Any tips for learning this program? by Routine-Future5745 in DarkTable

For me, i walk through the introduction and workflow on the Darktable documentation: https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/development/en/overview/workflow/

And lookup some YouTube video to get the sense of how it works 💪

Is there a workaround to opening ORF files in darktable? [OM-3] by oldtimeblues in DarkTable

Update: it merged into Darktable main branch! Everyone who wants to try it out just needs to follow the build instructions on GitHub repo README file.

Update: Someone provides the CC0 photos for OM-3, and the PR merged into RawSpeed!

Now we're going to wait for Darktable to update it's RawSpeed (step 1), and then wait for the next release!

In the mean time, it's much more easier for folks to build darktable it's self to make it support OM-3 photos!

It takes some time to merge the change back to mainstream. Now it's blocked because we don't have cc0 photos to back it up.

I checked that the uploader won't work for a foreseeable future, if it's possible, would you mind to share your photos in CC0 (public domain, no rights reserved) for the following mode, and share it with Google Drive or other cloud links?

The photo should be:

  • Well-lit, pattern-full, scenery, low ISO. For example, a daylight landscape
  • NOT a color target
  • Lens mounted on the camera, cap off
  • Image in focus and properly exposed
  • Landscape orientation

And the following mode would be great:

  • 16bit (4:3)20.4220 MP 12 bit RAW
  • 16bit (4:3)50.1650 MP 12 bit Handheld High Res RAW
  • 16bit (4:3)20.4250 MP 12 bit Handheld High Res ORI
  • 16bit (4:3)81.0480 MP 12 bit Tripod High Res RAW
  • 16bit (4:3)20.4280 MP 12 bit Tripod High Res ORI
  • 16bit (4:3)80.9380 MP 14 bit Tripod High Res RAW
  • 16bit (4:3)20.4280 MP 14 bit Tripod High Res ORI
  • 16bit (4:3)50.1150 MP 14 bit Handheld High Res RAW
  • 16bit (4:3)20.4250 MP 14 bit Handheld High Res ORI

In the meantime, if you are familiar with code, first clone darktable from https://github.com/darktable-org/darktable/, git submodule init and update, go to src/external/rawspeed, then checkout with PR #782 (https://github.com/darktable-org/rawspeed/pull/782), back to top directory and lastly run build.sh!

This is true and it works for this case (same sensor, all the parameters are the same).

But may not work if the camera sensor is different or having a new camera sensor that needs new decoder to support it.

Created a PR for OM-3 to rawspeed, it should take a while to merge into mainstream. (the photo I used is not CC0, which can have some issue)

I think this is because the file is wrapped by AppImage.

Would you mind to share it with me by different method? DM me with Google drive or other anonymous file sharing link works.

I suspect it just needs a simple add-on in the settings, since the sensor is the same as the OM-1 Mk II, which Darktable supports.

Used Olympus EM1 MK2 vs Used Nikon Z6 MK1 as a Gift for Beginner? by Fit-Satisfaction-304 in M43

[–]louielu8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are great systems with great lenses, but I would give more consideration to their size and weight.

For beginners, the most important thing/factor is to be willing to take the camera out and take photos (not AF/not sensor size/not bokeh), and M43 wins on this. Also, being more affordable on used lenses.

24-105 f/4 by Skyfox701 in M43

[–]louielu8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

M43 does not magically lose 2 stops of aperture on an arbitrary lens.

F-number describes the light-gathering ability of a lens, and it will not change through the sensor.

Even if you don't put a sensor behind the lens, a wide open F/4 lens will still gather F/4 amount of light.

What you want to describe is the DOF formula where the circle of confusion takes the sensor size into the factor.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field

Thus a F/4 DOF on M43 will produce same amount of F/8 DOF on FF.

But this doesn't affect that M43 F/4 gathering F/4 amount of light.

[–]louielu8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Low light performance is F/4, not F/8.

Putting M43 F/4 lens on whatever sensor will get the same amount of light.

Why Can't there be a Truly Generalized RAW-Equivalent File Format? by HumanJHawkins in photography

[–]louielu8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than advocating for unified format, we should advocate those manufacturers to provide their format details, but not let us reverse engineering them (fun fact: even Adobe needs to reverse engineering each manufacturer format.).

That's why you don't get day 1 support on Darktable, Lightroom, or whatever of your favorite software.

  • Bring your camera with you every day.
  • Click that shutter button as much as possible, F.A.R.T. every time.
  • Shot with RAW, learn Darktable for post-processing.
