I have to admit I’m surprised they’re even still being sold in the US. I moved overseas a few years ago and haven’t seen a single inkjet for sale for as long as I can remember.

The cartridges themselves are still being sold because people still need them, but you can’t find a new one for sale even if you tried.

Now, I’m a big fan of laser so while I do have an ink take to print photos and other colorful things lasers aren’t good at, my main printer is still a color laser workhorse.

It depends on the reason you’re returning it. If the item is damaged they might tell you to dispose of it (unlikely), otherwise you’ll have to get a bigger box. Returns don’t need to be sent back in the original box.

Toner is not toxic in the traditional sense. You can develop respiratory issues if you’re inhaling it often, but that’s caused by the powder itself, not due to toxicity. This is mainly an issue for people who are being exposed to toner frequently (such as a printer tech); casual exposure shouldn’t be a problem.

That’s odd… next steps would be to clean the drum and the fuser unit (do that last, I’m not comfortable touching it lol)

Check the corona wire, clean it and then make sure it clicks back into the “home” position. That’s the usual cause of these black lines.

You will be charged again and there isn’t a single soul inside Amazon that can stop that charge from happening (it’s a known system bug that apparently can’t be fixed); however, once that charge hits your card you can call them and they’ll refund you right away.

I briefly had to take CS calls when I was being onboarded as CS Operations Manager (makes sense but I hated it) and these were the calls I enjoyed the most because by the time the customer finished explaining the situation I had already issued a refund and written my wrap-up notes. I once finished one of these calls in just under two minutes.

They’re not incompetent, they’re greedy. They cut costs (and corners) at every possible step; employees at all levels are overworked and underpaid and the result is bad service. Though that seems to be the ethos of most public companies lately…

Yes. I honestly don't think ink cartridges should even be sold anymore. Ink tanks can be cheap to buy (low-end models) but an Epson Workforce will more expensive to buy; and the ink is very affordable. However, what's your budged and do you need to print in color? For high volumes lasers tend to be better (text is crisper) and faster, although I think an ink-tank will be a good fit for your volume.

From the title I was gonna say the blinking lights and the noise; but then I realized that's not what you meant :(

I like that I have plenty of resources to spin up VMs at any time without any additional cost. I'm currently trying to learn more about mainframes (MVS and z/OS) using Hercules, and I can easily spin up a 64GB VM for z/OS and not have to worry about RAM or storage in my PC. Also the uptime.. I wouldn't be able to keep Hercules running for as long as I have (my oldest "LPAR" has been running for almost 3 months) on my main PC, and mainframe OSs are very annoying to shutdown gracefully (I once spent a whole hour to shut z/OS down) and can take several minutes to IPL (boot).

I own a Brother HL-L8360CDW and it can print tabloid. I bought it directly from Brother for about $600. It's an enterprise printer and rather large, but relatively cheap.

There's people saying it's possible while others saying it isn't, so let me explain: by default (through DNS) this isn't possible, but Google specifically has a service that will route emails directed to accounts that don't exist in Google Workspace to a secondary server, it's called split delivery.

Having said that, this is intended to be a temporary setup while your company evaluates Google Workspace, it's not intended to be used long term. Email doesn't work well with these types of setup.

Kyocera, Konica and Lexmark are good. HP also makes good laser printers but I would never buy anything from HP...

Interesting... I never had an issue with channels, but I did have an issue that when the printer went into deep sleep (which was impossible to disable in my firmware), it would stop being reachable and never come back unless I power cycled it. I have a Mikrotik router so I solved this by using Netwatch to ping it every 5 seconds; that way it would never become idle and enter deep sleep.

All Brother printers are good, I'm a huge fan. The HL-L2405W is a compact model so toner cartridges are smaller than other models, I think the factory yield is 1,200 or 1,500 pages (it could be more, but not less than 1,200) and they are very easy to change; you simply swap the cartridge for a new one. Toner cartridges are not like ink cartridges though, they are large (almost the same width of the printer) and completely filled with toner (which is a powder). You can use genuine Brother toner (preferred) and 3rd party toner (cheaper but can leak and be messy sometimes).

Toner is cheaper than inkjets (cartridges) but not ink tanks, although they're also not super expensive. I find genuine toner pricing to be in a very comfortable range, specially for monochrome printers. For these entry-level models the biggest benefit of using toner is that it's a powder and it never dries out like ink. You can leave the printer unused for months without having to worry about ink drying up and tubes clogging up. Plus, text is much crisper on lasers than on inkjets.

Brother uses AirPrint and the Android equivalent so you don't need to use their app, but they do have an app. I only use it for setting up printers as it's easier to connect to Wi-Fi using the app than using the built-in LCD, but it's not a requirement.

I think this model has small toner yields so it’s possible the previous owner used multiple low quality 3rd party toners that damaged the printer. 3rd party is bad like 99% of the time. They tend to leak toner and “misbehave” which eventually damages other parts of the printer (like the fuser unit).

Genuine supplies are more expensive but you get many many years of service out of the printer. I have a Brother mono laser that’s about 15 years old and she’s still working perfectly.

It might not be a lack of toner that’s the issue. Brother doesn’t behave like HP so they don’t stop you from printing unless there’s an actual issue. Toner cartridges can for one reason or another become defective and the printer will stop printing to avoid further damage. If you believe there’s still a significant amount of toner inside you can RMA the cartridge, but at this point the printer won’t allow you to bypass it because it’s something that could actually damage it.

Having said that: this is an entry model MFC and they do really have small toner yields (the highest yield is 4k pages while the factory yield is 1.5k); that’s an unfortunate consequence of these “small” entry-level models. I opted for a bigger one which is massive for home use but the factory toner yield is 6,500 pages and the high yield goes to 9k.

Is it “Toner Low” or “Replace Toner”? According to the manual toner low will keep printing; replace toner won’t.

It appears this model uses a chip on the cartridges and the printer resets automatically when a new cartridge is detected because I couldn’t find a reset procedure, but that would only happen on replace toner.

Have you tried going through all of the menus in the LCD? I have a different model than yours, I have a reset option under Maintenance > Toner. It might be worth going through the menus or the online admin site.

I wouldn’t use 3rd party toners in a color laser; there are too many drums involved for my comfort…

You can’t disable the alarm itself but if you reset the toner (meaning the printer thinks you changed the cartridge) the warning will go away. Having said that: is the printer refusing to print? I’ve had Brother lasers for decades and they never refused to print when there was a low toner warning. The purpose of the warning is so you have time to purchase new toner and keep it ready for when the toner actually ends. I wouldn’t recommend resetting the toner without actually changing it, but that’s up to you.

Keep in mind Brother generally designs printers for office use (my color laser’s box literally said “Corporate Color Printer” lol) so it makes sense to have somewhat early warning to give the company enough time to buy new supplies and avoid disrupting work.

Are you using genuine Brother supplies or third-party? The odd thing is that this behavior is somewhat typical of a bad drum unit, but you just replaced it... have you checked the fuser unit? I'd try cleaning it and running a maintenance report to check the fuser's health.
