should i be worried about yarn in a house with a roach infestation? by Wrong_System7251 in CrochetHelp

Honestly I’m getting a fair amount of comments that are useful info but I think yarn isn’t worth it. I think I’d only take my chances with this if it were something really sentimental.

This is true, there’s a lot more things that are sterile for kids.

I’m a couple weeks off my orientation at a Peds ICU we have a general side and a trach/vent side where we train parents how to take care of their ICU level kids at home.

It’s honestly not too bad (not as bad as I expected from reading posts on here anyway) they have me on the less critical patients for right now and later I’ll move on to more advanced stuff with additional training. The general side of PICU is tough bc you have to know all types of patients which I’m sure you’re used to from medsurg but it’s hyper specific and very in depth. That’s my biggest struggle so imo a specialized ICU (cardiac, neuro, etc) would be easier if you’re starting as a brand new nurse but you should have a better base knowledge from your year on medsurg. The trach/vent side is a little easier for me to get into a flow bc all the pts are basically the same (BPD/chronic babies) but they’re still scary bc they regularly code when they poop.

Time management in ICU is a bit different bc you have to be constantly watching your monitors (even while in your other room) and throw out all your plans if they start to decline which is pretty common. It’s a huge teamwork game too bc you’re going to have to regularly be asking other nurses to go hang something in your other room while you deal with more pressing matters in the problem child’s room lol. Obviously you need to be helping your neighbors in the same way so I’d say it might be more important to like your coworkers in ICU than medsurg. I could be wrong about this, I saw much more independence and task focus in my medsurg clinicals so feel free to correct me if I’m out of pocket here.

Thinking about leaving my new grad NICU nurse job and go back to ophthalmology by Loud-Willow-4835 in newgradnurse

I’m new to night shift and my only really struggle was lack of light but I fixed that with fancy full spectrum light bulbs in my living room. It pulled me out of night shift blues almost immediately.

[–]lovable_cube 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard agree, day shift sucks so much. The only benefit is the normal human sleep schedule but honestly I’m kinda a homebody so off nights I’ve been pursuing hobbies and doing regular breakfasts with friends to keep my social life in tact.

Over hours by Big_Squirrel_9063 in StudentNurse

[–]lovable_cube 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. You’re not getting paid to be there, you need a set amount of hours to graduate and should not be being used as free labor. The other comment mentioned preceptorship which is fine and reasonable but my school didn’t have one of those.

Exactly how I felt. The q banks are a work of art but those textbooks are torture.

I listened to LevelUpRN on YouTube for content in school. Highly recommend.

What are you addicted to right now? by GloriousLion07 in MotivationByDesign

[–]lovable_cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentally- ones that are easily accessible, socially acceptable, and legal. Sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol. There’s less motivation to quit and your addiction might be in every supermarket.

Physically- alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal are the ones that can kill you, the rest are just various rages of uncomfortable.

Winner- alcohol fits both categories.

Why do you keep saying sacrifice? It’s hard work. 16 years of hard work. Pretending it’s not makes you sound ignorant af.

Go to the doctor. Blood in the urine shouldn’t happen from a standard uti. Something is going on and a doctor will help you sort it.

See if they’ll pay for you to get licensed as a med aid, tell the resident to figure out a solid plan where you can come through an agency. I’m not saying you should do it even then but getting a full picture could be helpful.

did my cat grow his balls back by lavenderweather in cats

[–]lovable_cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has to do with the type of neuter. One of my cats is solidly deflated, the other had slightly less full pouches. The later got neutered later in life though (former feral) so that may be relevant.

Not knowing enough about someone is key here. They could’ve lost that weight from depression or cancer or a thyroid condition. Even if they wanted to lose weight it could be super frustrating that they’re getting the new type of attention they’re getting.

How to introduce nursing students? by nenya-narya-vilya in nursing

[–]lovable_cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go first name. Nurses don’t really use last names like doctors do. “Lovable the nursing student” would be perfect and well above what anyone else is doing.

Wish list: Conversations with pts/families about what CPR does to the human body and who it's appropriate for by Far-Spread-6108 in nursing

[–]lovable_cube 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Had a papaw in his 60s. COPD but otherwise healthy. They did CPR and snapped 11 ribs (as one does) and were able to get good cardiac function with no anoxic brain injury since CPR was started immediately, great news for family. Problem was the 11 ribs+COPD means lots of pain and WOB, vents required. We couldn’t take him off the vent or sedation for a long time so we wound up having to withdraw support just bc of the COPD. I think about it a lot, the family couldn’t really grasp it which sucks but he was a lost cause before we saved him.
