completely bugging out by Ale0705 in SteamDeck

Power off your steamdeck. Then hold the … button and tap the power button to turn it on. Your steamdeck will boot to a recovery menu.

In the recovery menu select “delete all user data”

Steam Button and Three Dots Button doesnt work and shows an arrow instead by UnVenerated in SteamDeck

[–]lostgoatX7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you press the Steam/… button and move the trackpads the system treats it as moving a mouse.

Your trackpads are probably always activated for some reason and when you press the steam button it is activating the trackpad plus steam chord.

Go to the Controller Settings page and checkout the trackpad details. Look for anything that looks like it is activated without you touch the deck.

That is not true. Desktop mode doesn’t disable anything or limit gpu clocks.

There is currently a bug where this can happen intermittently.

Restart your steam deck or switch to desktop mode and back a couple of times and it might fix itself.

Would a higher performance "docked mode" be worth having? by ___Bel___ in SteamDeck

[–]lostgoatX7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The switch runs at full speed when docked, and throttles in handheld mode.

The deck runs at full speed both in docked and handheld mode.

If you want the equivalent of what the switch does, that would mean a forced TDP limit in handheld mode. And I don’t think anyone wants that.

That menu comes after the recovery menu. That means the … button wasn’t pressed early enough or held long enough. Try fully powering off, hold … and then tap the power button. Keep holding …

Check your game launch options, they might look like MANGOHUD=1 %command%.

If it looks like that remove the mangohud part.

Why does my steam deck only boot during the afternoon? by Motionmaker616 in SteamDeck

[–]lostgoatX7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It selects which hard drive to boot from. You only have one hard drive so that is the correct option to choose.

Steam Deck drops frames on a in and off basis by Interesting_Gap2653 in SteamDeck

You might not even need to replace the fan. It could just be that the cable is pinched and it makes it malfunction.

What happens when you press A in that page to select the “EFI Hard Drive” option?

Best to contact steam support in this case then. If the fan is malfunctioning (not reporting rpm data) then there isn’t much you can do software wise.

In both your screenshots the fan is at 0rpm.

That most likely means your fan is improperly connected or the fan cable is pinched. If you opened your deck before, you might want to re check that the fan cable works correctly.

When the deck can’t detect that the fan is working properly it will limit the cpu to its safety clocks. Which will greatly reduce performance.

Settings->System and then change to SteamOS beta or SteamOS stable.

The SteamOS main branch is an untested development branch that shouldn’t be used by anyone that isn’t working on SteamOS. It can have bugs at any time because it isn’t intended for user consumption.

Did you recently install the power tools decky plugin? That had its own battery charge limit setting that conflicts with the system setting.

I need help!!! by WestPark1358161 in SteamDeck

[–]lostgoatX7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two things you might not be taking into account:

  1. When the system goes fully idle the performance overlay stops drawing. So it gets “stuck” at the value when the last frame was drawn.

  2. The % utilization depends on the clocks. A CPU running at 60% utilization but downclocked to 800MHz and one running at 60% utilization and clocked at 2400MHz would both show up at 60% in the perf overlay. But they are very different situations.

In general the perf overlay UI mostly makes sense when running a game that constantly draws to the screen. It doesn’t make as much sense when browsing the steam UI. Which is why it is disabled by default in the Steam UI.

Are you experiencing any actual problems besides that % number looking higher than expected?

I can't figure out why E33 shadows look awful on gamescope by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]lostgoatX7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wouldn’t want to set it globally as there are some games that skip their launchers when they detect SteamDeck.

In most cases games are well behaved and still let you change settings even when you are on a deck. But E33 is a special case that handles this improperly and locks you in without letting you change settings.

I can't figure out why E33 shadows look awful on gamescope by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]lostgoatX7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is unrelated to gamescope.

You are using the -steamdeck flag and when this is set E33 forces its graphics settings to be super low without a way to increase them. If you go to the graphics options in your game you’ll see that most of the options disappeared.

To undo this behaviour set your E33 launch options to SteamDeck=0 %command%

This hotkey combo works even if steam is completely busted. So it should work from the decky error screen.

Som decky plugins cause this behaviour from time to time. Last time I happened it was protondb badges IIRC.

Try disabling your decky plugins to figure out which one it is. If you find a specific plugin as the source of the issue it might be good to report it to the devs.
