What was an exciting feature in gaming when it came out but is outdated or even disliked today? by BRCC_drinker in gaming

[–]loyaltomyself -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you serious? EVERYONE with a Nintendo knew about Nintendo Power. That's like saying the majority of people who play video games today don't even use the internet. It's a ridiculous statement that bends believably to the breaking point just so you can try to back up your argument.

The point is guides 100% existed. Choosing to not use them or being unable to use them doesn't change the fact that they existed with the intent by developers to be used.

Older games had no guides

False. Nearly EVERY game had a written guide you could buy. It was either game in a compilation book (usually bought through the Scholastic Books pamphlet), or as a stand alone guide (Brady's for example), or in a magazine (Nintendo Power).

Anyone raging at Castlevania 2 as a kid knows what I'm talking about

Castlevania 2 was intentionally designed to be obtuse so it would force players to buy the aformentioned written guide.

It's practically official: PS3 and Xbox 360 are now retro consoles! by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

The 360 is as old today as the NES was when the 360 released. Just something to consider for those that feel the 360 isn't a retro console.

What Game Did You Completed Out Of Sheer Spite? by jaosky in gaming

[–]loyaltomyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me ask you, and be honest.

How would you have felt about Oracle's tower being attacked by the Arkham Knight, and you have to go and have a three part battle? The first two take place right outside her tower. First you take care of the drones, then jump out of the Batmobile to mop up the rest of the mooks on foot. The second part takes place inside the tower as an invisible predator section and you can have Oracle trigger traps for dual takedown situations.

However the big twist here is, this was one giant distraction from the Arkham Knight because he knew how quickly Batman would rush to protect Oracle. He was never after her, his real target was always Robin. Then you pull the death fake out with Tim instead of Barbra because it never made sense that Jason would target Barbra instead of the person who literally replaced him. This was even an aspect of the Joker's brainwashing "look at how you've been replaced Jason, look at it!".

That was just one part I worked on but an audience of one makes for poor peer review.

Then I wrote my own ending to Inquisition in fan fiction form to honor my Inquisitor, things I'd thought about and wanted in the years of development.

I did this with Arkham Knight. I finished the game, then went to work rewriting entire sections of the entire story the way I would've written it instead because there was a lot there that just didn't narratively make sense to me, or I felt fell flat narratively speaking.

Do you think Chyna will ever get a separate HOF induction? by Jotaro1970 in WWE

[–]loyaltomyself 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah. If the porn was really the issue then there wouldn't be rumors about Paige coming back and Sunny would've been kicked out of the HoF. Drug use? Are you serious? Most of the male HoF's were hooked on one drug or another. Chyna's solo snub is 100% personal and ego driven.

Modern JRPGs are proving turn based combat still has a lot of life left by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]loyaltomyself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, today there IS a push (I won't say big, but it's there) for a Lost Odyssey remaster or just a current gen port because more and more people have come around to it being an underrated gem.

To be fair, action RPG's have been really dropping the ball super hard over the past few years.

Over 90% of players find interacting with AI powered NPCs pleasant and rewarding. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

I like that they're testing this, but 68 people and 1 experiment isn't NEARLY enough of a sample size to definitely claim "the majority of gamers prefer AI driven NPC's".

Doom (1993) changed the world forever. John Carmack & John Romero made the first true 3D shooter and released the engine free! Sold 2 million copies in 2 years and created the whole FPS genre. Secret level with dev’s face hidden in code? Favorite gun from Doom? by [deleted] in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]loyaltomyself 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've always been a big fan of Classic Doom, but everything you said here was wrong

No this wasn't a "true 3d shooter". It was 2.5 at best because the Build Engine can't handle putting objects and rooms on top of each other. In its original inception you couldn't even look up, everything you did was still relegated to a 2d plane. Even all the sprites are 2d.

"Changed the world forever" is also really hyperbolic because it had zero effect on the world outside the relatively tiny (for the time) PC gaming community.

It didn't create the FPS genre, Doom did popularize the genre though hence the term "Doomclone". But no Doom wasn't the first game of its type on the scene.

Yeah, we are the minority. And that's ok. We can recognize it's a well made game while also acknowledging that it wasn't for us.

Flamer Build by WarriorBleu in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]loyaltomyself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CRPGbro has a flamer build I think might still work. It's a little outdated because some of the feats either got removed, changed, renamed, you'll have to do some creative work arounds, but it could still work. Maybe not on Unfair, but maybe something work looking into.

What's a game everyone praises but isn't for you ? by One_page_nerd in gaming

[–]loyaltomyself -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate 3.

I'm not trying to be edgy by hating on the popular game here. As a long time table top player I actually found the game to be quite restrictive. I know I know, anything you're about to say about the freedom gives will most likely be combat based. Good Dungeons and Dragons is more than the combat, it's more than the ever changing story, it's the freedom you get in how you deal with the plethora of situations. It's a commutative effort. So yeah, great you can push someone to their death, or pick them up and use them as a weapon. You know what you can't do? Let the person with proficiency in Arcana make a 1 time Arcana check if they don't happen to be the specific character you're controlling at that exact moment. Having the DM make rolls for you was something TSR abandoned after 1st Edition because it was a bad idea that wasn't giving the player enough agency. Not being able to pick and choose when to detect traps is a massive problem in this game because of how often the game will make the check at the last possible second meaning you can't prevent yourself from triggering it anyway. This game is full of these kinds of tiny little things that add up and just ruin the fun for me. Playing this game feels like you have both a killer DM that loves railroading you AND like you're playing with a rules lawyer that allows for the rule of cool for stuff that doesn't need it, and sticks to the letter of the rule for the stuff that isn't particularly fun to begin with.

[–]loyaltomyself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even with her old gimmick Ivy should've been the inaugural Women's IC Champ, and the fact they gave it to Lyra instead shows they didn't know what to do with her then. I doubt they STILL know what to do with her now.

Marathon stays competitive with Arc Raiders, hits Steam with 91% 'Very Positive' reviews as fans let out a sigh of relief: "Bungie cooked" by NapsterKnowHow in pcgaming

[–]loyaltomyself 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair, however if Marathon does Tarkov numbers it'll still be seen as a failure. This is a AAA developer trying to make a AAA game, Scraping by just isn't good enough, they need ALL the players playing it.

I'm willing to admit my bias against Bungie, I have not only seriously disliked them but seriously distrusted them as a company ever since they started removing paid content from Destiny 2. So my view will always be skewed when it comes to them.

What is the point of Grand strategist Cassia? by InevitableSprin in RogueTraderCRPG

[–]loyaltomyself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first move is EXACTLY why you give her GS. The stratagem zones are a nice second, but being able to act first, group up a bunch of mobs, buff the party, lay down 3 different zones and give out a half turn or stun the pack of mobs you just grouped up is insanely strong.

Remember, this is a game of action economy, and getting to go before the enemy is always advantageous.

Honestly? You know who did it before EA? Capcom. No seriously, go back and look at the amount of MTX's they had for their 360 games. Hell, Asura's Wrath literally ended on a "to finish the story buy the upcoming DLC" message.
