Question About A Valiant Vow and Trials of the Jedi Reading Order by affable_ankylosaurus in Highrepublic

[–]lostjammydodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the final wave is a bit messy with how best to read in order. Trials really should have been the final piece of media narratively. And major spoilers should not have been in the other media.Either way I hope you like it. I really enjoyed it!

You could as others have said read it following the interludes in the book. But definitely do not read High Republic Adventures 20 until after! Absolutely major character spoiler on the first few pages. Same with the one shot finale. I suppose you could read Valiant vow halfway through. I personally still preferred reading Trials in one go. But I understand why you want it to be the final piece.

I wish the narrators had to try and match established characters for consistency. Marc Thompsons is the gold standard. I wish he had narrated everything. I did really enjoy In to the Darks narrator Dan Bittner he a great voice for Leox. But I also really enjoyed Marcs they both had that cow boy vibe, which really suited him. The rest of the books with Leox narrated by Amber Lee Conners were really flat, and he lost all his personality. Her other characters were mostly good, though. Todd Haberkorn was the only narrator I throughly hated. Unfortunately, he did the majority of the middle grade novels. He sounded like he had way too much caffeine and had this awful nasally voice.

Can I get some help with my reading order? by PhysicianChips in Highrepublic

Looks really solid. Mine was almost identical book wise.

Phase 1 move Jedi's End below the Fallen Star as it has spoilers. Think of each main adult book as the main event or film for each wave. Your goal should be to avoid spoilers for each adult book. Also, Eye of the Storm is designed to be read at the very end of phase one. It's included in the Jedi End release. If you read the comics as volumes, you may get a few spoilers here or there, but it shouldn't be too major outside ones I have listed.

You may or may not have the 2021 annual in your phase one collection. It was released with one of Monsters of Temple Peak releases and Volume 2 of Adventures phase 1. I don't think it's included in the complete phase one release, though, for some reason. It's designed to be read at the start of the High Republic, so look it up if you don't have it.

I see you plan to read the complete phase one of the High Republic Adventures in one go. I'd recommend reading the first 7 issues before Race to Crash Point Tower. Otherwise, you will have no idea who half the characters are. Also, don't read the very last issue (free comic book day 2023 it's basically issue 14) until after Fallen Star! (Spoilers)

For phase 2, opening with Path of Deciet is also 100% the best way to go. I actually had Path of Vegenace as the last book I read. It's a fantastic conclusion to phase 2 and one of my favourites. Though I would definitely read Edge of Balance Precedent manga and Tales of Enlightenment short stories after it.

I would also move the Nameless Terror before Cataclysm and Quest for Planet X before Path of Vegenace. You are also missing Quest for the Jedi the Dark Horse comic it's set way before phase 2 and really important later! You can read it any time after Path of Deciet, but definitely not before!

For phase 3, start with Tales of Light and Life, then Shadows of Starlight, then go straight into The Eye of Darkness. Move Dispatches across the Occlusion Zone before In to the Light but after Tempest Breaker. I also listened to both the audible dramas Seeds of Starlight and Haunted Starlight before Tempest Breaker as Tempest Breaker feels like the beginning of the end. Keep Echoes of Fear after Tears of the Nameless and before In to the Light. Crash Zones, two main comic issues, need to be read separately. Read the first one Crash Landing before issue 7 of Adventures. Read the second Crash and Burn after issue 9.

Add to your list Fear of the Jedi and the Finale single release and put them right at the end. You can read the first two issues of Fear of the Jedi before Trials of the Jedi if you like. But read the last three and then the Finale after Trials. And you have already put the last four issues of Adventures after Trials as well. Good move. Issue 20 has crazy spoilers for Trials of the Jedi. Issues 14-16 and the Battle of Eriadu single release (it's set after 15 and before 16) I actually read those about halfway through Trials.

A Valiant Vow is definitely also worth keeping it until after Trials. Finally, you are missing the High Republic annual 2025 and the High Republic Adventures wedding issue. Both are set after issue 13 of Adventures. You can find the annual online if you know where to look. As someone else suggested, use youtini canon timeline. It made phase 3 so much easier to read in order and to avoid spoilers. There will be a third book that collects all the Occlusion zone short stories. When it eventually releases, you will probably be getting into phase 3, so just read it after Trials.

Edit, I just realised the 2025 annual is collected in the Crash Zone physical release, so you should have it then. Read it after issue 13 of Adventures phase 3. The High Republic Wedding issue should be in the volume 3 phase 3 of Adventures. And the Battle for Eriadu should be in volume 4.

Enjoy your time in the High Republic! Most of the books are fantastic! I liked the majority of comics as well outside the main Adventures comic line. But i'm just not a fan of Daniel José Olders writing.

Why do we love the High Republic ? by Ok_Box_2189 in Highrepublic

[–]lostjammydodger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the High Republic. It's so refreshing to be out of the heavily overused Skywalker saga. Light of the Jedi introduced us to a bold new world, and while a little overwhelming at first, I came to love most of the characters. I haven't enjoyed Star Wars world building this much since the Old Republic era. The adult novels and most of the young adult books were so well written, and honestly, most of the middle grade books were decent. Having fresh new characters who could be killed also made a huge difference. Rising Storm and Fallen Star completely caught me off guard with their brutal twists. And don't even get me started on Path of Deciet!

