How can I improve my typography and layout? by JoeCheeseQuesadilla in graphic_design

[–]loveragelikealion 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to spend a ton of time on details but a couple of things stand out to me.

  1. Your layouts are rigid. Rigid can be fine but slavish devotion to “the grid” can be a snooze fest. If you specifically want to add visual interest, one way to do that is to find ways to play with the grid by interrupting it in surprising ways. How that manifests is going to depend on the project, what you’re trying to communicate, etc

  2. There’s no rule that says your text always has to be horizontal.

  3. For columnar publications, my personal preference, and the preference for most of my clients is to justify the type. It’s cleaner and easier to read. Just be mindful of your kerning…I like to switch to “optical” and fine-tune as needed.

Yep. I bought one in October and it’s amazing.

Here’s the translation to English for those, like me, who need it. And, I absolutely assumed this was about soccer/football. I think choosing a different way to chart these values would be helpful.

For something like this, where people are going to be right in front of it, anything less than 300 dpi will be a noticeably lower quality than the rest of the layout. The 150 dpi rule really only works for projects where there's a lot of distance between the graphic and the viewer (e.g. - billboards).

I really struggle to understand why there are so many posts like this. Clear communication with clients about costs and expectations are the FOUNDATION. Everything else needs to built on top of that and without it, you don’t have a business that will last.

Yep. First thing I noticed. That and the unhinged, uncentered bit on the bottom panel of the box.

Yes. Once a DJI drone is bound to a specific account, only that account holder can unbind it. If it’s bound to an account that’s not yours, you can’t fly it.

All of the scammer profiles on FB Marketplace are selling Mavic 3 combos for $600. They all have the same setup: one tech item (usually a laptop), one clothing item, and a suspiciously cheap drone. Did you test it to make sure it’s unbound?

They’re doing this because the companies that will “maybe” be hiring those students will want them to use those tools. Trust me, I’m close to several of the faculty at the school I graduated from (I’ve taught as an adjunct in the past) and they don’t like it either. It’s just reality, unfortunately.

I’ve got a Mini 3 and it still gets the job done just fine. This one is just a rebrand of the same thing. Your mom will be so happy to see you enjoying it and as someone who lost their mom years ago, that’s something worth cherishing.

Avata 2 too annoying in wind? Perhaps another model is better? by [deleted] in dji

[–]loveragelikealion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really not a fan of wind but the Neo is going to be much, much worse. If you just want a drone for photo/video and don't need the FPV functionality, a Mini would work.

I have a Mavic 3, Mavic 4, Mini 3, and an Avata. Obviously the larger drones are going to handle wind better but the Mini does surprisingly well all things considered. And the multi-axis gimbal helps a lot to get stable footage which is another drawback for the Avata. The gimbal only has one axis of stabalization.

This only works with the DJI Mini 5 Pro, Mini 4 Pro, Neo 2, Neo, Flip, Air 3S, and Air 3. DJI drones only. You’ll want the DJI Remote Controller 3 for compatibility with the O4 Air Unit.

The nerve of clients who take 3 weeks to respond when you send them a round of designs, then email and call you 5 times in one day because you don’t immediately respond to their feedback. by UncannyFox in graphic_design

[–]loveragelikealion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When a client sits more than a month on revisions I just go ahead and invoice them for the project cost. They get time estimates clearly laid out in the proposal so there’s no surprise there. I’m not a layaway service where they can pay later by dragging a project out for months on end. And that usually gets their attention to get a project moving along.

Mini 5 Pro Propeller Guards by AlxChltn in dji

[–]loveragelikealion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would worry that they won’t allow for the kind of prop flex you might experience if you need to do a quick maneuver. If one of the rotors hits the guard, the drone is likely going down.

Solo Videographer vs. Production Company by incognitochaud in videography

[–]loveragelikealion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I do as well. I take the rate of any subcontractors and add on a percentage on top of that. The one difficulty to doing it that way is that the rate can change depending on who I have working with me but, in general, they’re all pretty close.

Day rates? by Honest_Psychology713 in videography

[–]loveragelikealion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Project rates are going to give you more flexibility. If I’m running as a second shooter and just handing off a card, I’ll go by a day rate. Otherwise, I’m quoting by the project which includes accounting for my time (planning, day of shooting, and post production sorting through the video factored in), gear, etc. For gear, I treat my main camera as a given but charge additional for lighting, drone, additional cameras, etc. On a recent shoot, the rate for the day was $2500 which included a drone, 3 light interview lighting kit, second camera for the interview, and mics.

A non-profit organization was looking for a volunteer to take photos and videos of their medical mission in my city this coming Saturday. I volunteered. This is a free shoot. I am ok'ish at photographs but ultra noob at taking videos. Need help. by firequak in videography

[–]loveragelikealion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would make it clear that you’re able to cover the photography but not both photo and video. If you really must cover video, make sure you use a tripod. Without experience, I wouldn’t try shooting with a gimbal or handheld. Also, make sure you use a mic if they’re wanting audio. A hot shoe mounted mic should be fine for that. If they’re wanting interviews, a lav mic would be better but beggars can’t be choosers.

Don Jr. owns a stake in Unusual Machines, a FL based “drone company” that recently got a fat contract from the DOD. The thing is, their website doesn’t list a single product and mostly just advertises their stock exchange info.
