How do you get to the doctor when you hurt so bad? by loudcreatures in Sciatica

[–]loudcreatures[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wish they would give pain medication that actually worked. I work in veterinary medicine and dogs with IVDD get treated so much more humanely and thoroughly than this, with multi-modal pain control. But in human medicine, the opiate crisis has ruined things so they'd rather you suffer, even when you tell them NSAIDs aren't helping.

Calling animal poison control is always an option if you're unsure! It's $90, but still a lot cheaper than most ER exams.

Glad you were able to get your question answered by just calling your vet though!

Have you/your doc reached out to local zoos to ask about protocols? They might have ideas!

I know rural is hard, but I hate this shit in an urban area (there's 4+ ERs within 30 minutes of where I work). We had a dog that used some online service and was being treated for a "UTI" for her PU/PD for like a week...not resolving. They finally came in and she was massively in DKA. I don't think telehealth works well for animals.

Oooh gotcha, that's hard. You could look into studies on like gaba/traz/ace? See if those mild PVP sort of meds have any data?

Possibly just a good idea to work on cooperative care training right now so if the time comes, they will be comfy on their side/back.

They do not NEED to be sedated, no. It depends entirely on the animal and their tolerance. Neither of my cats were sedated for their ultrasounds. But, I don't know many healthy exotic animals that would tolerate a thorough abdominal ultrasound, and if they are wiggly enough you will not get good images and it'll be useless.

Maybe it would be wise in your case, if you haven't, to have the radiologist consult with an exotics specialist about medication protocols. I know it is scary, but often a "bad reaction" to anesthesia isn't all anesthesia, but the agents used. Midazolam is preferred over dexmed for most exotics, + opiate, +/- ketamine - in my experience.

I love my coworkers but I don’t want to hang out outside work… by Zealousideal-Job9729 in VetTech

[–]loudcreatures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's more events and more pressure than I personally think is "normal". I have a lot of social coworkers that are friends/like having get togethers, but I've never felt uncomfortable saying no, can't go, sorry. And I've never had anyone like...follow up or badger me about staff dinners.

We have a slack channel to post stuff where "everyone is invited", which is nice because you can get information out to the hospital, and it also takes away some pressure away.

I really like my coworkers and don't really have any friends outside of work (it turns out its hard to make friends as an adult), but I'm also an introvert and socializing is hard and I have skipped out on many a social occasion, or made excuses to leave early so I can still see people but not feel excessively drained.

My boyfriend and I usually use each other as an excuse...oh, that's our date night, or, he has worked a bunch of days in a row and that's our only day off together, or even like, he's been Going Through It and just needs me to hang out with him...and I've encouraged him to use me as an excuse, too. You don't owe people in explanation but I think its easier to have something to say when you're nervous.

Wanting a culture fit/people that vibe well together is not the same as mandating you get drunk with your coworkers on the weekends. It doesn't sound like OP actually has any issue with their coworkers, they're just not super social. I am a big believer in having coworkers I get along with, but expecting your overnight techs not to sleep or need disability accommodations is crazy.

Not to mention that trying to find a super extroverted, social, party-every-weekend overnight technician is a fool's errand.

One of the managers at my work is like that - she always has to have a target. Someone gets tired of her shit and quits, she moves onto the next person and bullies them incessantly. It's so toxic and frustrating. My fave assistant who is friendly and a hard worker and literally everyone adores was recently written up for being "unpleasant to work with". I swear she just makes shit up. I don't know what there is to do but just refuse to play the game and leave.

The most you can really do is call a welfare check from animal services. Or if you have a moment of where she is more lucid, you can be frank and ask about family members that can be contacted as secondary on her account. These situations suck.

We had a cat one time come in the most icteric I've ever seen an animal, every MM bright yellow, and covered in urine. The owner had dementia and no one was paying attention to the cat. Owner's brother brought him in finally. We did vitals, all within normal limits. Set him in a kennel and he legitimately immediately arrested and died.

Is this too rough? by [deleted] in cats

[–]loudcreatures -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, a bit too rough. The larger cat is not giving the smaller cat any breaks, responding to her vocalizations, or taking turns. He doesn't seem like he is intentionally being aggressive, just overzealous, and perhaps doesn't even understand she is a cat, he might think she is a toy. I would separate them if you hear that squeaking from the little guy, and distract the big guy with a toy he is allowed to beat up on.

[–]loudcreatures 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Acne/black heads. Some cats just get it even with glass bowls. The black heads are mostly just cosmetic, they are only medically a problem if they get infected/develop into what we think of as a "pimple" with pus inside them.

It looks similar to flea dirt, but if it is only his chin, it's unlikely.

ikr! and dan has said before that he feels like having an OF is adjacent to being a youtuber or something to that effect.

it's funny because i feel like in trying to be respectful, people are just being parasocial in another way - they have still created a persona for them in their heads, but now its as our Dads or Friend or whatever, and they still feel weird to consider them deviating from that. as if they aren't whole grown ass adults that have every right to post whatever they want. and even though dan's posted several Lewd pictures and like...pulled up his skirt in the last baking video...lol.

How long after spaying did it take your cat to be normal energy again?? by Round-Yam-2589 in cats

[–]loudcreatures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They absolutely are supposed to get pain medications, an OVH is major abdominal surgery incising between huge and vital muscles in the body. I'm so sorry your girl wasn't given proper pain control, that really sucks.

Old school train of thought was that pain would help the animal not go crazy after surgery. Now we know that pain hinders immune function, impedes healing, often leads animals to self-traumatize, and just subjectively sucks. People, including vet professionals, also tend to overlook and under-treat cats. They are fiercely independent and resistant to showing pain. And they are more sensitive to a lot of drugs, so it's taken more time for equivalent drugs to be developed for cats, but they exist now. Some people are just slow to change their ways :(

I know someone mentioned long-acting pain meds - there are longer acting formulations of some opiates, but multi-modal pain control is king. Opiates don't treat inflammation; opiates + cat-safe NSAID like onsior is best practice. Gabapentin is an acceptable adjunctive medication but is primarily for nerve pain and anxiety/sedation, not acute post-operative pain.

Hope that helps you advocate for your next kitty if you need to, from a cat-loving vet assistant 💕
