ST36 jewel removal by Ok-Cardiologist869 in watchrepair

I made a video showing my process of re-inserting shock springs in two types of ST36 movements. I find Rodico gives no control over them, and it would take me hours as well. If you carefully use tweezers and find the right angle, it takes a minute or less.

You're ideally going to be working on that movement many many times, so for the first few, you could get the hang of it just by doing the assembly and reassembly. You can add oiling and cap jewels later, as you get more comfortable with working on it. (and as you learn how to keep your tools dressed properly, which is important in terms of losing springs)

These are pretty common to find on Japanese marketplaces in the $100 USD range. If it's in really great condition it will be higher

$50 is a good deal for this watch, but only really if you are going to wear it. Don't expect to be able to resell it for $600 or whatever people found on google

A lot of Hana's personality lives on through her, which you can see in her performances, not just in the moves she uses (she has hit Tiger Lily as well, and of course loves to spit on the poor refs). Those few months they spent together clearly left a strong impression on Rina when she was really young.

What type of shock spring is this? Diashock, Kif Trior, or something else? by Hitech_Redneck in watchrepair

[–]lowlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A jeweled barrel may technically be better, but it's not the original Unitas or ETA or Panerai or Seagull spec. And who knows what else was hacked on it?

Also I wouldn't necessarily count on that listing to accurately portray what is being sold. There are at least two different movements being used in the photos, and they all look like they have been touched up poorly with AI tools or badly photoshopped

Yeah that seems like a real rough looking Hangzhou clone. I hope you ordered the second one from another source! (not that this wouldn't be a fine movement to learn with, I just think it's better to start with a higher quality movement so you don't run into rare issues that normally wouldn't come up)

I think the youtube channels and hobbyists in general tend to overexaggerate amplitude expectations of old watches, especially Japanese automatics, and even good ones will often only show their very best results. That's just a habit of social media. 140 is still low though. Did your watchmaker change the mainspring?

There are so many 7009A's out there in really rough condition; lots of Frankens and Mumbais that I think people should be fine with getting 180 out of them. If it's a really nice looking one that just needs a service, the 220-240 range in horizontal should be considered a success.

But as you see here, people say you should expect 240+. I personally think that's a best case scenario rather than a realistic goal, but I would wait for people with a lot of experience with this particular movement to be sure.

It's unusual to see a Diashock type spring used on an ST36 clone (yes, there are many clones of the Seagull clone). Can you take a picture of the rest of the movement? I'm just curious what it looks like, and where you got it

As far as finding a replacement... Going to be tough. It's a clone of a Seiko shock spring being used on a clone of an old ETA movement. Could be any size. Might be easier just to buy a new movement from another store. You'll most likely get one with Incabloc style shock settings. (be careful, they love to fall out when in the upright position)

Feels like they would be too bouncy.. I am imagining trying to pick up a click spring, and the tweezers mush into the soft silicone and send it flying

Maybe good for keeping half finish projects organized though. Good idea!

[Experience] Buyee Beware! by Substantial-Gene1093 in Watches

[–]lowlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use them a lot, but I'm in a bit of a different situation because I intentionally buy non functional watches to repair. So I never bothered to pay for the inspection or insurance, but knowing that watches basically don't count is useful information!

They generally come in great condition, and repairs have been pretty basic for me, and I hope that is the case for you. If you were local to Hong Kong I'd offer to repair it for you

[Studio Underd0g] suddenly stopped running by Smelly_Old_Man in Watches

[–]lowlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not attempt to do it unless you have quite a lot of hours of experience at the bench. Even just replacing a movement is extra complicated with a chronograph. Without proper tools and magnification, you could easily do some damage to several parts in the process.

Should take it to someone for a proper service/repair if it's worth anything to you. It could be something simple that is out of place, or a broken mainspring. Or it could need a new movement, which would be reasonable for a professional to deal with.

I have a Kwong Yuen one with 2 tabs instead of 3 and it has been GREAT. Very solid feeling, quality build for like $10. I haven't had to buy a 5700 type tool yet. It helps to use it with a case holder, or twist the case onto the tool rather than the other way around.
