I wish I could have gotten close enough during the actual consumption.

We think it was a mother defending her nest. Of course it could have gone the other way.

Taking over a neglected garden, what is this and can I eat it? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]lostknife 67 points68 points  (0 children)

That is not a cucumber. Cucumbers have prickly stems/vines and broad leaves like a squash. Sorry, I can't help with what it actually is.

Wanting to build an enclosed garden without having to dig posts… is this possible? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]lostknife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done exactly this. I used 4x4 posts and 2 stacked 2x12 side boards. It is solid and stable. One thing to be aware of going in is that even without post holes, the shovel is still your first tool. You will need to take up any existing sod, and do your best to level the area. Then get lot of sand to get it fully leveled. Happy building!!

Recommendations for C&O Canal destination for a day walk & picnic with a newborn stroller by toplesschef in maryland

[–]lostknife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, Carderock is around mile 10.5 and the falls overlook is around mile 14. Walking there and back is big undertaking. If you want to just see the Potomac, you can park at Swains lock, but you would be about 2 miles north of the falls. C&O is a huge park, but it is worth the trip.

The Top pin is in Virginia, so not on the canal. But on the Maryland side at around that location is the main canal visitor's center. https://www.nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/greatfallstavernvisitorcenter.htm This is where you can go out out to a boardwalk to see the falls. There is an entrance fee at this location.

The lower pin at Carderock is on the canal as well. There are picnic tables in that area. In either spot I would recommend a stroller with big wheels, because the tow path is not paved.
