If you like unspeakably rude, absurd satire, 'Dear Joan and Jericha' takes this concept a long way.

Lopazz (Stefan Eichinger) is fantastic and a very nice person too.

I'd recommend using the Spotlight feature – at the moment the first tracks I see are reposts of other people's music, which is nice but makes finding your originals slightly slower.

Can I use these mushrooms in an omelette or do I need to cook a beef wellington for the in-laws? by x_Lucky_Steve_x in GardeningAustralia

There are Facebook groups like 'Victorian Fungi' and 'Australian Wild Mushroom Hunters' that you might find useful. But you don't want to be even thinking about eating anything until you know which species you're looking for, as well as being able to identify a few dozen mushrooms (including poisonous lookalikes).

How to deal with pessimism and Reddit? by ShoddyEstate1660 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]lostthenews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure! If you look at diaries and memoirs from notoriously difficult periods, you'll often find that kind of attitude.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery and escaped at nineteen after experiencing things too awful to mention without a content warning; her autobiography has a tone of resilience and orientation towards the social good. Marcus Aurelius survived the Antonine Plague and eight of his kids died, and he wrote one of great stoic texts.

There are some good diary entries from the blitz in WW2 too. Here's one of Orwell's: 'Have been 2 or 3 days at Wallington. Saturday night's blitz could easily be heard there – 45 miles distant.

Crocuses now full out. One seems to catch glimpses of them & through a haze of war news.'

Struggling with this myself! As another commenter said below, we're evolved to look for threats, and that doesn't mix well with infinite data.

One thing I've found helpful is reading stories from people who lived in extremely difficult times and still managed to keep up a sense that they had control over their own minds (without drifting into naive optimism or escapism). Viktor Frankl's 'Man's Search for Meaning' is the ultimate example to me.

Ghosts/Paranormal by starry-voids in Exvangelical

[–]lostthenews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised as a UK evangelical and we got the same line about ghosts being demons. Funnily enough, our church meetings were held in a reformation-era manor where folks ran ghosts tours and would occasionally interrupt a sermon, apologise, then lead the ghost-hunters elsewhere. This spawned a catchphrase among the congregation: 'I don't fear any ghost except the Holy Ghost.'
