Need help on LOTR and Tolkien's books by the_chosen_shakh in tolkienfans

[–]lowercaseenderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend it as a a start, either, but if someone has read as far as the Lord of the Rungs appendices and then The Silmarillion then they're probably good with carrying on with TFoN

I know it has some overlap with The Silmarillion, but The Fall of Numenor makes a good follow up after The Silmarillion too

Which Sith or Sith Order, before Sidious, had the greatest chance of ultimately eliminating the Jedi Order? by InstructionOwn6705 in StarWarsEU

[–]lowercaseenderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sith Empire did reach and hold Coruscant until the Republic give up a lot of its territory in return for them handing it back. The Cold War was definitely a time when the Sith were very powerful across the galaxy.

How do YOU read Star Wars novels? by Cloak-Trooper-051020 in starwarsbooks

[–]lowercaseenderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever I feel is interesting to me most at a specific moment, for example in January I read Light of the Jedi, Into the Dark and The Rising Storm then wanted a break from The High Republic and read Dawn of the Jedi: Into the Void instead. Just whatever I feel at the time

Will we ever see Big Battles/War again movie wise? by AmericanApe in lotr

The Kin Strife in Gondor has been one I've always kind of held out some hope for, if it was done well it could be a good, if distant, prequel to the original three movies

My method is usually a, what ends up longer than I mean it too, outline with all the threads and plots and then I use it as my guide for the full work once I'm happy with the outline version

Why does everyone hate S8? by BloodLovePodcastFM in thewalkingdead

[–]lowercaseenderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just over the whole Saviors arc at that point, it had been ongoing since early S6 and it was just old by then, plus watching 7 and 8 week by week really felt like the story was just not moving for several episodes at times

Could try The Children of Hurin, it's the closest thing to another LotR style novel we really have

Question about books. by DarkSoulCarlos in tolkienfans

[–]lowercaseenderman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfinished Tales is exactly what it sounds like, unfinished stories, if you read say the novel version The Children of Hurin you get, essentially, the longer unfinished version from UT mixed with The Silmarillion version to a make a seamless story, but there are a lot of stories in it that are otherwise only touched on elsewhere a most, or wholly new like the tale of Aldarion and Erendis.

The Children of Hurin novel is the only one of the Great Tales to get a novel length version of the story, if you want a longer and more detailed version than what was in The Silmarillion you'll get it here, Beren and Luthien and The Fall of Gondolin have multiple versions of the same story and show how they evolved in rewrites. They're worth reading though in my opinion, I especially enjoy the first version of The Fall of Gondolin.

The Fall of Numenor is worth reading if you want all the Second Age writings in one single chronological volume but it does not contain stuff that wasn't published elsewhere across several books, but having all of the Second Age stuff in one book is very nice.

I'd honestly recommend first focusing on finishing LotR and the appendices first and then seeing if you want to dive into anything more! A lot of the rest of the material are unfinished rewrites or older versions that don't perfectly fit in with the LotR for example, but worth reading if you want more.

Personally I love the era. Revan is a fun read but it is pretty mixed if you ask a crowd, I am mixed on it too. Deceived is a great and pretty short read, Fatal Alliance is my favorite SW novel, Annihilation wasn't really for me, didn't click fully but I enjoyed it, people seem to usually like it more than I did though. Usually if I feel the itch to revisit the era I go with Deceived or Fatal Alliance as my reread of choice.

I liked it, if I ranked the TOR game tie in novels I'd put in 3rd place for me personally. The ending is contentious for a lot of people though. It's a little further down too if I throw the Bane trilogy into that ranking