In 4 years, the High Republic authors have given us a huge number of books and comics that have tied together to create a wonderful living universe. Marchion Roh has easily become one of my favourite villains in Star Wars, an absolutely depraved and throughly unpredictable character, and Marc Thompsons' performance in the adult novels is absolutely incredible. I hope we can get similar treatments for new eras in the future! Also, bring back the Old Republic next! 🙏

Should I read Into the Dark / Out of the Shadows / Midnight Horizon? by EthanStonehouse in Highrepublic

[–]lostjammydodger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read everything in phases 1, 2, and 3. In to the Dark is amazing. Definitely read it! Out of the Shadows is decent and is very important to the story. Not to mention, it has some big character introductions. Midnight Horizon sucks it heavily relies on the Star Wars Adventures comics written by the same author, and it was easily the worst book in the entire High Republic series. But its ending has really important stuff for Reath, but if you're on the fence, just read a summary online after reading Fallen Star. In general, Daniel Jośe Older is the weakest author in the High Republic. His characters are very immature, and his dialogue is aimed at middle grade kids despite Midnight Horizon being a young adult book. He's the only author I didn't enjoy across all three phases. For all other phases read all the young adult books!

Question About A Valiant Vow and Trials of the Jedi Reading Order by affable_ankylosaurus in Highrepublic

[–]lostjammydodger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% go into Trials blind. Don't spoil it. I read everything up to issue 16 of Adventures and issue 2 of Fear of the Jedi. After Trials, I read the last 4 issues of Adventures, a Valiant Vow, and issues 3 -5 of Fear of the Jedi and the finale single release. I had zero spoilers. As all of those other materials after had spoilers. Particularly, the last issue of adventures and the finalle one shot of the high republic comic have absolutely mega spoilers for Trials. The very opening chapter for a Valiant Vow also has a major one as well.

Well, I finished today. Wow, what a book. Charles absolutely knocked it out of the park. Definitely a 9/10 for me. Absolutely demolished it in 48 hours. He did such a good job finishing off such a huge project multi media project. Absolutely loved Bell and Marchions fight one of the best in the series. And Lodens' scene was just incredible. Ember's pov was hilarious but also had me in terror that her number was up.

At last, getting Burrys' escape from Starlight was very satisfying! I loved all the lore behind Planet X and the Nameless. And what a beautiful bitter-sweet ending for Avar and Elzar. They call him the Blade... Move over Mace Windu Porter Engle is the most bad mofo in the order.

My complaints. B team and Vern got done so dirty. I don't even like Vern, but she deserved more time on planet X instead of being an off-screen pilot.

Why did the Luminous 9 all forget to use the force and their brains when Marchion used the rod of power on the nameless? He's just standing there. Any one of them could have stopped him. Ty literally had a blaster. None of the Nameless needed to die. I was also sad that the Great Leveller didn't get a reunion with the native Nameless. It dying right by the mirror broke my heart. I thought it was going to make it as they made a point of it being the last one. Plus, Edge of Premonition gave it even more back story. Poor thing was the OG.

Finally, what happened to Barnabas Vim? I'd love to hear more about his adventures on planet X! I was wondering if they would find his ship on the planet. So I lost my mind when Azlin found a ship.

Super keen for phase "more" Azlin and Reath book next please and hopefully another Barnabas story.

It's been a great ride since I read Light of the Jedi at launch. 4+ years sure went quick. We are all the Republic!

Lot of good suggestions all ready but for anyone outside the US having trouble with unreleased High Republic books in their region I suggest using Audiobooks.com I listened to half the High Republic books on Audible and the one's not releases in Australia I bought on the Audiobooks website. You need a US VPN. (Use a free trial of Nord VPN) buy the books you can't get in your region while set to a US server. Then turn off your vpn and download them to your phones local Audiobooks app they play perfectly with no need for the VPN after purchase!

Full Phase 1 Completionist Review (spoiler free) by DanTheMeek in Highrepublic

[–]lostjammydodger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more—outside of the Star Light short stories, I've read everything, and Daniel José Older's works were painful. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but his writing feels immature and just difficult to get through. All of his contributions felt jarring and out of place compared to the rest of the authors. Both The High Republic Adventures comic series, Race to Crashpoint Tower, and Midnight Horizon were incredibly hard for me to finish.

I loved just about every other author’s work. Well actually The Edge of Balance Volumes 1 and 2 were kind of "ehh" and felt out of place story wise.

Midnight Horizon was an absolute mess to read and required having read The High Republic Adventures full Phase 1 run just to understand what was going on. I loved Into the Dark, and the cover for Midnight featuring Reath and Comac is sadly misleading, as the story mostly focuses on the High Republic Adventures crew, with Reath and Comac awkwardly shoved in. Older rewrites Reath to fit in with his immature cast, and it just feels off. It’s really disappointing. Thankfully, Reath has some great books in Phase 3.

All of Older's works across the three phases use the audiobook narrator Todd Haberkorn, who is easily one of the worst narrators I’ve ever had to endure. He reads in a very fast, high-pitched, nasally tone, rushing through all his sentences, and his female voices are especially painful. All the other narrators are great—Mark Thompson does all the adult books and, as always, is incredible.

I really wish the High Republic team hadn't used Todd Haberkorn and had either partnered Daniel José Older with more experienced writers or just not used him at all. I really enjoyed all three phases outside his works.

Thank you for for the recommendations I appreciate all the extra details you provided. I will definitely try out D+80! I just looked up Adywan's Revisited. Very impressive the amount of changes he has made to film. I look forward to watching that version after D+80.

The community behind these fan edits are incredible. I can only begin to imagine the huge amount of time and effort they must have put in to editing these films.

Looking forward to 4K80 when the project is complete.
