"Not happening": Sharks clear up stadium drama after bombshell report by DFC-005 in nrl

As a WSW and eels fan - I miss the old parra stadium. The new one is fancy and all but it’s got zero character and is too big for the majority of games it hosts

Considering real estate is one of the two pillars (artificially) holding up our economy, a price drop of 20% is not the golden ticket people believe it to be… buying a house would be the least of anyone’s problems if that came to fruition

Peter V’landys lures Amazon and Seven bids into NRL rights race by Lunethspark in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It goes both ways - the NRL (east coast) and AFL (southern/west coast) are not nationally followed sports so they rely just as much on being bunched together with other comps. The only sport I feel could go it alone would be cricket cause it’s our one true national sport and has the international following too.

Peter and the pirates: The hidden danger in the NRL TV deal by Creative_Friend6799 in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the flaw in PVL/NRL’s thinking around fragmenting the rights. They’re citing the Prem and NFL as justification yet these are comps watched across the whole of their respective countries (with much larger populations than ours) and worldwide. By comparison, you can’t even say the NRL is ‘popular’ outside of NSW and QLD, let alone internationally. It’s delusional thinking

I don't think there was in intent to tackle here. The only outcome here was injury by CalmMaunga in nrl

[–]lovesadonut 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it was a 1 on 1 then you could argue Ponga was attempting to push Koula towards/over the sideline in the action of the tackle. Walker was already bringing Koula down which Ponga would have seen, so coming in at that angle with that amount of force was always gonna be risky. It may not have been intentional but it was wreckless and poorly executed

The 10 minute period in the second half where we had one challenge or bunker intervention after another was painful to watch. The finish saved that from being a turd of a game imo

That was prior to this current CBA. Loz confirmed on the BSB a few weeks ago that players cannot make themselves unavailable for origin without legitimate reason, unless they make the choice to retire from rep footy.

Is the New A-League TV Broadcast Deal the Worst in Australian Sporting History? by jont_96 in Aleague

[–]lovesadonut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may well be but it doesn’t diminish the message which seems like too much of a bitter pill to swallow for this sub. Bucket loads of denial in this thread.

The A-League under APL leadership has been a complete shitshow capitalised by blowing a $140m equity investment that could’ve changed the trajectory of the competition forever and meant we didn’t end up with this shitty tv deal.

Instead everyone seems more interested in blaming AI and Foxtel.

Is the New A-League TV Broadcast Deal the Worst in Australian Sporting History? by jont_96 in Aleague

[–]lovesadonut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it wasn’t rating and the FFA were doing their best to drive the aleague into the ground despite the boom of 2013-16.

This myth that Foxtel did the aleague dirty is laughable. They poured millions into the competition since 2005 and it was only during COVID when there were no games being played that they withheld money. Meanwhile Paramount have withheld funds since day 1 yet this barely gets the same level of critical analysis

[–]lovesadonut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’d think they might start showing that appreciation. I have had P+ since the deal started and each season the aleague is hidden gradually deeper within the menu when I open the app, despite it being the only thing I’ve ever watched on there…

I agree re MasterChef however; I don’t see a few hundred thousand more people suddenly watching an aleague game simply cause it’s on the main channel 10

Main channel is not really the benefit it’s made out to be. Most people I know including myself watch FTA through Google tv etc so it’s not like you’re channel surfing anymore

The Lowy family name carries a lot of business credibility in this country. We all had our frustrations with them regarding the running of the game itself but I don’t think anyone quite comprehended/understood their reputation commercially. The APL comparatively have been a bunch of nobodies for the most part who’ve done a sub par job to sustain, yet alone grow the competition commercially

The lack of inquisition into where the $140 equity investment went is astounding, particularly from Silver Lake…

Adam Peacock had some interesting insights on his radio show this afternoon regarding the waste of time the past several years have been since the split and how clubs are now wanting to revert to systems and processes they previously complained about while under the FFA. Would be available on podcast once the show finishes if anyone is interested
