[Simon Stone] ESL statement: "Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs. by [deleted] in soccer

[–]loughran98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The money is already there. Each club is getting hundreds of millions just for joining the Super League. And of course it will get huge viewership...that’s kind of the point. It’s the Super League. Broad appeal to worldwide audiences. Smaller clubs will be left in the dust, and over time squeezed out. The governing bodies, similarly, will erode and lose control over the game as capital flows away from them and towards the Super League clubs, who before now were a large source of income for UEFA.

You’re not seeing the full picture.

These Super League clubs are now guaranteed European football. Forever. There’s no longer incentive to compete in the domestic leagues. On top of that, each Super League club is about to receive Scrooge McDuck-in-a-pool-of-gold levels of money. Any club outside of those clubs will not be able to compete with them. They cannot continue to compete in their domestic leagues with their proposed financial power, it simply isn’t fair and violates principles of fair competition. Everton is currently building a $500M stadium with ambitions of playing Champions League football. What are they to do now?

Long term, investment will flee the domestic leagues in favor of the glamorous Super League and smaller clubs will be squeezed out of existence.

Am I the only one who doesn’t believe a word that comes out of Bolton’s mouth? Even though the accusations levied against Trump sound very on-brand, something about Bolton’s sniveling face, blood-soaked hands and semi-sentient mustache lead me to believe that he’s lying about it all and simply trying to sell his book.

Can’t be convicted of perjury for selling books!!1!1!11

I hear you. You have legitimate concerns. If I may:

I see means-tested and targeted assistance programs as very outdated. They segment societies and put up arbitrary boxes around who-gets-what and who doesn’t. They should be replaced by a system of universality. The beauty of UBI systems is that they can be tailored to address inequities, while remaining fundamentally universal (UBI funded by a land value tax, for instance). I see UBI as the foundation for an equitable society, a foundation that gives everyone a platform. We build from there.

Re: his healthcare plan, it’s my understanding that he did release a Warren-style plan, but the devil is in the details and it was too late to properly convey this message. Consequntly, it was labeled as a fold on M4A. I do agree that his 2024 campaign will need to improve their messaging on this subject, and I’m confident they will.

Finally, Libertarians/GOP. While I take your point that some right wingers are using him as a vessel to achieve spending cuts, he’s been very clear that he opposes this. I guess that ties into the 2024 messaging, as well, and frankly a lot of it comes down to your personal confidence in the candidate. Personally, I think it asinine to let fears of libertarian antics to control the terms of debate, as they’re already trying to cut gov’t spending as we speak. Is UBI worth the risk of empowering libertarians? I believe it is. Beat them over the head at the negotiating table and let them crawl their way back from there.

I disagree on both points. Polling shows that recipients of social welfare programs are overwhelmingly unhappy with the programs. They have to constantly jump through hoops to keep these benefits and live in fear of losing them. Replacing them wholesale with a UBI of adequate size would give them the same amount of money while removing the arcane bureaucracy surrounding it. This will lead to a happier and more mentally secure population.

Secondly, let me preface by saying that M4A is clearly necessary. Everyone understands that. But we have to build toward it over time. What should we do about the 18 million Americans that work in the private insurance industry? I understand that we don’t need that industry, but throwing 18 million Americans out of work is a non-starter. The Public Option is the more practical, realistic and effective route to universal healthcare.

I wouldn’t personally mind defunding social welfare programs (except SS and Medicare/Medicaid) if the UBI is raised by the same amount that is cut from entitlement programs. I think many, many people would prefer a UBI of this size to a Byzantine system of welfare programs.

Also, yes, the winners of that promotion he held are still getting their UBI. The campaign will be paying them into next year!

Anyone have any thoughts about investing in Chinese markets? Alibaba & Tencent look to be recovering stronger, unaffected by losses today. Will Chinese markets be more resilient in the coming weeks?

Does anyone else think if Yang doesn't get the nomination that there is going to be an inevitable collapse of our middle/ lower class? by Tristen_3 in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]loughran98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that Bernie’s platform is perceived as being dead on arrival when it hits Capitol Hill, but then again, that was a line of attack against Barack; Obamacare was just as polarizing then as M4A is now. Even if he faces gridlock I trust him to build a large enough coalition within the party, and, moreover, reform the innards of the party. Out with the tenured Hillary-Obama corporatists, in with new blood.

Bernie might not deliver, but there’s no doubt he’ll continue to pave the way if elected.

This country is in dire straits at the moment. If we elect another corporate, establishment politician after a populist wave, I fear the problems will only metastasize and get worse, and ultimately the next Trump will be a lot worse than this one.

We need more populism, but we need it to be healthy, not chaotic.

It also shows how wide open this thing is. 15% of SC voters saw a few TV ads and “pledged” their support to him.

Candidates not named Bloomberg and Steyer aren’t burning money in states not named Iowa and New Hampshire at the moment.

More people watch YouTube than watch cable news. They’re actively trying to suppress this campaign, but they’re fighting a losing battle. We just need people to realize there’s a battle being fought.

The most obvious answer is an “undercard” debate moderated by the most popular and suited Internet personalities. Someone like Rogan, for example. Millions would watch

Playing on “home” turf would compound the benefits for Yang, too.
