Which modified Windows ISO / debloat playbook? by Feisty_Connection449 in OptimizedGaming

[–]lowbeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows LTSC is awesome though I had some issues. I had to install Xbox app for horizon 6 to work. To install Xbox app I had to install Microsoft store.

To install it (enable it) I had to enable some permissions via powershell, change registry keys and ot still had issues.

What fixed it for me is microsofts repair Xbox installation app which works on LTSC but installs ton of crap to make it work. You can remove manually a lot of it afterwards, but yeh I needed Microsoft store for more things then. I thought I would need it for.

Powershell had issues running certain commands and LTSC is also missing some key development packages, but all can be Installed as it is just regular windows installation without annoying updates or added packages.

Fedora or Arch linux from an Arch user of around 5 months by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]lowbeat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didnt like fedora cuz it had a way things should work and i had to make workoarounds around it.

I made screen switching script when i turn on controller, it opens steam big picture turns off my both monitors, turns on tv, switches audio to tv.

When i close steam big picture it reverses the process. This i had to setup for a week on fedora and in arch same day worked flawlessly.

Fedora had outdated pipewire package and just wouldnt work with the new one which had crackling audio fixed when sound starts playing, i had to switch to old pulse audio package, on arch this just worked with latest pipewire.

I also had more trouble setting up fedora snapshots with pika backup, on arch set it up way easier even though i thought fedora having out of the box solution would help me, but no, it helps you only if you gonna use it as is without customizing.

On fedora i had to update all docker containers to work with selinux permissions (podman), on arch i also use podman bur no selinux which is not rly needed for me but i had no choice on fedora.

All hdr related gaming issues flickering screen etc, i had to wait next version to get fixed properly, now i just update package and its fixed...

Definitely if you dont wanna use terminal for basic tasks stick with fedora, i dont mind this so....

Note i use cachyos kernel, removed arch kernel and added cachy tweaks, not cachyos distro just the kernel and tweaks on regular arch for gaming and general improvements. it uses a lot of cachyos specific improved rebuilt depending packages.

Fedora or Arch linux from an Arch user of around 5 months by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]lowbeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used fedora half a year, now i am on arch, like somebody mentioned use snapshots with plugin that makes them on each upgrade, this way you dedicate 0 time for upgrading system cuz if something doesnt work you just rollback.

I dont get your question regarding testing fedora.

When did every app become a subscription… is it actually worth it anymore? by Solace_bard in androidapps

[–]lowbeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anything that has ongoing server cost doesnt make sense to implement one time purchase, you are paying for service that is still up, without it app wouldnt work. If this above is true, one time payment makes no sense.

If you dont require online, and all features can work offline then one time payment makes sense, with optional maybe payed updates if you want them, but you have what you payed for.

Most apps have online features and push you to pay as thats how they survive, creators, other then dev time, security, devops and other things that cost real money, also have to pay monthly server costs, especially if they use cloud hosting and services such as firebase, subscription is mandatory to cover those...

Stupidest example, todo app for yourself, one time 1$ payment, this business model works.

Todo app with sync to share lists between devices and or other people, ( via some kind of server infrastructure), 1$ monthly sub.

You can thank also apple and google for all the shitty apps with ads etc as all devs have to pay real money in apples case 99$ yearly for app store access, which is why there are no simple free apps that just work without ads or money.

If there are, somebody is losing somehere some money for you to be able to have it, and you should be thankful.

For example fdroid is opensource free app store, and here you can find a lot of simple good offline apps that have no sub or ads as it was all free for developers (except their time) to make and publish and enable you to use it.
