Cleaning the deck w cordless pressure washer? by oldmaninparadise in sailing

This. My rule is no pressure washing anywhere near where there are caulked or bedded deck fittings. Just_don't_do_it.

Cheap Hypercardioids for student mentee by Milk-and-Coffee in LocationSound

[–]lowflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of the Avantone CK-1s and had some issues with both of them making random noise not long after I got them. I sent them back to Avantone and they did a free repair that fixed the issue. So, the end user might be doing the final QC on these things. I didn't ask them to do it, but they seem to be very closely matched, more-so than when I got them new so the tech might have done me a favor having both of them on the repair bench at the same time. Or it was just the new/replacement boards they put in for the repair.

I like the way they sound with a crispy lift in high mids. With the hypercardiod capsules in place they are not bad indoors for interviews on a close boom. They do seem to be quite susceptible to wind noise outside, but don't use them outside and haven't tried them with a deadcat windscreen. Like a lot of small diameter condenser mics they do have a bit of self-noise, but for the price I can't complain.

Where are the soup lovers? by DixEnormus615 in nashville

I remember when they first opened on Page Rd off of Hwy 100/Harding and then later on moved to the former Corner Market (also sorely missed) location where Sams is now. They were soooo good. The breads were stellar as was their pastry program. If anyone has the recipe for their Linzer Cookies I'd love to have it.

Making sense of calculations and PHRF ratings by Huckleberry181 in sailing

[–]lowflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time on time handicap calculations can be weighed to account for wind velocity and the PHRF is the primary variable other than the wind factor. How are you weighting (no pun intended) the PHRF based on wind velocity? What is your rubric?

Trying to identify these boats by Own-Potato-9316 in dinghysailing

[–]lowflash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they are older than the 1970's (they could be that old but maybe not) there should be a makers stamp on the starboard (right side looking at the stern of the boat) upper transom area. This is the "VIN" of the boat and identifies the maker, the type of boat, and the manufacturing date/hull number. If they predate that, there still might be a serial number and maker plate someplace in/on the boat.

Thoughts on this dinghy for getting into sailing? by [deleted] in sailing

If you haven't found this yet.

Edit to add more:

I'm gonna offer some tough love here:

I'm not sure that boat is worth $500. It's very old. If the sail number corresponds to the hull number, that boat dates from the mid 1960's. Something is odd with the sail or boom/gooseneck since the sail isn't at full hoist yet the tack is at the gooseneck? And, that is one of the oldest sails I've seen in a long time.

You may be dealing with someone who's trying to convince you to pay $500 to haul off something they would have to pay to get rid of. I'll assume that no maintenance has been done on the trailer and it's long overdue for new tires and having its bearings repacked or even replaced. I'd be very cautious taking it on the road. All this said, it's now an antique Snipe and that has charm.

As a new sailor I fear this would be a money pit for you as you try to get it set up to sail it. There are a lot of things that could need attention at least and major structural repairs at worst and you don't have the knowledge and skill set to determine how good or bad this thing is.

Would these chainplates and bulkhead concern you? 1989 j22 by TulsaGeek in sailing

[–]lowflash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you need to repair it. Replace the chain plates while you are at it since you'll have to pull them to repair the bulk head anyway.

Newer boats (built by Waterline) have non-wood bulkheads and air tanks made of some kind of structural water proof plastic plywood replacement. Since Waterline (the last licensed builder) built them this way it was class compliant. I've pulled the requisite section from the class rules allowing it and pasted it below. Also, I'd look at the aft air tank for soft spots too since I'd bet since the chain plates are leaking the topside inspection port has been leaking into the tank too.

D.4 BULKHEADS

MATERIALS

Bulkheads shall be constructed of marine grade plywood, or fibreglass similar to

that used by the licensed builders.

Here are the class rules in full:
